1965 PIPER CHEROKEE 160”C”, 3241 TTAF, 2197 SMOH, 534 STOH, SUPER LIGHT ISOLATED DAMAGE, EASY, CHEAP !!THE CHEROKEE LINE STARTED IN LATE 1961, WITH 1 AIRFRAME, AND 3 ENGINE CHOICES: 150 H.P., 160 H.P., AND 180 H.P.ALL THREE MODELS, CALLED BY THEIR HORSEPOWER, WERE EXACTLY THE SAME AIRFRAME, WITH THE SAME WINGS, CONTROL SURFACES, LANDING GEAR, COWLING, INTERIOR, ETC.THIS MODEL, THE 160, IS ALL BUT FORGOTTEN, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THEY MADE THIS MODEL UNTIL 1967, THE PRODUCTION NUMBERS DROPPED AFTER 1964, WHEN PIPER INTRODUCED A “LESSER” 150 H.P. ENGINED AIRPLANE AS A “TRAINER ONLY”, AND SLOTTED IT LOWER ON THE TOTEM POLE BY CALLING IT THE 140 !!(NO IT DID NOT PRODUCE 140 H.P., THIS IS ONLY A MARKETING GIMMICK !)PIPER STARTED PUSHING THE 180 AS THE FAMILY PLANE, AND 140 AS THE TRAINER, SO THE 150 AND THE 160 BECAME MORE LIKE FOOTNOTES.SO THE 160, LIKE THIS AIRPLANE, CAME OUT OF THE FACTORY AS A 4 SEAT FAMILY/CROSS-COUNTRY AIRPLANE, JUST LIKE THE OTHERWISE IDENTICAL 180 !THE 160 AND 180, HAVE A FULL SIZED BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT WITH A SEPARATE DOOR, WHICH HELPS TO MAKE THEM FAMILY AND CROSS-COUNTRY FRIENDLY.THE 140 HAS NO STORAGE SPACE IN BACK, AND NO OUTSIDE DOOR, SO YOU NEVER REALLY WANT TO PACK ANYTHING IN THAT AIRPLANE.THE 160/180 ALSO DIFFERS IN SEATING: THE 140 HAS NO BACK SEATS STANDARD, AND THE OPTIONAL FOLD-DOWN SEATS ARE LIKE BOAT SEATS. THE 160/180 HAVE A FULL WIDTH PADDED BENCH SEAT.IN 1965, THE 180C AND THIS 160C WERE IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY, EXCEPT FOR THE ENGINE SIZE !!THE “C” 160/180 BROUGHT THE 1 PIECE FIBERGLASS UPPER AND LOWER COWLINGS, WHICH WERE CONTINUED INTO THE ARCHER SERIES. A LARGER, FIBERGLASS SPINNER ALSO INCREASES SPEED SLIGHTLY, AND GIVES THE AIRPLANE MORE PRESENCE.I HAVE MADE A POINT TO DIFFERENTIATE THE 140 FROM THE 160/180, BECAUSE A VERY POPULAR MODIFICATION FOR THE 140 ADDS 10 H.P., AND MAKES A 140/160 H.P. THESE AIRPLANES ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THE FACTORY 160, BECAUSE OF THE POOR REAR SEATS AND NO BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT/BAGGAGE DOOR. DON’T BE FOOLED !!THIS 160 HAS A VERY LOW TOTAL TIME OF ONLY 3241 SNEW !!THE MOSTLY TRAINER 140’S PRETTY MUCH ALL HAVE MORE THAN THIS, SOME DOUBLE OR MORE !!THE 0-320B2C 160 H.P. ENGINE HAS 2197 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL, AND 534 SINCE TOP OVERHAUL, WITH CHROME CYLINDERS.COMPRESSIONS AT THE LAST ANNUAL WERE 79,78,78,79 OVER 80 !!!!!!!THE LAST ANNUAL WAS PERFORMED 4/11/2017 (JUST OUT OF CALENDAR ANNUAL BY A FEW WEEKS)THIS