1966 CESSNA 150F, 4468 TT, 1557 SMOH, GREAT LITTLE AIRPLANE, NEEDS A LITTLE TO ANNUAL, CHEAP !!
THIS IS A GOOD LITTLE AIRPLANE
THE F MODEL 150 HAS THE SWEPT BACK VERTICAL FIN, SO IT HAS THE SAME OVERALL LOOK AS THE LATER VERSIONS AND THE 152
EQUIPPED WITH A CONTINENTAL O-200A 100 H.P. LIKE ALL 150"S, AND THIS HAS PROVEN TO BE A RELIABLE, TROUBLE FREE ENGINE.
THIS AIRFRAME HAS BEEN A 1 OWNER AIRPLANE SINCE 1993, AND HAS ONLY 4468 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW !!
STRIPPED AND PAINTED IN 1990, IT LOOKS GOOD OVERALL, NO OBVIOUS CORROSION ISSUES OR PEELING PAINT
THE INTERIOR LOOKS VERY GOOD, WITH NICE CLOTH SEATS AND A CLEAN DASH AND REAR COMPARTMENT
EVEN AN STC"D SKI RACK IN THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT ! (IT HAS BEEN BASED IN SKI-CRAZY NORTHERN MICHIGAN)
THE ENGINE HAS 1557 SMOH IN 1994, WITH SUPERIOR CYLINDERS, AND THE COMPRESSIONS 6/2015 WERE ALL GOOD AT 74, 70, 69, AND 76 !!
THE LONG TIME OWNER OF THIS AIRPLANE BROUGHT HIS AIRPLANE IN TO A NEW MECHANIC (HIS PREVIOUS ONE MOVED AWAY), AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANNUAL, AFTER MANY MAINTENANCE ITEMS HAD BEEN COMPLIED WITH, THE MECHANIC PRESENTED HIM WITH A DISCREPANCY LIST.
NOW THIS IS AN OLD, INEXPENSIVE AIRPLANE, SO IT IS REASONABLE THAT THERE WILL BE SOME SMALL ITEMS THAT NEED ATTENTION FROM YEAR TO YEAR, AND THE LIST CONTAINED SOME OF THESE SMALL, INEXPENSIVE ITEMS.
WHAT SURPRISED THE LONGTIME OWNER WAS ONE ITEM ON THE LIST: FIREWALL DAMAGED !
THIS WAS A SURPRISE TO THE OWNER, BECAUSE AS THE ONLY PILOT, HE HADNT HAD ANY HARD LANDING ISSUES IN THE LAST YEAR, OR REALLY EVER !!
THE MECHANIC SHOWED HIM AN AREA OF THE CENTER LOWER FIREWALL WHICH HAD A WRINKLE, 4 INCHES LONG BY 2 INCHES OR SO HIGH, AND SAID HE WOULD NOT SIGN OFF THE ANNUAL WITHOUT REPAIRING THIS SECTION (ACTUALLY HE QUOTED A COMPLETE FIREWALL REPLACEMENT !)
THE LONG TIME OWNER, WHO HAD ONLY FLOWN THE AIRPLANE 34 HOURS IN THE LAST 2 YEARS, AND HAD RECENTLY LOST HIS MEDICAL, BALKED AT THE COST, AND SOLD THE AIRCRAFT TO ME.
THE ANNUAL HAS BEEN SIGNED OFF AS OF 6/2015, PENDING COMPLIANCE WITH ALL AD"S, AND RECTIFYING THE 13 OUTSTANDING DISCREPANCIES, RANGING FROM ELT BATTERY EXPIRED TO 1 YOKE GUIDE WORN, AND SUCH THINGS, ALL VERY LITTLE.
AS FAR AS THE FIREWALL WRINKLE, I HAVE INCLUDED PHOTOS OF THE AREA IN QUESTION. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS AREA IS SLIGHTLY WRINKLED, BUT IT IS ALSO FAIRLY OBVIOUS THAT IT HAS BEEN MESSAGED IN THE PAST, PRESUMABLY FROM PREVIOUS DAMAGE, AND IS NOT FRESH
THIS AREA IS AT THE VERY BOTTOM IN THE CENTER OF THE FIREWALL SKIN, FAR FROM ANY ENGINE MOUNT ATTACH POINT, GEAR, OR STRUCTURE THAT COULD HAVE RECENTLY IMPACTED IT. IT APPEARS TO BE RIGHT WHERE THE LANDING GEAR TUBE (WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY THE ENGINE MOUNT ON A 150, NOT THE FIREWALL) WOULD HIT IT IF IT PARTIALLY OR COMPLETELY COLLAPSED BACK SOMEWHERE IN THE PAST.
IN CHECKING THE LOGBOOKS, I FOUND AN ENTRY IN 1985 (8 YEARS BEFORE THE RECENT OWNER PURCHASED THE AIRCRAFT, AND BEFORE THE REPAINT) WHICH DETAILS REPLACEMENT OF A LOWER SKIN IN THE BELLY, THE RUDDER, AND THE ENGINE MOUNT !!! NO MENTION OF REPLACING THE FIREWALL, (BUT IT IS A FAIR BET THEY STRAIGHTENED THE CENTER LOWER SECTION WHERE THE ENGINE MOUNT HIT IT !
I WAS NOT THERE, AND I WASNT ONE OF THE 7 DIFFERENT MECHANICS THAT ANNUALLED THIS AIRPLANE SINCE 1985, BUT IT SEEMS POSSIBLE THAT THE WRINKLING WE ARE SEEING IS FROM 1800 HOURS OF FLIGHT TIME AND 30 YEARS AGO !!
I RAN THE AIRPLANE YESTERDAY, AFTER REPLACING ALL 4 VALVE COVER GASKETS WITH THICK ORANGE ONES (SCRATCH ONE DISCREPANCY OFF THE LIST)
THE BATTERY IS UP, IT STARTED RIGHT UP, AND SOUNDS GREAT.
NONE OF THE DISCREPANCIES ARE ENGINE RELATED, UNLESS YOU COUNT THE CRACK IN ONE BAFFLE AND A SMALL CRACK IN ONE MUFFLER SHROUD !!!
I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT THIS AIRPLANE BE FLOWN BACK TO THE BUYERS MECHANIC TO FINISH THE ANNUAL. THE GUY WHO DID THE PARTIAL WORK IS NOT BASED AT THE AIRPORT WHERE IT IS STORED, AND THERE ARE NO MECHANICS THERE IN FACT, AS IT IS A SMALL COUNTY AIRPORT IN A RESORT AREA (IT DOES HAVE FUEL HOWEVER)
SHOW YOUR GUY MY PHOTOS AND SEE WHAT HE SAYS.
PROBABLY FINE AS IS, OR PUT A SMALL PATCH ON THAT AREA MAYBE
OIL AND FILTER HAVE BEEN CHANGED, COMPRESSIONS ARE GOOD, WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AND REPACKED, AND SPARK PLUGS HAVE BEEN SERVICED !!
