1982 MOONEY M20J “201”, 5,067 TT, 3,068 SNEW ENG, STRAIGHT AIRFRAME WITH RIGHT WING DAMAGE, CHEAP!!WHAT A GREAT PROJECT!!THE 201 IS THE BEST ALL AROUND, BALANCED SINGLE ENGINED PRODUCTION AIRPLANE AVAILABLE!!TRUE 4 PLACE, WITH ROOM FOR EVERYONES FEET AND A GENEROUS BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT.64 GALLONS OF FUEL, FOR TRUE “ACROSS THE COUNTRY” CROSS COUNTRIES.FANTASTIC AERODYNAMICS GIVE IT MORE SPEED PER HORSEPOWER THAN ANY OTHER PRODUCTION AIRPLANE!!AND THEY LOOK FANTASTIC !! SLEEK AND MAYBE EVEN SEXY!THE “201” MONIKER WAS APPLIED TO THE M20J AS A MARKITING PLOY, AS YOU CAN’T REALLY MAKE A NORMAL UNIT OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE CRUISE THAT FAST. FIGURE ON 180 MPH ON THE 1970’S AIRPLANES, BUT TWEAKS TO THE FAIRINGS AND GEAR DOORS ON SUBSEQUENT MODELS MAKE THE 1980’S UNITS LIKE THIS ONE 5-10 MPH FASTER!THIS AIRCRAFT HAS 5,067 HOURS TOTAL TIME ON THE AIRFRAMETHE ENGINE WAS REPLACED WITH A BRAND NEW ONE FROM LYCOMING 8/2000 !!THIS ENGINE IS AN A3B6, NOT THE A3B6D THAT ALL 201’S CAME WITH. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE ENGINE INSTALLED HERE IS THE NEWER MODEL, WITH 2 REAL MAGS FOR TRUE REDUNDANCY, NOT THE “D” ENGINE, WITH THE COMBINED IN ONE BODY DUAL MAG, WHICH WAS LYCOMINGS LEAST BRIGHT IDEA!IF YOU READ THE HEADLINE AND DID A DOUBLE TAKE AT THE TIME, LET ME ASSURE YOU, I READ EVERY LOG ENTRY SINCE THE INSTALLATION, AND THIS ENGINE HAS 3,068 SINCE BRAND NEW, AND HAS NEVER BEEN MAJORED.IT WENT BACK TO THE FACTORY FOR COMPLIENCE WITH THE CRANKSHAFT (BAD BATCH OF CRANKSHAFT’S ) AND THE FACTORY REPLACED THE CRANK WITH NEW, AND REDID THE BOTTOM END STUFF, BUT THAT WAS STILL 2,700 HOURS AGO!THE LOGS TELL THE STORY. EXCELLENT CARE, RELIGIOUS OIL CHANGES, AVBLEND OCCASIONALLY.THE ANNUAL SHOWS ALL COMPRESSIONS AT 74 OR ABOVE, AND NO ISSUE.ANNOTHER THING THAT MIGHT HAVE HELPED IS THE ADDITION OF THE POWERFLOW EXHAUST, WHICH ADDS 10 H.P. TO THE ENGINE OUTPUT, AND LETS THE ENGINE RUN COOLER !!IT IS PRICY, BUT ALL MOONEYS SHOULD HAVE THE POWERFLOW SYSTEM INSTALLED.WELL MAINTAINED, THE SAME MECHANIC SIGNED OF ALMOST ALL OF THE MAINTAINENCE ON THIS AIRPLANE FROM 1993 AND UP TO THE LAST ANNUAL 6/2018!!THIS AIRPLANE MADE A NORMAL LANDING, BUT A WIND GUST UPSET THE AIRPLANE A BIT, AND THE OWNER WAS UNABLE TO KEEP IT ON THE RUNWAY SURFACE.IT WENT OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, DRAGGED THE RIGHT WINGTIP IN THE DIRT, AND ENDED UP, ON IT’S GEAR, IN THE GRASS BESIDE THE RUNWAY.NONE OF THE LANDING GEAR IS DAMAGED AT ALL, THE GEAR DIDN’T COLLAPSE, AND THE AIRPLANE WAS SIMPLY TOWED BACK TO THE HANGER.DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE OUTBOARD SECTION OF THE RIGHT WING, THE RIGHT UPSWEPT WINGTIP AND THE RIGHT AILERON.THE RIGHT FLAP AND THE RIGHT GEAR DOORS (THIS HAS THE LATER 2 PIECE STYLE 2ND GEAR DOOR INSTALLED BY STC) ARE NOT DAMAGED.THE MOONEY WING HAS 3 LARGE SKINS THAT WRAP FROM THE