THE GRUMMAN AMERICAN 2 SEAT SERIES, AA-1, AA-1A AND AA-1B ARE PRODUCTION AIRPLANES, BUT NOT YOUR AVERAGE PRODUCTION AIRPLANES
IF YOU NOTICED BY LOOKING THAT THIS AIRPLANE SEEMS TO HAVE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES TO THE CURRENT CROP OF 2 SEAT SIDE BY SIDES FROM VANS AIRCRAFT, THE RV-6A, 9A OR 12, YOU WOULD BE RIGHT !
THE AA-1 AIRCRAFT WAS DESIGNED AS A HOMEBUILT, AND THEN PUT INTO VOLUME PRODUCTION AS A CERTIFIED AIRPLANE
SO THE SIZE IS LIKE AN RV, THE SLIDING CANOPY, WHICH GIVES GREAT VISIBILITY AND CAN BE LOCKED PARTIALLY OPEN FOR THAT OPEN AIR FEEL IS LIKE SOME RV"S, BUT BETTER. (SOME RV"S USE A TIP UP, AND THERE IS NO OPEN AIR FEELING AT ALL) THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT SINCE THE AA-1 SERIES IS COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED, THERE ARE STRICT QUALITY CONTROLS IN PLACE DURING ASSEMBLY, WHICH IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE RV OR ANY HOMEBUILT(THERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD BUILDERS, SOME FAIR, AND SOME VERY BAD)
STRICT PRODUCTION CONTROLS ALSO ALLOWS EASY PARTS INTERCHANGES FROM ONE AIRCRAFT TO ANOTHER, IF NESSESARY. MORE ABOUT THAT LATER.
THE ONE THING THAT IS HARDER TO DO ON A PRODUCTION AIRPLANE LIKE THIS AA-1B IS TO MAKE MAJOR CHANGES, LIKE TO UPGRADE THE HORSEPOWER.
LIKE THE VANS RV SERIES, THE AA-1B IS A SLEEK AIRPLANE, WITHOUT EXPOSED RIVITS TO SLOW IT DOWN.
IN FACT, ON THE SAME HORSEPOWER, THE AA-1 SERIES IS ABOUT 20% FASTER THAN SIMILAR 2 SEATERS FROM PIPER AND CESSNA
THE BIGGEST LIMITATION TO THE SPEED OF THE AA-1B IS THEREFORE THE FACT THAT THE ORIGINAL INSTALLED ENGINE HAS ONLY 108 H.P. !!
THIS "LOW COMPRESSION" 0-0235 WAS DESIGNED FOR THE CHEAPER 80/87 OCTANE FUEL AVAILABLE IN THE 60"S AND 70"S, BUT IT JUST DIDNT HAVE LOTS OF POWER.
SO ENTER THE ENTERPRISING MODIFIERS, WHO TOOK THIS CLEAN, UNDERPOWERED, SPORTY AIRPLANE, AND JUMPED THROUGH ALL THE PAPERWORK HOOPS, AND GOT STC APPROVAL TO MAKE THIS AIRPLANE WHAT IT COULD HAVE BEEN !!

THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE 160 H.P. CONVERSION
THE LYCOMING 0-320B2B HAS 1042 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL
SKYTEC LIGHTWEIGHT STARTER HELPS TO BALANCE OUT THE EXTRA ENGINE WEIGHT
THE AIRFRAME HAS ONLY 3,426 TT SINCE NEW
THIS AIRPLANE IS REALLY SHARP LOOKING, WITH MEDIUM BLUE OVERALL, WITH WHITE AND DARK BLUE ACCENTS, IN A PLEASING, EYE-CATCHING SCHEME
ONE OF THINGS I NOTICED IMMEDIATELY WAS THE GLASS !!
WINDSHIELDS, CANOPIES AND SIDE GLASS ARE EXPENSIVE ENOUGH THAT MOST PEOPLE LEAVE THEM IN WAY TOO LONG, AND THEY GET HAZY OR SCRATCHED.
ALL OF THE GLASS WAS REPLACED ON THIS AIRPLANE 3/2015, AND IT"S ALL THE MODERN TINTED COLOR, NOT GREEN !!
SUPER SHARP !!
AT THE SAME TIME AS THE GLASS WAS INSTALLED, THE PAINT WAS TOUCHED UP AS REQUIRED, NEW CARPET WAS INSTALLED AND THE PLASTIC INTERIOR TRIM WAS REPLACED. IT LOOKS VERY GOOD OVERALL. I DID NOTICE SOME PEELING OF THE CLEARCOAT ON THE RIGHT WING, WHICH IS EASY TO ADDRESS, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU PAINT THE REPLACEMENT LEFT WING.
