THE MOONEY M20F "EXECUTIVE IS THE FIRST MOONEY THAT ADULTS CAN SIT IN THE BACK SEAT IN !!
IT"S NOT THAT THE M20C AND M20E DON"T HAVE A BACK SEAT, BUT WHEN THE PILOT AND CO-PILOT ARE SEATED IN A COMFORTABLE POSITION, THE REAR SEAT HAS NO LEGROOM.
BY ADDING 10" TO THE SHORT MOONEY AIRFRAME IN 1967, MOONEY MADE THE CABIN MUCH MORE LIVEABLE FOR PASSENGERS FRONT AND REAR !!
THE M20F IS THE SAME EXACT AIRFRAME AND CABIN SIZE AS THE M20J "201", THE BEST ALL AROUND MOONEY EVER MADE !!
IN FACT, SPEED WIZARD ROY LOPRESTI TOOK A MOONEY M20 "F", BREATHERED ON IT WITH HIS AERODYNAMIC CLEAN-UP BREATH, AND MADE THE 201. !!
THE M20F OFFERS:

64 GALLONS OF FUEL (WHICH IS OVER 5 HOURS PLUS RESERVES)
150 KNOT PLUS CRUISE SPEEDS (178-179 MPH)
EXTRA SIDE WINDOW, SO THOSE REAR SEAT PASSENGERS YOU ARE NOW CARRYING CAN SEE OUT BETTER. THE 3RD WINDOW ENHANCES THE LONGER FUSELAGE, AND ADDS MUCH NEEDED LIGHT TO THE COCKPIT.
THE EXTRA LENGTH IN THE FUSELAGE INCREASES STABILITY AROUND THE PITCH AXIS, FOR A SMOOTHER RIDE.
THIS PARTICULAR M20F HAS BEEN UPGRADED WITH:
LONG SIDE WINDOWS, LIKE THE 201 (ELIMINATES THE CENTER BAR, GIVING A MORE FLOWING APPEARANCE AND LESS VISION INTERRUPTION)
ELECTRIC LANDING GEAR !!!
MOST EARLY M20F"S USE THE OLD JOHNSON BAR METHOD OF LEVERING THE GEAR UP BY HAND. IT IS NOT EASY, AND I THINK DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS !
ONE PIECE WINDSHIELD, NO EXTERNAL CENTER BAR
ALL OF THE GLASS ON THIS AIRPLANE LOOKS GOOD.
THE PROP WAS UPGRADED TO THE NEWEST "SCIMITAT" STYLE, WITH THE NEW STYLE, NON-AD HUB AND THE NEW STYLE POINTY SPINNER.
BUT ABOUT THAT PROP.........
AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE TO THE PROP TIPS WHEN A PIECE OF THE GEAR LINKAGE FAILED, WHICH CAUGHT THE GEAR IS A MOSTLY, BUT NOT COMPLETELY DOWN STATE.
THE PILOT KNEW HE HAD A PROBLEM (HE COULDN"T GET THE GREEN LIGHTS, SO HE LEFT THE FLAPS UP TO PROTECT THEM, BROUGHT THE ENGINE TO IDLE, AND SMOOTHLY SET THE AIRPLANE DOWN ON THE WHEELS.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE LEFT MAIN AND THE NOSE GEAR SLOWLY STARTED TO FOLD UP, WHICH CAUSED THE FOLLOWING DAMAGE :
THE LEFT WING FAR OUTBOARD SKIN IS SCRAPED AT THE BOTTOM, UNDERNEATH THE LEADING EDGE (THE TRAILING EDGE IS NOT AFFECTED)
THIS ALSO SCRAPED THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE OUTBOARD RIB (TIP RIB) ON THE LEFT SIDE, AND SCRAPED THE PITOT TUBE. AND PUSHED THE PITOT MOUNTING FLANGE UP INTO THE BOTTOM WING SKIN.
THE LEFT TIE-DOWN RING PUSHED UP INTO THE BOTTOM SKIN AS WELL, AND THE OUTBOARD AND MIDDLE FLAP HINGES ON THE WINGS HAVE SLIGHT SCRAPES (SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THEY ARE JUST SLIGHTLY SCRAPED)
THE FLAPS, WHICH WERE UP, ARE UNDAMAGED ON BOTH SIDES !!
THE AILERONS ARE ALSO UNDAMAGED ON BOTH SIDES !!
