Piper 1963 1963 PIPER CHEROKEE 160, 2,625 TTAF, COMPLETE AIRFRAME WITH NO ACCIDENT DAMAGE, CHEAP!!.

Item specifics
Make: Piper Model Year: 1963
1963 PIPER CHEROKEE 160, 2,625 TTAF, COMPLETE AIRFRAME WITH NO ACCIDENT DAMAGE, CHEAP!! THE PIPER CHEROKEE HAS BEEN PRODUCED WITH MANY ENGINE, PROP AND WING CONFIGURATIONS, AND EVEN 2 SHORT AND 1 LONGER FUSELAGE, SO IT TAKES QUITE AN AFFECTIONADO TO KNOW ALL THE VARIATIONS. THE AIRPLANE FOR SALE HERE IS A 160. THAT DESIGNATION, AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, WAS TO DENOTE THE HORSEPOWER, WHICH WAS 160 H.P. FROM A LYCOMING 0-320. THE FIRST CHEROKEES BUILT WERE THE 150 AND 160 MODELS, IDENTICAL IN EVERY RESPECT EXCEPT THE HORSEPOWER COMING FROM THE LYCOMING 0-320 ENGINE INSTALLED. THE 150 WAS INTENDED AS A TRAINING AIRCRAFT WHILE THE 160 WAS MORE INTENDED AS A TOURING AIRCRAFT, DIRECT COMPETITORS TO CESSNA’S 172 (145 H.P.) AND 175 (165 H.P.) AS TOURING AIRPLANES, THEY WERE FOUR SEAT AIRPLANES (FULL BENCH SEAT IN THE REAR), WITH AN OUTSIDE DOOR FOR THE FULL SIZED BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT! IF THIS SEEMS MORE LIKE THE CHEROKEE 180 THAT YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH, YOU WOULD BE CORRECT! THE 180, WHICH CAME OUT A YEAR LATER THAN THE 150/160, USES THE SAME FUSELAGE AS THE 150 AND 160! I OFTEN HAVE PEOPLE CONFUSE THE 140 AS HAVING A 140 H.P. ENGINE, BUT IT DOESN’T. IT HAS THE SAME O-320, 150 H.P. AS THE CHEROKEE 150, BUT MANY, MANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE FUSELAGE TO MAKE IT A CHEAPER AIRPLANE, HENCE THE NUMBER IS LOWER THAN THE MORE OPTIONED CHEROKEE 150. THE 140 CAME WITH NO REAR SEAT, (LITTLE JUMPSEATS WERE OPTIONAL) NO BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT ON THE 140 NO BAGGAGE DOOR ON THE 140 EVEN THE ENGINE GUAGE PACKAGE WAS CHEAPER AND LESS INFORMATIVE ON THE 140! SO IT WOULD BE BEST TO THINK OF THE 160, LIKE THIS ONE, AS A 180, BUT WITH AN ENGINE THAT WEIGHS A LITTLE LESS, DRINKS LESS FUEL PER HOUR, AND HAS 20 LESS HORSEPOWER. THE GROSS WEIGHT ON THE 160 IS 2,200 LBS, WITH A FACTORY WEIGHT OF 1,200 LBS AND A NORMALLY EQUIPPED WEIGHT OF 1,300 LBS, (1284 ON THIS AIRPLANE) SO A NORMAL USEFUL LOAD OF APPROX 900 LBS (916 ON THIS PARTICULAR AIRPLANE). WITH 5 HOURS FUEL ON BOARD, THE 160 WILL HOLD 600 LBS IN THE CABIN, SO NOT 4 FULL SIZED PEOPLE, BUT 3 IS FINE, OR 2 ADULTS AND 2 KIDS, AND SOME LUGGAGE. A FULL LOAD OF PEOPLE STILL ALLOWS FOR 34 GALLONS OF FUEL, (TO THE FACTORY "TAB" PLACED INSIDE THE TANK FILLER NECK) OR OVER 3 HOURS PLUS RESERVES. IF I SOUND FAMILIAR WITH THE 160, I AM, AS I SOLOED IN A