THE AERONCA CHAMP IS A POST WORLD WAR 2 CLASSIC !!
AS RECOGNIZABLE AS THE CUB THAT WAS IT"S COMPETITION, THE 7AC CHAMP HAS A VERY NOSTALGIC PRESENCE, AND MAKES YOU THINK OF THE LATE 1940"S WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT !!
WHEN THE EXPECTED POSTWAR AIRPLANE BOOM WENT BUST, THE AERONCA COMPANY FOLDED.
CONVINCED THAT THE DESIGN WAS A GOOD ONE, OTHERS BOUGHT THE RIGHTS AND TRIED TO MAKE A GO OF PRODUCTION, WITH THE AIRCRAFT LITTLE CHANGED FROM 1947..
IN 1955, A NEW COMPANY, ** CHAMPION AIRCRAFT **, PRODUCED THE AIRPLANE IN 3 FORMS, WITH VARYING DEGREES OF IMPROVEMENTS AND UPDATES:
THE CHAMP, NOT MUCH CHANGED AGAIN, WITH A TAILWHEEL
THE CHAMP TRAVELER, A FANCIER, MORE DELUX CHAMP, BUT STILL WITH A TAILWHEEL, AND, STARTING IN 1957....
THE TRI-CHAMP TRAVELER, LIKE THIS ONE, WITH ALL OF THE UPDATES AND UPGRADES, BUT WITH A NOSEWHEEL FOR THE FIRST TIME.
THE ADDITION OF THE NOSEWHEEL MAKES THE AIRPLANE RESISTANT TO GROUNDLOOPS, WHICH BESIDES THE HORRIBLE EMBARRASSMENT, WRECKS THE AIRPLANE YOU LOVE !!
IT ALSO MAKES TAXIING MUCH SAFER, AGAIN, SPARING POSSIBLE EMBARRASSMENT AND LOSS OF THE AIRPLANE.
SINCE THE DESIGN ITSELF IS INHERENTLY NOSTALGIC, WHY NOT ADD SOME SAFETY?
ALAS, EVEN MODERNIZING THE DESIGN WITH A NOSEWHEEL DID NOT PRODUCE A BIG SALES SUCCESS, AND TOTAL PRODUCTION FOR THE TRI-CHAMP FROM 1957 TO 1962 AMOUNTED TO ONLY 472 AIRPLANES BUILT !!

THE AIRPLANE HERE, AS YOU CAN SEE, IS CUTE AS A BUTTON !!

