MODIFYING AND REINFORCING THE PA-24-250, AND ADDING PARTS FROM THE PA-30 TWIN
COMANCHE, ALSO INTRODUCED IN 1964, PUG WAS ABLE TO BUILD HIMSELF A HOT-ROD IN
THE CLASSIC SENSE !!
LIKE A HOT-RODDER, HE MODIFIED AN EXISTING CHASSIS, AND
ADDED THE BIGGEST ENGINE AVAILABLE, IN THIS CASE, 2 IO-360 200 H.P. ENGINES IN A
SINGLE CASE, WITH A SINGLE CRANKSHAFT, MAKING AN IO-720, WITH 400 HORSEPOWER
!!
THE WAY I HEARD IT, HE FIGURED THAT IF HE STARTED WITH 400 H.P., HE WOULD
STILL HAVE 300 HORSEPOWER IN THE THIN AIR AT 10,000 FEET AND ABOVE, WHICH SHOULD
BE ENOUGH TO PUSH HIM QUICKLY THROUGH THAT THIN AIR !!

THE PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE CLAIMS HE HAD A TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE IN
FLIGHT. UNABLE TO LOWER THE GEAR ELECTRICALLY, HE CRANKED IT DOWN PER THE
MANUAL, AND LANDED. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED NORMALLY, BUT ON THE RUNOUT, THE GEAR
RETRACTED.
I WASNT THERE, SO I DON"T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED, BUT WHEN I
WAS THERE THIS WEEK, I FLIPPED THE MASTER SWITCH, AND EVERYTHING LIT UP
!!
POSSIBLY THE WIRE THAT WIGGLED LOOSE, WIGGLED BACK AGAIN !!
REGARDLESS,
THIS AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE TO SOME OF THE FORWARD BELLY.
STARTING AT THE
FRONT, THE LOWER COWLING BOLT IN LOWER CENTER PANEL HAS SOME LIGHT SCRAPING,
SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT
THE LEFT NOSE GEAR DOOR HAS A SCRAPE ON THE
AFT SIDE
THE RIGHT SIDE NOSE DOOR IS VERY LIGHTLY SCRAPED
THE FIREWALL IS
NOT DAMAGED
JUST AFT OF THE FIREWALL, (AFT OF THE NOSE WHEEL)THIS AIRPLANE
HAS A FIBERGLASS SPEED FAIRING, WHICH IS NOW WORN THROUGH. THE GOOD NEWS, IS
THAT THIS FIBERGLASS REDUCED THE DAMAGE THAT SHOULD HAVE OCCURRED WHEN THE BELLY
HIT THE TARMAC !!
AFT OF THE FAIRING, THERE IS SCRAPING DAMAGE TO SEVERAL OF
THE FORWARD BELLY SKINS., BUT THERE ARE SPOTS WERE ONLY THE RIVIT HEADS ARE
SCRAPED, NOT THE UNDERLYING SKIN !!
THE ONLY "HANGING LOOSE" SKIN IS SCREWED
ON, NOT RIVITED, AND THE UNDERLYING STRUCTURE IS NOT WORN THOUGH, JUST THIS
REMOVABLE PANEL, AND WITH SCREW REPLACEMENT. IT COULD BE USED
TEMPORARILY.
BOTH COWL FLAP DOORS ARE SCRAPED, BUT NOT WORN THROUGH, AND THEY
SHOULD NOT REQUIRE SKINNING, ONLY REPAINTING
THERE IS ONE FLAP HANGER BRACKET
ON THE LEFT WING THAT HAS SOME SCRAPING, BUT IT IS NOT WORN THROUGH. THE
FIBERGLASS FAIRINGS ON TWO HINGES HAVE SCRAPING. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE
FLAPTHE PITOT TUBE IS SCRAPED, AND THE BRACKET BROKEN, BUT THE WING ISNT DAMAGED AT ALLIN FACT, NEITHER WING HAS ANY DAMAGE !!THE RIGHT WING, SURFACES, TIP AND HANGERS ARE UNDAMAGED !!
THE LEFT FIBERGLASS WINGTIP, WHICH IS THE LATEST, "UPSWEPT" STYLE, WITH
NAV/STROBE LIGHT COVERS, HAS A SLIGHT WEAR AREA ON THE TRAILING EDGE, AND THE
OUTBOARD EDGE SKIN ON THE LEFT AILERON IS SCRAPED.
THE FIBERGLASS CAP ON THE
LEFT HORIZONTAL IS SCRAPED THROUGH, AND THE LOWER SKIN IS SCRAPED TROUGH AT THE
REAR EDGE
THE TAIL TIE-DOWN RING IS PARTIALLY SCRAPED ON THE BOTTOM
BOTH
OF THE SHORT EXHAUST STACKS THAT COME OFF OF THE TURBOS ARE SCRAPED AND
FLATTENED ON THE ENDS, BUT THE HEAT MUFF AND ATTACHMENT POINTS BOTH LOOK

THE 3 BLADE HARTZELL PROPELLOR IS BENT ON ALL 3 BLADES, AS THE PROP
CONTINUED TO TURN AS THE AIRPLANE WENT DOWN. ENGINE WAS AT IDLE, OF