THE AIRPLANE EVENTUALLY CAME DOWN ONTO THE BELLY, LIKE IT WOULD HAVE IN A STRAIGHT GEAR UP, BUT BECAUSE THE GEAR WERE NOT FULLY RETRACTED, THE SCRAPING AND DENTING IS ONLY TO THE SCREW-ON BELLY SKINS, NOT THE STRINGERS AND FORMERS THAT HOLD THEM IN PLACE. THIS WILL MAKE THESE REPAIRS BASICALLY A BOLT-ON AFFAIR.
THE FACT THAT THIS AIRPLANE DID NOT LAND WITH THE GEAR ALREADY UP ALSO RESULTED IN NO DAMAGE TO THE SUPPORT BRACKET FOR THE GEAR MOTOR. THIS HEAVY DUTY BRACKET IS REALLY RIVITED IN, AND IS A PAIN AND EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE ON A MOONEY "GEAR-UP". THIS ONE DIDN"T GET SRAPED !!
THERE IS SOME DAMAGE TO THE SHEET METAL COVER, WHICH BOLTS ONTO THE LOWER FIREWALL IN FRONT OF THE NOSEGEAR. THIS IS PROBABLY FROM THE NOSE GEAR LINKAGE, WHICH BROKE, CAUSING THE WHOLE INCIDENT.
IN ADDITION TO THE BROKEN TUBES UP FRONT, THERE ARE 2 LONG TUBES IN THE BELLY THAT ARE BENT AS WELL.
BOTH NOSE GEAR DOORS ARE SCRAPED, AS SHOWN.
THE GEAR HAS BEEN SECURED DOWN, IT APPEARS WELL, BUT I WOULD WANT A QUALIFIED MECHANIC TO BE SURE BEFORE THIS AIRPLANE IS MOVED.
THERE ARE TWO AREAS OF DAMAGE NOT FROM THIS INCIDENT. IT SEEMS THE AIRPORT "HELPERS" WHO TRIED TO LIFT THE AIRPLANE BY THE TAIL SQUISHED THE AREA UNDERNEATH THE HORIZONTAL STAB (NOT THE TAILCONE OF THE FUSELAGE, MOONEY"S WHOLE TAIL BOLTS ON). THE SHEET METAL HERE NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED, BUT IT IS NOT STRUCTURAL.
THE OTHER DAMAGE IS TO THE LOWER COWLING ON THE FORWARD RIGHT SIDE, NEAR THE (UPDATED TO LED) LANDING LIGHT IS. THIS DENT IS FROM AN OVERZEALOUS LIFTER !
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THE ORANGE, SILVER AND WHITE PAINT IS FAIRLY FADED AND THIN, BUT THE AIRPLANE DOES NOT SHOW A CORROSION PROBLEM
INSIDE, THE BEIGE SEATS (NEWER DESIGN FOR 1967, MORE SQUARED OFF BACKS) AND TAN HEADLINER ARE FINE, AND NOT TORN UP.
THE DASH LOOKS GOOD, WITH ALL LATE STYLE GYROS.
THE RADIO PANEL UNITS AND INDICATORS ARE NOT INCLUDED. THIS ALLOWS YOU TO INSTALL WHAT YOU WANT, WHEN YOU WANT, FOR WHATEVER YOUR MISSION PROFILE REQUIRES AND YOUR BUDGET DEMANDS.
AS I SAID EARLIER, THE PROP HUB IS THE NEWEST MODEL, AND IT HAS 850 HOURS SINCE BRAND NEW, BUT BOTH TIPS ARE BENT.
THE LYCOMING IO-360 FUEL INJECTED 200 H.P. ENGINE HAS 1127 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL (2000 HOUR T.B.O.)
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, IT LOOKS FANTASTIC, AS DOES THE WHOLE ENGINE COMPARTMENT!
LAST OIL CHANGE WAS 8/2017.
THE MOONEY ENGINE IS A GOOD ONE, BUT MODERN TECHNOLOGIES CAN IMPROVE IT.
THIS AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH A POWERFLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM, WHICH IS KIND OF LIKE HIGH TECH. HEADERS FOR A CAR. THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MORE FULLY EVACUATE THE EXHAUST FROM THE CYLINDER (LITERALLY SUCKING IT OUT), WHICH ALLOWS THE INTAKE CHARGE TO BE PURER, AND THE FUEL TO BE BETTER BURNED IN THE CYLINDER.
