This is a true once in a lifetime chance to buy one of the most fun planes in the world. The original Grumman AA1 Yankee had an airfoil that is often referred to as the "fast wing". The Yankee was later modified to the AA1A, then AA1B to include a significantly modified airfoil that slowed the plane down about 10 knots but made it a more docile trainer. These planes are often referred to as the "Poor man"s Fighter Plane" as they are incredibly nimble and docile and allow the plane to be flown with the canopy open on nice days. It is impossible to fly a Yankee without a smile from ear to ear.
This plane has super low hours on the airframe but engine has already been rebuilt and has only 220 hours on it and very few hours on a new prop with increased pitch to handle the increased horsepower. You can easily fly on just 6 gallons an hour, slide the canopy back in flight and can even run non-ethanol auto fuel with the purchase of an STC to further extend your flying budget. Think about it this way: $1.75/gallon and only 5-6 gallons per hour means you can fly for less than $10/hour, making this one of the cheapest planes to operate while having a ton of fun at the same time. Annual is current and good through June 2015 so you can start flying this plane immediately without any worries. All logbooks are included since new and I can"t find any history of damage.
Airframe: The airframe has only 1322 hours since new - yes really, that"s it. While it has not flown a lot in it"s lifetime, it has flown pretty regularly over the last several years until the previous owner"s death so it"s not been sitting collecting dust. The paint and interior are original and show their age but after this many years, you"d expect that. There are a few battle scars and hangar rash on the plane but no corrosion issues to worry about. A complete Air Tex interior would make this plane look amazing and you can have it painted in your choice of colors at a later date. The windscreen and canopy are in very good condition with no cracks and the side windows are in good condition. The wheelpants are a rare find on a Yankee. Tires are in good condition as are brakes. Fuel tanks are 12 gallons per side, 11 of which is useable. But, 22 gallons of fuel at such a low burn rate will cover a lot of ground.
Engine: The Lycoming O-235 engine has only 220.3 hours since major overhaul and has been upgraded to the 115hp model which can run 2800rpm continuously. This engine carries a 2400 hour recommended Time Before Overhaul which means most people can fly this plane for the rest of their lives without ever overhauling it! The prop was also changed out for one with more pitch to handle the added horsepower and looks brand new. A new carburetor was installed in July and left magneto was just overhauled last week. A spin on oil filter has been added to make maintenance far easier and extend the life of your engine.
Avionics: You will have a hard time finding another plane in this price range that already has an IFR avionics package installed. It has dual DIGITAL radios to include a King KY97A flip/flop com radio for #1, a King KX125 flip/flop nav/com radio with built in CDI ran through a glideslope indicator, a King KT76 mode C transponder and King KMA24 audio panel. The hole in the panel was where a KLN90 GPS and indicator were installed. The wiring and trays are still there so all you have to do is slide a replacement in.
Interior: Seats and carpet are original and show their age. They"re still functional and if you like, the direct replacement interiors from Air Tex can always be installed. Their interiors are amazing and truly snap right in with minimal labor. Flaps are electric and the fuel selector and gauges in these models virtually eliminate guesswork. A sunshade is installed to provide shade in the cockpit on sunny days.
This is a once in a lifetime find for a new pilot or a seasoned pilot who wants to continue flying on a budget. The dual yoke and dual toe brakes make it a great trainer or allow your passenger to fly a little for fun. I"ve owned and flown a ton of Yankees over the years. It"s not uncommon to have fuel burn of a frugal 4-4.5 gallons per hour in cruise but 5-6 gallons per hour is incredibly easy to obtain. You can fly with the canopy open on hot days as well. With a super low time engine, a very nice digital IFR avionics package and one of the most desireable models that Grumman ever built, this is truly a plane that you can fly for as long as you want and get your money back. A Cessna 150 or 152 can"t perform anywhere near what this one will. AND....the 150 has an 1800 hour engine TBO. You"ll have a hard time finding anything with an IFR package in this price range.
Plane is located at KLXT in Lee"s Summit, MO. If you fly into Kansas City to pick the plane up, I can have someone pick you up and take you to the plane. I also have several pilots who can deliver the plane to you - probably for less money than you could go get it. They charge $250/day plus expenses (fuel, oil, hotel,....) and a return plane ticket home. In many cases, there is no need for a hotel as they can get there and back in one day.
