SINCE IT"S INCEPTION, THE MOONEY M20C HAS BEEN KNOWN AS A FAST, VERY EFFICIENT, CROSS-COUNTRY CAPABLE AIRPLANE.
140 KNOTS OR SO ON ABOUT 8.5 GALLONS PER HOUR.
52 GALLONS OF FUEL GIVES MORE THAN 5 HOURS OF ENDURANCE!!
NOT MANY AIRPLANES CAN BEAT THOSE SPEC"S
THE EARLY M20 SERIES WAS A LITTLE OLD FASHIONED, IN THAT THEY HAD WOOD WINGS AND A WOOD TAIL !!
AIRPLANES LIKE THIS 1965 HAD ALL METAL WINGS AND TAIL, SO THERE IS NO "ROT" ISSUES.
THE 1965 MOONEY WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE STRAIGHT SIDE WINDOWS (EARLIER AIRPLANES HAD ROUNDED SIDE WINDOWS, WHICH LOOKED A LITTLE OLD FASHIONED). THE STRAIGHT WINDOW LOOK, LIKE THIS AIRPLANE HAS, CONTINUES IN THE CURRENT PRODUCTION AIRPLANES
THIS AIRPLANE WAS USED BY A LOCAL A&P/IA AS HIS PERSONAL AIRPLANE.
HE KEPT IT UP TO AIRWORTHY STANDARDS, OF COURSE, AND WAS SLOWLY UPGRADING IT AS HE WENT ALONG.
UNFORTUNATELY, ONE DAY WHILE PARKING AT HIS HOME AIRPORT, HE TAXIED OVER A TIE DOWN CHAIN, AND HAD THE MISFORTUNE OF HAVING THE LOOSE END OF THE CHAIN HIT ONE BLADE OF THE PROP !!
I ALWAYS WORRY ABOUT THIS WHEN I AM PARKING AT A STRANGE AIRPORT, WHERE OFTEN YOU HAVE TO MANEUVER AROUND THE CHAINS AS YOU TURN TO GET INTO A SPOT. I GUESS I AM RIGHT TO WORRY.
SO THE DAMAGE IS TO THE LEADING EDGE OF 1 BLADE OF THE HARTZELL 2 BLADE PROP.
A GOUGE THAT APPEARS TO BE TOO BIG TO FILE OUT.
NO BENDING OF THE BLADE AT ALL.
NO DAMAGE TO THE OTHER BLADE.
NO VISIBLE DAMAGE OR LEAKING ON THE HUB.
THE BLADE IS NOT LOOSE IN THE HUB.
AND THAT MY FRIENDS, IS THE ONLY DAMAGE TO THIS WHOLE AIRPLANE !!
THAT"S RIGHT, NO AIRFRAME DAMAGE FROM THIS INCIDENT AT ALL !!
NOT GEARED UP, SO NO BELLY DAMAGE !!
NOT A HARD LANDING SO NO GEAR OR WING DAMAGE
NO FIREWALL DAMAGE
WE HAVE THE LOGBOOKS FOR AIRFRAME, ENGINE AND PROPELLOR, AS WELL AS THE FAA BILL OF SALE AND THE ORIGINAL FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE, SO NO PAPERWORK ISSUES.
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THE OVERALL COSMETICS OF THIS AIRPLANE ARE NOT A "10"
THE PAINT IS PRESUMED TO BE ORIGINAL (NO ONE WOULD DUPLICATE THAT 1965 MOONEY COLOR AND SCHEME, WOULD THEY?), AND IS THIN AND DRY IN SOME PLACES.
THIS AIRPLANE IS LOCATED IN DRY CENTRAL TEXAS, NEAR WHERE IT WAS BORN (MOONEY"S FACTORY IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN IN DRY, HILL COUNTRY, KERRVILLE, TEXAS)
THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS FINE, AND COMPLETE, AND THE OWNER TOLD ME THAT HE HAD BEEN OVERHAULING SOME OF THE INSTRUMENTS AS HE WENT ALONG.
HE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF UPGRADING THE RADIOS AT THE TIME HE HIT THE CHAIN, SO THE OLD RADIOS (NARCO COMM, OLD AUDIO PANEL, AND OLD NARCO NAV-COM) WERE ACTUALLY DISCONNECTED AT THE TIME, BUT HE SAYS THE KING TRANSPONDER TRAY AND ENCODER ARE STILL HOOKED UP. THE ONLY RADIOS INCLUDED IN THIS SALE ARE SHOWN.
IF YOUR PLAN IS TO REPLACE THE PROP AND FERRY THIS AIRPLANE HOME, YOU WILL NEED A HANDHELD COMM TO USE (THE COMM ANTENNA COAX IS AVAILABLE TO USE, AND AN EXTERNAL ANTENNA MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE WHEN USING A HANDHELD COMM)
THE SEATS ARE NOT RIPPED UP, BUT THEY APPEAR TO BE DIFFERENT COLORS FRONT AND BACK, OR MAYBE THE FRONTS ARE JUST MORE SUN FADED.
THERE IS SOME VERY LIGHT OLD HAIL, VISIBLE ON THE AILERONS (THE LIGHTEST SKINS)
MECHANICALLY THIS AIRPLANE IS FINE, SO IF THE COSMETICS DON"T MATTER TO YOU, REPLACE THE PROP (REALLY JUST ONE BLADE, A BLADE IS AVAILABLE USED FOR $1,250, PLUS THE OVERHAUL COST) DO WHATEVER ENGINE INSPECTION YOU THINK WOULD BE REQUIRED FOR THIS UNIQUE SITUATION, AND BUY THIS FAST, ECONOMICAL AIRPLANE FOR PEANUTS !!