CHEROKEE 160 ON MY 16TH BIRTHDAY, SO I ALWAYS REMEMBER IT AS THE AIRPLANE THAT ALLOWED ME TO “SLIP THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH”. THIS AIRPLANE HAS HAD A RECENT PAINT JOB AND A RECENT INTERIOR, AND LOOKS VERY GOOD INSIDE AND OUT! THE AIRCRAFT WAS STRIPPED AND REPAINTED 2/16/2018. ALLOVER WHITE WITH BLUE N NUMBERS, NO STRIPING. (THE WHITE PAINT IS IN GREAT SHAPE. A LITTLE COLOR ACCENT STRIPING WOULD REALLY DRESS IT UP)! THE INTERIOR WAS REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME, IN BLUE VINYL, WITH APPROVED MATERIALS. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS, THE AIRPLANE WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT, OR EVEN AN INCIDENT! TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHY THIS NON-ACCIDENT AIRPLANE IS BEING SOLD, PLEASE ALLOW ME TO SHARE A LITTLE HISTORY FROM THE LOGBOOKS. THIS AIRPLANE CHANGED HANDS IN AUGUST/2020, AND AS PART OF THE PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION, THE STABILATOR WAS REPLACED WITH A GOOD USED UNIT AND THE WING BOLT HOLES WERE INSPECTED BY EDDY-CURRENT NDT, IN ANTICIPATION OF THE UPCOMING PIPER A.D. (TO ELIMINATE “GOTCHAS”). THE AIRPLANE WAS BROUGHT TO MASSACHUSETTS AND HAD A COUPLE OF SMALL ITEMS ADDRESSED IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2020. THE OWNER BROUGHT THE AIRPLANE TO HIS SHOP FOR A STANDARD ANNUAL IN JANUARY OF 2021 AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS MECHANIC HAD BEEN VERY DEEP INTO IT. HE DIDN’T LIKE WHAT HE FOUND! THERE IS CORROSION AROUND THE BAGGAGE DOOR OPENING THAT IS SEVERE ENOUGH THAT MATERIAL IS MISSING FROM A REINFORCING RIB THERE. HE ALSO CONSIDERED THE CORROSION IN THE VERTICAL FIN EXCESSIVE. THERE IS SIMILAR, BUT PROBABLY LESS SEVERE OR SUSPECT SURFACE CORROSION IN THE TOP OF THE TAILCONE WHERE THE VERTICAL FIN SITS. THIS MECHANIC REFUSED TO ANNUAL THE AIRPLANE AND SUGGESTED THAT HE DIDN"T WANT TO GET INVOLVED. IN LOOKING AT THE LOGBOOKS (WE HAVE THE COMPLETE AIRFRAME LOGS SINCE NEW), I FIND THE FOLLOWING: BOTH WINGS WERE REPLACED IN 1994 (NO REASON GIVEN, BUT POSSIBLY CORROSION ISSUES WITH THE ORIGINAL WINGS)? THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE REPLACEMENT WINGS LOOK GOOD CURRENTLY AND ARE NOT IN QUESTION HERE! THE AIRCRAFT WAS FLOWN AND WELL MAINTAINED IN WESTHAMPTON N.Y. FOR THE PERIOD 2001 TO 2007, WHEN THOSE ENTRIES END. THE NEXT ENTRY IS A FERRY PERMIT IN 2017 WHERE THE AIRCRAFT WAS BROUGHT TO FLORIDA, WHERE IT WAS ANNUALLED IN JULY 2017, THEN PAINTED IN FEBRUARY 2018, THEN ANNUALLED AGAIN SEPTEMBER 2018. A PREBUY WAS DONE BY A DIFFERENT MECHANIC