THE MEDIUM BLUE SEATS ARE ALSO IN VERY GOOD SHAPE
THE AA-1B WITH 160 H.P. IS A REAL PERFORMER. TOP SPEED IS NOW 170 MPH, AND RATE OF CLIMB IS ALMOST 1,500 FEET PER MINUTE.
BUT THE LANDING SPEC"S HAVE NOT CHANGED
A SHORT FIELD IS STILL A SHORT FIELD
AND IT IS STILL BETTER TO LAND INTO THE WIND
THE AIRPORT AT THE DALTON AIRPARK, IN FLUSHING MICHIGAN HAS ONE HARD SURFACE RUNWAY, WITH A PRETTY GOOD APPROACH AT ONE END, AND SOME PRETTY HIGH TREES AT THE OTHER
THE PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE APPROACHED FROM THE GOOD SIDE, BECAUSE "I ALWAYS LAND THAT WAY", OBLIVIOUS TO THE PRETTY STIFF WIND BLOWING FROM BEHIND HIM.
HE FIGURED IT OUT, AS THE AIRPLANE SAILED OVER THE RUNWAY QUITE A WAYS BEFORE TOUCHING DOWN.
HE WAS SLOWING, BUT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE TREES AT THE END, SO HE TURNED SHARP RIGHT AT THE END, AND HIS LEFT WING GOT CAUGHT IN THE BUSHES IN FRONT OF THE TREES.
REMEMBER, ANY LANDING YOU WALK AWAY FROM UNHURT IS A GOOD LANDING, AND HE DID, SO IT WAS GOOD, BUT A REALLY GOOD LANDING IS ONE WHERE YOU GET TO FLY THE AIRPLANE HOME. AFRAID NOT !!
DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE LEFT WING, ON THE LEADING EDGE, AND THE SPINNER IS DENTED
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT"S ABOUT IT !!
THE FLAP AND AILERON ON THE LEFT WING ARE OK, AND EVEN THE TIP LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE OK
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THIS AIRPLANE HAS WHEEL PANTS AND GEAR FAIRINGS. ESPECIALLY WITH THE HIGHER HORSEPOWER, THESE ARE ESSENTIAL TO GET GOOD SPEED OUT OF THIS AIRPLANE
ALL 3 OF THE LANDING GEAR ARE GOOD, WITH NO DAMAGE, BUT THE FIBERGLASS NOSE PANT GOT INTO THE MUD OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND IS A LITTLE CRACKED UP AT THE NOSE. VERY REPAIRABLE
THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE INBOARD SECTION OF THE WING, WHICH IS ACTUALLY A CARRY-THROUGH THAT GOES ON BOTH SIDES. THE WING STRUCTURE THAT IS DAMAGED ON THIS AIRPLANE IS ACTUALLY ONLY THE OUTER PORTION OF THE WING AREA, AND IT SLIDES OVER THE CARRY-THROUGH, WHICH IS A TUBE
THE SPINNER GOT DENTED, AND PUSHED BACK AGAINST THE FIBERGLASS NOSEBOWL, AND SCRAPED IT UP A LITTLE BIT, BUT THE ENGINE MOUNT DOES NOT SEEM BENT BENT OR DAMAGED
THE FIREWALL LOOKS 100% STRAIGHT, WITH NO DENTS OR BENDING
THERE IS A SMALL PAINT FLECK MISSING ON THE RIGHT BOOTCOWL, BUT THE AREA AROUND IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE BENT
THE EXHAUST IS NOT BENT OR DAMAGED
THE PROPELLOR SHOWS NO SIGN OF BEING BENT, SCRAPED OR DAMAGED
THE ENGINE ITSELF IS NOT DAMAGED
THE ENGINE WAS OVERHAULED WITH BRAND NEW CYLINDERS, AND COMPRESSIONS AT THE LAST ANNUAL 2/2017 WERE FANTASTIC AT 76,77,75,78.
AND YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT, THIS AIRPLANE IS STILL IN CALENDAR ANNUAL !! (TILL 2/28/2108
THE ONLY OTHER DAMAGE IS TO THE PLASTIC TAIL CONE CLOSE-OUT, UNDER THE RUDDER (THE RUDDER IS FINE) THAT IS SUSPECT GOT CRACKED WHEN THE AIRPLANE
THE DASH HAS BEEN REFURBISHED AND LOOKS SHARP, AND THE INSTRUMENTS ARE ALL LATE MODEL UNITS.
THE TURN COORDINATOR IS NOT INCLUDED
THE RADIO PANEL UNITS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION, BUT THE TRAYS AND WIRING FOR A KING AUDIO PANEL, KING DIGITAL NAV-COM AND KING MODE "C" TRANSPONDER ARE INCLUDED.
