WHILE CESSNA WAS MAKING 120"S AND 140"S, AND PIPER IT"S J-3 CUB, BELLANCA"S 14-13 (KNOWN AS THE CARDBOARD CONSTELLATION DUE TO ITS WOOD WING AND THE DISTINCTIVE ENDPLATES ON IT"S HORIZONTAL, LIKE THE BIG AIRLINER) WAS A 150 HORSEPOWER, 165 MPH SPEEDSTER ABLE TO TAKE 4 PEOPLE 600 MILES IN 1 HOP !!
THIS AIRCRAFT HAS HAD 8 OWNERS ACCORDING TO THE LOGBOOK
THE COLOR IS TENNESSEE RED
IT HAD A MAJOR RESTORATION IN THE EARLY 1980"S, INCLUDING RECOVER WITH STITS, NEW GLASS, NEW INTERIOR.
NOT FLOWN FROM 1991 TO 2014, BUT RUN PERIODICALLY AND HANGERED THROUGHOUT.
LAST ANNUAL 8/22/2015, AND IT HAS 9 HOURS SINCE
THE FRANKLIN 6A4-150-B3 150 H.P. ENGINE HAS 117 SMOH
1 MAG OVERHAULED AND OIL CHANGED 4/27/2016, AND THE ENGINE HAS 2 HOURS SINCE THEN
AND THEN IT HAPPENED
THE AIRPLANE WENT PAST THE END OF RUNWAY ON A HIGH SPEED TAXI.
BOTH LANDING GEAR SUPPORTS (NOT THE MAIN LEGS, BUT THE RETRACT SUPPORT) FAILED AS THE AIRPLANE HIT A BERM
THE LEFT AXLE ALSO FAILED
THE AIRCRAFT WENT UP ON IT"S NOSE, BUT DID NOT FLIP OVER
DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE TWO GEAR ACTUATING RODS, THE LEFT AXLE, THE LOWER COWLING AND NOSE BOWL.
UNFORTUNATELY THE "RECOVERY TEAM" PICKED THE AIRPLANE UP WITH A STRAP AROUND THE FORWARD FUSELAGE, AND WRINKLED THE SHEET METAL ON BOTH SIDES, FORWARD OF THE WING (SHOWN). THE SKIN IS AERODYNAMIC, NOT STRUCTURAL, SO THE MAIN TUBING SUPPORT WAS NOT AFFECTED
THE BELLY IS VIRTUALLY UNAFFECTED, AS EVIDENCED BY THE UNDAMAGED ANTENNA MOUNTED FORWARD AND LOW, AND EVEN THE EXHAUST PIPE IS UNHURT.
BOTH WING SKINS HAVE TEARS IN THE FABRIC UNDERSIDE, FROM THE ATTACH POINTS OUTBOARD ABOUT MIDSPAN. THE SHAPE IS NOT STRAIGHT, RATHER JAGGED AND IRREGULAR. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHO DID IT OR WHAT CAUSED IT. IT WILL REQUIRE SKIN REPAIR IN THIS AREA
THE PROPELLOR IS DAMAGED, OF COURSE, EVEN THOUGH THE POWER WAS OFF AS THEY WERE TRYING TO GET STOPPED.
THERE IS A FAINT WHISPER OF A DENT IN THE FIREWALL, BUT IT SEEMS TO WHISPER "I WAS HERE BEFORE THIS INCIDENT"
LOOK AT HOW NICE THE REST OF THE PLANE LOOKS !!
IT WOULD BE VERY REASONABLE TO GET THIS BABY BACK INTO THE AIR, AND YOU WOULD BE WELCOMED AT ANY ANTIQUE AIRSHOW IN THE COUNTRY !!
IT ALSO WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO SET THIS AIRPLANE UP FOR A GREAT STATIC DISPLAY !! DENVER INTERNATIONAL HAS ONE HANGING IN THE CONCOURSE, AND IT IS AN ATTENTION GETTER
THE RADIOS WERE OUT OF THE AIRPLANE AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, BUT THEY ARE INCLUDED. DUAL MK 12"S WITH DUAL VOA-4 CLASSIC INDICATORS.
THE REST OF THE INSTRUMENTATION IS STILL INSTALLED, AS SHOWN.
LOGBOOKS FOR AIRFRAME AND ENGINE ARE SPOTTY, BUT AIRFRAME LOGS APPEAR TO BE COMPLETE FROM 1971, AND ENGINE IS SHOWN OVERHAULED AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY, PROBABLY AROUND 1984, BUT NO DETAIL IS PROVIDED. ENGINE LOGS GO THROUGH MID 2016