IF YOU ARE GOING TO GO PUNCH SOME HOLES IN THE SKY ON A NICE AFTERNOON, OR SPEND ANOTHER AFTERNOON WASHING AND WAXING, WHY DO IT IN/ON A PLAIN-JANE AIRPLANE !! BE DIFFERENT, BE NOTICED, FLY A CUTE AIRPLANE !!
THIS AIRPLANE WAS RECOVERED IN STITS POLYFIBER AND PAINTED IN 1992, AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WELL TAKEN CARE OF SINCE.
INSIDE, THIS MODERNIZED AIRPLANE STILL HAS STICKS, FOR NOSTALGIA, BUT IT HAS FAR BETTER SEATS, IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND A FAR BETTER DASH LAYOUT, WITH MODERN INSTRUMENTATION THEY COULDN"T EVEN HAVE IMAGINED IN THE 1940"S !!
THE BACK SEAT IS WIDER THAN THE FRONT, SO 2 SMALLER OR 1 LARGER PASSENGERS WILL FIT COMFORTABLY !
THE GREEN PAINT IS THE PERFECT ACCENT TO THIS UNIQUE AIRPLANE, AS IT GETS YOUR ATTENTION, BUT IS PERIOD CORRECT, NOT GAUDY, AND CERTAINLY WILL NEVER BE CONFUSED WITH "CUB YELLOW" !
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS TYPE AIRPLANE AT ALL, I"M SURE YOU HAVE LOOKED THE PICTURES OVER. IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH MY LISTINGS, YOU KNOW THAT MY AIRPLANES ALMOST ALWAYS ARE DAMAGED IN SOME WAY, AND THIS ONE IS ALSO, BUT SO SLIGHTLY THAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED IT.
WHILE TAXIING, THIS AIRPLANE WAS CAUGHT BY A GUST OF WIND FROM THE REAR CORNER, AND THE TAIL WAS LIFTED UP AND TO THE RIGHT, ALLOWING THE RIGHT WINGTIP TO HIT THE GROUND (NOT THE ASPHALT, HENCE THE LACK OF SCRAPING), WHICH PUT A SMALL DENT IN THE LEADING EDGE OF THE RIGHT WING "TIP", THE AREA AT THE FAR END THAT TAPERS UP, OUTBOARD OF THE MAIN WING STRUCTURE.
THE BALANCE OF THE WING IS STRAIGHT, WHICH IS WHY IF YOU DIDNT NOTICE THE SMALL DENT OR SMALL CREASE, YOU MIGHT HAVE ASSUMED THERE WAS NO DAMAGE AT ALL.
BECAUSE THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE REST OF THE ENTIRE AIRFRAME !!!!!!
NO GEAR DAMAGE AT ALL !!
NO FUSELAGE DAMAGE AT ALL !!
NO TAILCONE OR TAIL FEATHER DAMAGE AT ALL !
NO DAMAGE TO THE LIFT STRUTS, OR THE AILERONS !
NO DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING, IT WAS NEVER TOUCHED.
THE PROPELLOR HIT THE GROUND, AND THE ENGINE WITH IT"S ACCESSORIES, THE PROP AND THE SPINNER HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED.
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE BARE FIREWALL PHOTO, THE ENGINE MOUNT IS UNDAMAGED AND INCLUDED. THERE WAS NO FIREWALL DAMAGE FROM THIS INCIDENT, BUT YOU WILL NOTE THAT THERE WAS IN THE PAST, AS THE 2 LOWER ATTACHMENT POINTS SIT ON STRAIGHTENED AND PATCHED AREAS. NO ISSUE. ALL OF THE INCLUDED LINES AND CABLES WERE UNBOLTED, NOT CUT, READY FOR YOU TO INSTALL YOUR CHOICE OF ENGINE.
C-85, C-90, 0-200 (100 H.P.), OR THE NEAT HYBRED, THE C-90 WITH THE 0-200 CRANK (C-95??)
THE WING REPAIR IS ONLY TO THE WHITE, AND IS VERY ISOLATED TO THE LEADING EDGE OF THE RIGHT TIP.

I KNOW THAT IT WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO HAVE THIS AIRPLANE READY FOR OSHKOSH THIS YEAR, BUT THERE ARE MANY MORE LOCAL FLYINS ALL SUMMER, AND YOU MIGHT MAKE SOME OF THEM, AS THIS IS AS EASY A PROJECT AS THEY COME !!
AND YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL BE THE ONLY 7FC TRI-CHAMP TRAVELER IN ATTENDANCE WHEREVER YOU GO !!
I HAVE BOUGHT OVER 5,000 AIRPLANES IN MY CAREER, HAVE BEEN AN AIRPLANE NUT SINCE KINDERGARDEN, AND HAVE BOUGHT DOZENS OF 7AC AND 7EC AIRPLANES, BUT I HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF A TR-CHAMP BEFORE I BOUGHT THIS ONE !!
THIS AIRPLANE HAS LOGBOOKS FROM 1961 BUT NOT THE FIRST FEW YEARS. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF THE TIMES.
THE 1962 ENTRY IMPLIES THAT THIS AIRPLANE HAD 1,7XX HOURS ON IT ALREADY IN THE FIRST 5 YEARS, WHICH IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE, AND SEEMS VERY IMPROBABLE. IF THAT WERE TRUE, THE AIRPLANE HAS A TOTAL OF 5,873 HOURS, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN YOUR AVERAGE CHAMP !
SINCE THIS ISNT YOUR AVERAGE CHAMP, MAYBE IT"S TRUE !!
THE LOGS ARE COMPLETE FROM 1961 ONWARD, AND THE LAST ANNUAL WAS JUST PERFORMED 3/22/2018.