THAN THE ONE WHO DID THE ANNUALS IN FLORIDA AND THEN THE AIRPLANE MOVED TO TENNESSEE, WHERE THERE ARE SEVERAL MAINTENANCE ENTRIES AND THE VERY COMPLETE LAST ANNUAL INSPECTION 12/20/2019 BY A BIG TENNESSE SHOP. SO DID ALL OF THESE A&P’S AND IA’S MISS THE CORROSION? OR DID THEY SEE IT BUT WERE UNCONCERNED? THE HORIZONTAL WAS REPLACED AS A RESULT OF THE 2020 PRE-BUY, BUT NO REASON WAS GIVEN FOR THE REPLACEMENT. THE CURRENTLY INSTALLED STABILATOR HAS NO CORROSION ISSUES. SO THE AIRPLANE WILL NEED SOME REPAIRS OR PARTS REPLACED, AND AN HONEST, REASONABLE ASSESSMENT GIVEN TO WHAT CORROSION THAT REMAINS IS ACCEPTABLE (OF COURSE ALL AIRPLANES FROM THIS VINTAGE HAVE SOME CORROSION, WHICH IS PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE AND DOES NOT AFFECT IT’S AIRWORTHINESS). IT WOULD APPEAR THAT SEVERAL SHOPS CONSIDERED THE CORROSION THEY FOUND TO BE ACCEPTABLE AND NOT AN AIRWORTHINESS ISSUE, WHILE THE AST MECHANIC DID NOT AGREE. I HAVE INCLUDED PICTURES OF THE UPPER BAGGAGE DOOR FRAME, WHERE THE REINFORCING RIB HAS MATERIAL MISSING. ALSO INCLUDED IS A PHOTO OF THE RIGHT AILERON SKIN, WHERE THE EDGE OF THE SKIN IS ERODED. THE VERTICAL FIN DOES NOT LOOK HORRIBLE TO ME, BUT SINCE IT WAS ON THE LAST MECHANICS LIST, I AM HAPPY TO INCLUDE A GOOD USED VERTICAL FROM OUR STOCK, AT NO CHARGE, ALONG WITH THIS AIRFRAME. WE ARE ALSO HAPPY TO INCLUDE A USED REPLACEMENT FOR THE BAGGAGE DOOR REINFORCEMENT THAT SHOWS EROSION. THE RUDDER DOES NOT SHOW ANY CORROSION ISSUES AND THE OTHER AILERON AND FLAP ARE NOT ERODED. THE LANDING GEAR ALL SHOWS WELL AND NO REPORTS OF LANDING GEAR ISSUES ARE IN THE LOGBOOKS. THE ENGINE MOUNT WAS REPAIRED DUE TO A CRACK 2 YEARS AGO AND STILL LOOKS NEW, NO ISSUES. YOU WILL NOTE THAT WE ARE SELLING THE AIRFRAME ONLY, NOT THE ENGINE. AS A RESULT OF THE CORROSION DIAGNOSIS, THE ENGINE AND PROP WERE REMOVED FOR A HOMEBUILT INSTALLATION, SO NOTHING FORWARD OF THE MOUNT IS INCLUDED EXCEPT THE CARB AIR BOX. ALL FIREWALL MOUNTED ITEMS ARE INCLUDED AND THE ENGINE CONTROL CABLES AND ELECTRICAL WIRES WERE PROPERLY REMOVED, NOT CUT! THE UPPER AND LOWER COWLINGS ARE UNDAMAGED AND INCLUDED, AS SHOWN! THE DASH IS COMPLETE WITH ALL FLIGHT AND ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION, SWITCHGEAR AND CIRCUIT PROTECTION. THE RADIO TRAYS FOR LEGACY KING EQUIPMENT, (DUAL KX-170B’S, KMA 20 AUDIO, KR-86 ADF) PLUS THE TRAY FOR THE UPDATED GARMIN TRANSPONDER ARE STILL INSTALLED AND FULLY WIRED, (PANEL UNITS NOT INCLUDED HERE) SO YOU COULD GO BACK WITH THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT (READILY AVAILABLE) OR UPGRADE SOME OR ALL TO MORE MODERN