THE M20C IS MOONEY’S HIGHEST VOLUME MODEL, AND THE AIRPLANE THAT BASICALLY PUT MOONEY ON THE MAP!
WITH IT’S AERODYNAMIC EFFICIENCIES, THE M20C GOES FASTER WITH IT’S 180 H.P. LYCOMING THAN PIPER, CESSNA AND BEECHCRAFT DO WITH THEIR 200 H.P. MODELS!
BUT ALL M20C’S ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL!
THE FIRST “C” HAD A GOOFY ROUNDED SIDE WINDOW THAT SHORTENED THE AIRPLANE VISUALLY.
EVEN AFTER THE WINDOWS WERE FIXED, THE COWLING WAS A NIGHTMARE OF 100 SCREWS AND MULTIPLE SMALL PANELS TO REMOVE AND REPLACE FOR ENGINE INSPECTION ( SO PEOPLE DIDN’T DO IT, WHICH CAN CREATE SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH BIRDS MAKING NESTS, LEADING TO ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRES.)
EVEN ONCE THEY REPLACED ALL THOSE PANELS AND INSTALLED A PROPER 1 PIECE UPPER COWL, WITH A HANDFUL OF DZUS FASTENERS HOLDING THINGS ON, YOU STILL HAD THE ARCHAIC MANUAL GEAR SYSTEM, WITH A HANDLE BETWEEN THE SEATS TO YANK AND PUSH AT THE RIGHT EXACT MOMENT, CLOSE TO THE GROUND AND AT MINIMUM SPEED, JUST WHEN YOU SHOULD BE CONCENTRATING ON FLYING, NOT DOING MANUAL LABOR.
AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, ALL MOONEYS BEFORE 1969 HAD HYDRAULIC FLAPS YOU PUMPED DOWN BY HAND!
IF I SOUND LIKE I DISLIKE MOONEYS, I’M SORRY. I ACTUALLY FLY A MOONEY PERSONALLY BY CHOICE, BUT NOT A GOOFY WINDOW, POOR DASH LAYOUT, MANUAL GEAR AND PUMP DOWN FLAPS MODEL WITH 100 SCREWS IN THE COWLING.
MY MOONEY, LIKE THIS 1970 “C” MODEL, HAS A PROPER 1 PIECE TOP COWLING WITH DZUS FASTENERS, ELECTRIC FLAPS AND LANDING GEAR, REASONABLE DASH LAYOUT AND SQUARED OFF SIDE WINDOWS FOR A SLEEK PROFILE.
COMBINE THOSE MODERN FEATURES WITH THE SAME BULLIT-PROOF 180 H.P. LYCOMINGS AS THOSE OLDER, LESSER “C” MODELS, AND YOU HAVE A DESIRABLE AIRPLANE!
THIS 1970 MODEL HAS A VERY REASONABLE 4,407 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW ON THE AIRFRAME.
THE LYCOMING 0-360 180 H.P. HAS A VERY LOW 240 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL (WITH A 2,000 HOUR RECOMMENDED TIME BETWEEN OVERHAULS, MOST OWNERS WILL NEVER NEED ANOTHER OVERHAUL IN THEIR LIFETIME!!
UNFORTUNATELY, IF YOU HAVE LOOKED AT THE INCLUDED PHOTOS, YOU WILL SEE THAT THIS AIRPLANE HAS AN ISSUE.
ONE OF THE TRAITS THAT ALL MOONEYS SHARE IS A TENDENCY TO BOUNCE IF LANDED TOO FAST. AN EXPERIENCED PILOT AVOIDS THIS SITUATION IF POSSIBLE, BUT RECOGNIZES IT IF IT DOES HAPPEN AND DOES THE COUNTER-INTUITIVE THING AND ADDS A LITTLE BURST OF POWER! NOT THAT YOU WANT TO GO FASTER, OF COURSE, BUT YOU WANT TO KEEP THE NOSE UP, SO THAT AT LEAST YOU ARE TOUCHING ON ALL 3 WHEELS, NOT JUST THE NOSEWHEEL.
IF THE NOSE HITS FIRST, THE VERY LOW GROUND CLEARANCE OF THE PROP CAN ALLOW THE PROP TIPS TO TOUCH THE RUNWAY. IF THE PILOT IS LUCKY, THE BOUNCES WON’T DO ANY DAMAGE (THE MOONEY IS BUILT VERY SOLIDLY), THE GEAR WON’T BE DAMAGED, THE BOUNCES GET SMALLER AND LOWER AS THE SPEED GOES AWAY, THE ENGINE KEEPS RIGHT ON RUNNING AND THE AIRPLANE ROLLS OUT SAFE AND SOUND, BACK TO IT’S PARKING SPOT. ONLY THEN DOES THE PILOT REALIZE THE FIRST BOUNCE WITH THE NOSE LOW HAS DONE SOME PROP DAMAGE!
SUCH IS THE CASE WITH THIS 1970 M20C!
NOTICE THAT THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE NOSEGEAR, EXHAUST PIPE OR NOSEGEAR DOORS!
THIS AIRPLANE DIDN’T DAMAGE ANY OF THAT!!
NOT A GEAR UP OR BELLY LANDING, SO THERE IS NONE OF THE SCRAPING AND TEARING OF THE BELLY THAT USUALLY ACCOMPANIES THOSE "LANDINGS"!
IN FACT I CANNOT FIND ANY DAMAGE TO SPEAK ABOUT AT ALL ON THIS ENTIRE AIRCRAFT, EXCEPT A SMALL DING AND FOLD ON THE FRONT LOWER EDGE OF THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR DOOR!