AIRPLANE DID NOT CRASH, BUT THE LANDING WAS EVENTFUL.A CROSS-WIND LIFTED THE LEFT WING, ALLOWING THE RIGHT WING TO SCRAPE ON THE RUNWAY, AND THE VERY TIPS OF THE PROP TO SCRAPE AS WELL.THE DAMAGE IS AS FOLLOWS:THE FIBERGLASS RIGHT WING IS SCRAPED AND CUT AT THE LEADING EDGE.THE OUTBOARD LEADING EDGE SKIN ON THE RIGHT WING IS SCRAPED AND HAS A CUT ON THE UNDERSIDE ABOUT 6-8” LONG. THE OUTBOARD NOSE RIB OBVIOUSLY HAS A CUT/WEAR SPOT IN IT AS WELL.AND THAT IS THE COMPLETE AND TOTAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME OF THIS AIRPLANE AS A RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT !!IT DIDN’T CRASH, IT DIDN’T EVEN LAND HARD, IT JUST LIFTED UP AND SCRAPED THE TIP !!THERE IS NO SPAR DAMAGE OR ANY OTHER SKIN DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING. NO WRINKLING ON OTHER PARTS OF THE WING.THE LEFT WING WAS 100% UNDAMAGED.ALL OF THE WING AND TAIL CONTROL SURFACES WERE NOT DAMAGED.THE FUSELAGE IS 100% UNDAMAGED.AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THIS IS A WELL CARED FOR, BUT NOT HEAVILY UPDATED AIRPLANE.THE ADLOG SYSTEM WE HAVE FOR THE ENGINE, PROP, AIRFRAME, ETC., STARTS AT 1982, AND WE DO NOT HAVE THE PREVIOUS LOGS, SO I CAN’T BE SURE THIS IS ORIGINAL PAINT AND STRIPING, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE. IF SO, THEN THIS AIRPLANE HAS NOT LIVED A HARD LIFE, AS THE PAINT IS DECENT, MAYBE EVEN GOOD. NOT A 10 MIND YOU, BUT QUITE PASSABLE. I MIGHT CONSIDER RESPAYING THE TRIM STRIPES IN A BRIGHTER, MORE MODERN COLOR, BUT IT WOULDN’T BE REQUIRED.THE LEFT FIDERGLASS WING TIP HAS A SMALL HOLE IN IT, AND THE STAB TIPS ON THE TAIL ARE SLIGHTLY CHIPPED UP, SO A LITTLE ATTENTION THERE WOULD BE WELCOME.INSIDE THE TAN CLOTH INTERIOR, VINYL SIDE PANELS AND HEADLINER ALL LOOK GOOD.THE FABRIC ON THE PILOT’S SEAT BACK RIPPED A SEAM, AND IS SAGGING DOWN. IT WASN’T OBVIOUS TO THE FORMER OWNER, AS HE FLEW IT WITH A SHEEPSKIN SEAT COVER ON HIS SEAT (NOT INCLUDED, SORRY), AND THE REST OF THE INTERIOR IS PRETTY NICE.THE GLASS IS ALSO QUITE GOOD, AS YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH FROM ONE SIDE OF THE PLANE TO THE OTHER IN THE PHOTOS, NOT LOOKING THROUGH OLD HAZY GLASS.THE DASH IS WELL LAYED OUT, AND INCLUDES A FULL COMPLEMENT OF LATE MODEL STYLE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS, VERTICAL CARD D.G., COLORED BACKROUND ATTITUDE INDICATOR, LATE STYLE ELECTRIC TURN CO-ORDINATOR, ALL WITH NICE CLEAN FACES. THE DASH ITSELF IS ALSO CLEAN .YOU WILL SEE THAT THERE ARE LIMITED AVIONICS.A MODERN 720 CHANNEL FLAT-PACK NAV-COM, A KING KT-76A TRANSPONDER WITH ENCODER, AS WELL