REAR, AROUND THE LEADING EDGE AND BACK TO THE REAR AGAIN. THE HEAVY MAIN SPARS DO NOT GO PAST THE MIDDLE SKIN, SO THIS WING SHOWS NO MAIN SPAR DAMAGE!! VERY, VERY REPAIRABLE !!THE ONLY OTHER AIRFRAME DAMAGE IS TO THE TWO GEARDOORS ON THE LEFT MAIN, CRACKED AND DENTED FROM GOING THROUGH THE TALL GRASS.THE REST OF THE AIRPLANE IS UNDAMAGED!!LEFT WING, GEAR, FLAP, AILERON AND TIP ARE UNDAMAGEDNO DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, BELLY, FIREWALL, TAILCONE, COWLINGS, COWLFLAPS OR EXHAUST!(POWERFLOW REMEMBER).NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL GROUPNO DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE (DOORS FIT WELL) OR GLASSAS YOU CAN SEE, ONE PROP BLADE IS BENT BACK, WHILE THE OTHER IS STRAIGHT. THE ENGINE HAD TO BE JUST ABOUT STOPPED TO HIT ONLY ONE BLADE WHEN THE RIGHT GEAR WENT OVER THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY SURFACE, AS THE NOSEGEAR DIDN’T COLLAPSE OR MOVE BACK AT ALL.THE LONG SPINNER IS UNDAMAGEDTHERE IS NO DENYING THE PROP STRUCK, BUT THE CRANK SHOULD BE FINE, AND THAT’S REALLY ALL YOU CARE ABOUT, CONSIDERING THAT YOU WILL NEED TO OVERHAUL THIS ENGINE BASED ON IT"S ALREADY PASSED TBO.INSIDE, SOME OF THE PLASTICS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, SO THEY ARE ALL PRETTY GOOD NOW, AND THE SEATS ARE VERY NICE, BLUE/GREY VINYL WITH SOFT CLOTH INSERTS.NOTICE TOO THAT THE REAR SEATS ARE THE DESIREABLE BUCKET TYPE.EARLIER 201’S HAD A SIMPLE BENCH REAR SEAT. THESE BUCKETS ARE MORE COMFORTABLE AND THEY ARE MADE TO BE EASILY INDIVIDUALLY REMOVEABLE AND EASY TO FOLD DOWN TO MAKE A HUGE, LONG CARGO COMPARTMENT WHEN YOU WANT IT!!ONLY LATER 201’S HAVE THESE GOOD SEATS!THIS AIRPLANE WAS EQUIPPED WITH MOSTLY ORIGINAL KING DIGITAL EQUIPMENT, BUT AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THE PANEL UNITS AND WIRING WERE REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED.THERE WAS A MIS-COMMUNICATION, WHEN THE OWNER WAS ASKED TO REMOVE THE RADIOS FOR SAFE-KEEPING, AND INSTEAD THE TRAYS WERE REMOVED AS WELL!THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE KING HSI SYSTEM AND KING FLIGHT DIRECTOR WERE NOT REMOVED OR CUT, AND THEY ARE INCLUDED.THE EVEN BETTER NEWS IS THAT THIS AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE DESIREABLE KFC 150 AUTOPILOT SYSTEM, WHICH PROVIDES ROLL AND ALTITUDE HOLD, RADIO AND GLIDESLOPE COUPLING AND MANUAL AND ELECTRIC TRIM. I HAVE THIS SAME SYSTEM IN MY MOONEY, AND IT IS FANTASTIC!!AND THE LOGBOOKS SHOW THAT THE OWNER SPENT MONEY TO KEEP THE SYSTEM WORKING PERFECTLY!THE PANEL UNIT WAS REMOVED, EVEN THOUGH ALL OTHER PARTS OF THE SYSTEM ARE STILL INSTALLED, BUT WE GOT IT BACK, AND IT IS INCLUDED WITH THIS AIRPLANE !!IN ADDITION TO THE HSI SYSTEM AND FLIGHT DIRECTOR, YOU CAN SEE THAT ALL OF THE FLIGHT AND ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION IS STILL INSTALLED AND INCLUDED, DOWN TO THE DIGITAL TACH AND SHADIN FUEL FLOW.