UNRELATED, THERE A SMALL DENT (HANGER RASH) ON THE RIGHT SIDE TAILCONE LOWER (TAP IT OUT IF YOU WISH, OR LEAVE IT, IT’S MINOR).
THAT’S EVERYTHING I SAW IN MY PERSONAL INSPECTION THIS WEEK!
NO WING DAMAGE, NO CONTROL SURFACE DAMAGE, NO OTHER FUSELAGE DAMAGE AND NO GEAR ISSUES!
IF YOU GET THE ANGLE JUST RIGHT, YOU COULD SEE A LITTLE VERY LIGHT, VERY SCATTERED HAIL, BUT NO ONE WILL NOTICE IT (NOT EVEN YOU) UNLESS YOU SHOW THEM EXACTLY WHERE, AND IT DOES NOT AFFECT THE AIRPLANE STRUCTURALLY, COSMETICALLY OR AERODYNAMICLY.
SO THE HARTZELL 2 BLADE PROP IS BENT ON BOTH TIPS AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OR 2 BLADES, OR REPLACEMENT OF THE WHOLE PROP, AND THERE ARE SEVERAL CHOICES FOR THIS AIRPLANE, SUCH AS HARTZELL 2 BLADES LIKE THE ORIGINAL, THE NEW SCIMITAR BLADE HARTZELL 2 BLADE, AND 3 BLADES FROM EITHER HARTZELL OR MCCAULEY.
AS MOST PEOPLE ARE AWARE, AN INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE IS REQUIRED AFTER THE PROP TIPS (OR EVEN 1 TIP) HITS MORE THAN AIR!
THE EXTENT OF THE INSPECTION WILL BE THE IMPORTANT THING FOR YOU TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR MECHANIC OR THE PERSON WHO WILL SIGN OFF THE INSPECTION, BUT THERE IS ONE VERY EVIDENT TRUTH: THIS ENGINE, WITH ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 11% OF IT’S RECOMMENDED LIFE USED UP, DOES NOT REQUIRE A MAJOR OVERHAUL!!
DON’T LET A SHOP SUGGEST TO YOU THAT IT DOES, BECAUSE THE COST OF AN OVERHAUL IS DOUBLE OR EVEN TRIPLE THAT OF AN OVERHAUL, AND WILL NOT CHANGE YOUR OPERATING RELIABILITY NOR LONGEVITY BY MORE THAN A SMALL FRACTION!!
THE MAJOR OVERHAUL WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN 2003, AND 4 BRAND NEW TITAN NITRIDE COATED CYLINDERS WERE INSTALLED THEN!
I HAVEN’T TALKED ABOUT COSMETICS YET, BUT I SHOULD, BECAUSE THE AIRPLANE IS STRAIGHTER AND BETTER LOOKING THAN THE RATHER UNFORTUNATE PARKING SPOT IT IS IN WOULD TEND TO SUGGEST!
THE LAST FLIGHT ON THIS AIRPLANE WAS 01/28/2021 AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS FIRST TIED DOWN ON THE HARD SURFACE RAMP, BUT WHEN IT BECAME APPARENT THAT IT WASN’T GOING TO FLY AWAY RIGHT AWAY, THEY MOVED IT A BIT FARTHER OUT AND TIED IT DOWN (SECURELY) IN THE GRASS.
RATHER THAN RISK DAMAGE FROM MOWING CLOSE AROUND IT, THEY ALLOWED THE GRASS AND WEEDS TO GROW, SO IT NOW LOOKS A LITTLE MORE FORLORN THAN IT WOULD ON THE RAMP.
THE LOCATION DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE HARMED THE AIRPLANE AT ALL.
THIS AIRPLANE IS NOT A FLORIDA BIRD AT ALL!
THE LOGBOOKS (WE HAVE THEM ALL, SINCE BRAND NEW), SHOW THE AIRPLANE WAS IN NORTH DAKOTA FOR THE 1970"S, CHINO CALIFORNIA FOR SOME OF THE 1980"S, THEN NEAR DENVER COLORADO, THEN IN UTAH UNTIL MID 2020 (THE LAST LOG ENTRIES), SO IT HAS BEEN IN FLORIDA FOR A YEAR OR LESS!
THE PAINT IS INTACT AND PRESENTABLE ALL AROUND WITH A FEW SCREW HEADS SHOWING SOME RUST BUT FAR FROM ALL, AND NO CORROSION BUBBLING OR FLAKING ANYWHERE I SAW!
AND THE BELLY PANELS WERE UNSCREWED, SO I SAW THE WHOLE BELLY AND THE BOTTOM OF THE WING! ALL LOOKS GOOD, NO ISSUES.
INSIDE, THE TAN SEATS WITH TAN SOFT CLOTH INSERTS LOOKS VERY NICE, INCLUDING ADJUSTABLE HEADRESTS.
THE DOOR PANEL PLASTIC HAS SOME CRACKS, BUT IS FULLY INTACT, AND THE BALANCE OF THE PLASTICS LOOK PRETTY GOOD.
THE TINTED WINDOWS AND WINDSHIELD ARE FINE, BUT NOT AS CLEAR AS I PREFER. I BELIEVE NEW WINDOW GLASS IS WORTH THE EXPENSE, AS IT BOTH TRANSFORMS THE EXTERIOR LOOK AND IMPROVES VISIBILITY FOR SAFER FLIGHT. THATS JUST ME.
