ROBUST, WELL BUILT, 4 PLACE AIRPLANE, NOT A TOY OR KITE !!
GREAT OFF THE HARD SURFACE AIRPLANE, FORGIVING AND DOCILE.
THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN IN REGULAR USE. NTHE LAST ANNUAL WAS JUST PERFORMED 9/2017 (SO IT IS STILL IN CALENDAR ANNUAL, NOT A BARN FIND OR RAMP QUEEN).
TOTAL AIRFRAME TIME IS 1747 HOURS SINCE NEW !!
WE HAVE ALL OF THE CONSECUTIVE AIRFRAME LOGS BACK TO BRAND NEW !!
AS THIS AIRPLANE WAS WELL LOVED AND WELL CARED FOR, THE OWNER HAS UPGRADED AND UPDATED IT ALONG THE WAY. AT THE ANNUAL LAST FALL (9/15/2017) HE SPENT THE MONEY FOR NEW CLEVELAND WHEELS AND BRAKES !!
CLEVELANDS ARE FANTASTIC, TROUBLE FREE DISC BRAKES, AND EVERYONE WANTS THEM.
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS LONG TIME OWNER WAS USED TO THE FAR LESS EFFECTIVE DRUM BRAKES THIS AIRPLANE USED TO HAVE, AND WITH LIMITED EXPERIENCE WITH HOW THESE BRAKES WOULD AFFECT THE AIRPLANE (LESS THAN 3 HOURS SINCE INSTALLATION) HE APPLIED THEM JUST A LITTLE TOO HARD WHILE TAXIING WITH A FOLLOWING WIND, AND SURE ENOUGH, THE AIRPLANE WENT OVER, SLOWLY ONTO IT"S NOSE !
THE PILOT/OWNER, HORRIFIED, GOT OUT OF THE AIRPLANE, AND HELD ON TO THE REAR LIFT STRUT ON THE LEFT SIDE, IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THE AIRPLANE FROM TIPPING ONTO ONE WING.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE WIND WAS TOO STRONG, AND THE AIRPLANE SLOWLY FELL OVER ONTO THE RIGHT WING. YOU CAN"T SAY THE PILOT DIDN"T TRY, AS HE ACTUALLY BENT THE LEFT REAR LIFT STRUT HE WAS HOLDING ONTO !!
SO THIS WAS REALLY A STATIONARY WIND EVENT, NOT AN IN MOTION ACCIDENT, AND THERE IS NO MENTION OF IT IN THE LOGBOOKS OR ASSOCIATED PAPERWORK .
DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE RIGHT NOSEBOWL LOWER, THE CENTER AIR SCOOP, BUT NOT THE LOWER COWL, AND THE RIGHT WING OUTBOARD (AND THAT LEFT REAR STRUT). THAT"S IT !!
THE LEFT WING IS NOT DAMAGED
THE FLAPS ON BOTH SIDES LOOK GOOD AND THE LEFT AILERON IS GOOD, BUT THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT AILERON, SHOWN.
THE INBOARD END OF THE RIGHT WING, INCLUDING THE TANK AREA AND THE LIFT STRUTS ARE UNDAMAGED
THE FUSELAGE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE DAMAGED AT ALL, ANYWHERE, INCLUDING THE ATTACHMENT POINTS FOR THE RIGHT WING, WHICH MAKES SENSE, SEEING HOW THE DAMAGE OCCURRED.
THE GLASS AND WINDSHIELD LOOK GOOD.
THE TAIL FEATHERS OF THIS AIRPLANE WERE NOT DAMAGED, AND THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOOK FINE, BUT WE NOTED THAT THE LOWER RUDDER AND BOTH ELEVATORS HAVE SOME STOP DRILLED CRACKS DUE TO AGE, NOT ACCIDENT.
THE MAIN GEAR AND GEAR BOXES ARE UNDAMAGED, THIS WAS NOT A GROUND LOOP !!
THE SCOTT 3200 TAILWHEEL AND SPRING, PLUS THE MOUNTING AREA, ARE ALL GOOD.
THE IPPER COWL IS NOT DAMAGED, AND THE SCOOP AND NOSEBOWL ARE CERTAINLY REPAIRABLE.
INSIDE, THE BLUE CLOTH/VINYL INTERIOR LOOKS VERY NICE, AND I AM IMPRESSED THAT THE FACTORY REAR SEATS IN A 1948 AIRPLANE HAS SUCH BIG AND NICE HEADRESTS ON THE REAR SEATS
THE 108-3 WAS A CLASSY AIRPLANE FOR IT"S DAY, AND YOU WILL NOTE THE REAL WOOD TRIM ON THE REAR SIDE PANELS AND SEE THAT STINSON DID THAT BACK WHEN THERE WERE WOOD CRAFTSMAN !
THE DASH INCLUDES THE BASIC FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS (BUT NOT THE GYROS) AND ALL OF THE AIRFRAME AND ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION.
THE AVIONICS WERE REMOVED FROM THIER TRAYS, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, SO YOU CAN CHOOSE YOUR OWN! A SIMPLE COMM AND TRANSPONDER HAD BEEN INSTALLED, AND THAT CAN BE ENOUGH FOR THIS TYPE OF AIRPLANE, BUT A GARMIN 430 WOULD SURE BE FUN TOO. YOU CHOOSE !!
THE ENGINE, WHICH SUSTAINED A PROP STRIKE, WAS UNBOLTED FROM THE UNDAMAGED ENGINE MOUNT AND ALL OF THE ENGINE CONTROL CABLES ARE STILL INSTALLED, AND UNDAMAGED, ALONG WITH THE FIREWALL MOUNTED ITEMS LIKE GASCOLATOR, VOLTAGE REGULATOR, STARTER SOLENOID, ETC. ARE STILL INSTALLED AND INCLUDED, BUT THE ENGINE AND IT"S BOLT-ON ACCESSORIES IS NOT.
THIS AIRPLANE IS IN A SELF STORAGE LOCKER IN SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