EQUIPMENT, WITHOUT PAYING FOR ANYTHING YOU DON’T WANT! AN N.A.T. 4 PLACE INTERCOM SYSTEM IS STILL INSTALLED AND INCLUDED AS WELL. THIS AIRPLANE IS BEING SOLD WITH THE LOGBOOKS SINCE DAY 1 (8/22/1962) THROUGH THE LAST ENTRY 10/2020. ALSO INCLUDED ARE AD COMPLIENCE SHEETS, WEIGHT AND BALANCE, RECEIPTS, AIRPLANE FLIGHT MANUAL, ETC. AND THE FAA BILL OF SALE AND THE FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE! THERE IS NO ENTRY IN THE LOGBOOKS BY THE DISAPPROVING MECHANIC, SO THERE ARE NO “BLACK MARKS” ON THIS AIRCRAFT, IT’S PAPERWORK OR IT’S REGISTRATION. AS IS THE REGULAR CASE, THE PERSON WHO INSPECTS THE AIRPLANE AFTER REQUIRED REPAIRS AND ANNUAL IS THE FINAL AUTHORITY AS TO CONDITION AND AIRWORTHINESS. LOCATED IN A STORAGE LOCKER IN ABERDEEN, MARYLAND, JUST N.E. OF BALTIMORE. WE WILL PAY THE LOCKER FEE FOR 30 DAYS FROM THE END OF THE AUCTION TO ALLOW YOU TIME TO GET IT PICKED UP. ALREADY DISASSEMBLED FOR EASY TRANSPORTATION. THIS AIRCRAFT REQUIRES AN ENGINE, AND THE ENGINE REMOVED WAS A 160 H.P. 0-320, DYNAFOCAL MOUNT. SO THIS IS THE FIRST THING THAT WOULD COME TO MIND WHEN THINKING ABOUT A REPLACEMENT. BUT REMEMBER HOW THE 160 IS THE EXACT! SAME AIRFRAME AS THE 180? IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT THE ENGINE MOUNT IS ALSO THE SAME, AND THAT A 180 WILL FIT ON THE FRONT WITHOUT MODIFICATION. SO INSTALL YOUR CHOICE OF ENGINES, DO A GOOD INSPECTION AND REPLACE THE REQUIRED CORRODED SHEET METAL AND ENJOY YOUR UPDATED CHEROKEE, WITH A MUCH SMALLER INVESTMENT THAN YOU WOULD NEED TO BUY IT OUTRIGHT! GOOD BIDDING!
WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT DOES NOT OBTAIN REPAIR ESTIMATES, AS WE DO NOT REPAIR ANY OF OUR AIRPLANES. WE ONLY FACILITATE THE SALE OF REBUILDABLE AIRCRAFT TO THOSE DESIRING TO SAVE MONEY OR HAVE MORE AIRPLANE THAN OTHERWISE POSSIBLE FOR THE MONEY.
REPAIR OF ANY AIRCRAFT WILL DEPEND ON MANY FACTORS, SUCH AS AVAILABILITY OF USED PARTS, LABOR RATE OF THE REPAIR FACILITY, FAMILIARITY WITH THE AIRCRAFT, ETC. AND WE WOULD NEVER PRESUME TO ESTIMATE THIS NUMBER FOR A BUYER. BEWARE OF THOSE WHO OBVIOUSLY GIVE UNREALISTICALLY LOW "ESTIMATES" FOR THE REPAIR OF THE DAMAGED AIRCRAFT THEY SELL.
THIS ITEM IS BEING SOLD WITH A LOW RESERVE, THEREFORE WE FULLY EXPECT THIS LISTING WILL SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER AT THE CLOSE OF THIS AUCTION, SO BID EARLY AND BID HIGH. THERE WILL BE NO CHANCE TO BUY THIS ITEM LATER!!
AS WE SET OUR BUY-IT-NOW SO LOW, MANY OF OUR AIRPLANES SELL BY THIS METHOD BEFORE THE END OF THE AUCTION. DONT WAIT TOO LONG HOPING TO SNIPE IT AT THE END, AND BE DISAPPOINTED !