AS AN OLD LORAN AND AN OLD MK 12 EXTRAS INCLUDE:SOFTCOM 4 PLACE INTERCOM SYSTEMWIND-UP CLOCKAS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THE LYCOMING 0-320 ENGINE, AND IN FACT THE WHOLE FIREWALL FORWARD (HOSES, BAFFLING, ETC.) LOOK VERY GOOD.ALL OF THE FLEXIBLE HOSES FORWARD OF THE FIREWALL WERE REPLACED AT THE ANNUAL IN MARCH OF 2016, (LESS THAN 50 HOURS OF FLIGHT TIME AGO) WHEN THE AIRPLANE WAS PUT BACK INTO SERVICE AFTER SITTING FOR OVER A DECADE.THAT ANNUAL INCLUDED:ALL FLEX LINES REPLACED WITH NEWMAGS REPAIRED AND UPDATEDCARB REPAIRED AND NEW 1 PIECE VENTURIALL FLUIDS FLUSHED AND REPLACEDALL FILTERS REPLACED (AIRFRAME AND ENGINE)(THIS ENGINE HAS THE OIL FILTER ADAPTER, NOT THE OLD STYLE SCREEN.)NEW VACUMN PUMP3 NEW TIRES AND TUBESNEW INTAKE GASKETSNEW SILICONE VALVE COVER GASKETSYOU CAN SEE THAT THE TOP OF THE ENGINE IS PAINTED A VERY ELECTRIC BLUE. I SUSPECT THE OWNER DID THIS, NOT THE MECHANIC, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS SHARP, I WOULD HAVE PREFERED THAT THE VALVE COVERS WERE PAINTED TO MATCH.AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE OVERALL AND CLOSE-UP PHOTOS OF THE PROPELLOR BLADES, BOTH TIPS SCRAPED THE GROUND ON THE ENDS, NOT THE FACES.BLADE TIP NUMBER 1 APPEARS THAT IT WOULD JUST REQUIRE A SIMPLE BLEND WITH THE FILE.BLADE TIP #2 HAS A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL CURLED BACK AT THE OUTBOARD TRAILING EDGE. THIS IS A VERY THIN SLIVER, AND WOULD SIMPLY SNAP OFF BY HAND, SO THIS TIP ALSO COULD BE FILED SMOOTH, BUT WITH MORE MATERIAL BEING REMOVED TO MAKE THE TIP SMOOTH.NEITHER BLADE HAS ANY BENDING TO IT, AND THEY BOTH TRACK STRAIGHT.THE ENGINE DID NOT STOP RUNNING, AND IN FACT IT TAXIED IN NORMALLY, AND DIDN’T FIND THE SCRAPE OR THE SCRAPED TIPS UNTIL AFTER THEY SHUT IT DOWN NORMALLY.WE DO NOT MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON AN AIRPLANES FERRIABILITY, BUT THE WING APPEARS TO BE EASILY PATCHABLE (WITH DUCT TAPE EVEN FOR A FERRY FLIGHT) AND THE PROP FILEABLE, AND THESE TWO REPAIRS ARE WHAT SEVERAL PILOTS AROUND THE AIRPORT ASSUMED WE WOULD DO TO FERRY THE AIRPLANE !!IN SHORT, THE DAMAGE TO THIS AIRPLANE IS EXTREMELY LIMITEDNO FIREWALL DAMAGENO NOSEGEAR (OR MAIN GEAR) DAMAGETHIS AIRPLANE WAS LAST FLOWN IN 2018 !! NOT A SITTER OR RAMP QUEEN !!SOLD WITH THE FAA BILL OF SALE !!THIS AIRPLANE IS LOCATED AT THE FLEMING-XXXX AIRPORT IN FLEMINGSBURG KY.WE WILL PAY THE STORAGE FEE FOR 30 DAYS FROM THE END OF THE AUCTION.SOLD WITH THE LOGS AS LISTED AND THE FAA BILL OF SALE.THIS IS AS SIMPLE A “PROJECT” AS YOU CAN GET !!NO HAIL, NO “CRASH” DAMAGE, JUST SIMPLE REPAIRS
