Bellanca Viking 300 HP Project But Complete And Assembled/Functional With Engine, Prop, Avionics, etc.
Great Opportunity to Acquire Functional High Performance Aircraft At Very Cheap Price!
Great Bargain!Don"t miss this great deal!
This auction is for used but reliable 1967 Bellanca Viking 300 HP private aircraft. The plane is complete and can still fly but needs to have the right wing repaired or replaced due to a crack on the aft spar of the right wing.
The plane was flying regularly (at least since about 2011, as far as I can tell). I"ve owned it for little over two years and have flown it regularly on average twice a month. Last flight was completed on September 30, 2016 right before the annual inspection was due (I will try to post a link to a youtube video of last flight once I upload it).
During the annual inspection, it was discovered that there is a crack in the aft spar of the right wing and the plane was grounded for that reason. Since that time, I have been running the engine for 20-30 minutes and taxing the plane about twice a month to keep the plane running and engine operational.
There is a small opening in walk area of the right wing where the skin has been removed when the crack in the spar was discovered for closer inspection. The pieces of the skin that got removed are still available and can be re-apply (glued) back to the wing to fill the opening for a ferry flight if needed. Right now, the removed skin is just put back into the opening without a glue - I just put a duck tape over it to hold it in place. See the last picture for more details.
Due the the fact that I like flying this plane more than any other plane I"ve ever flown, my original intention was to find a replacement for the wing and I believe I have found a suitable replacement but since I"m short of funds at the moment to acquire and complete the replacement, I decided to list it for sale here.
The factory will fix/replace the wing for $8,000. I found replacement for less than $3,000 but since the replacement wing has different tank configuration (my Viking has only one 19 gal. tank in each wing), it will require replacing both wings (changing tank configuration in a wing is as or more expensive than replacing a wing) so that"s about $6,000 but still cheaper for both wings than fixing one at the factory.
The upside is that the replacement wings have long range tanks so that will extend the max. fuel to 92 gallons (my Viking has also 20 gal. fuselage tank). I will release the contact info of the seller of the replacement wings to the successful high bidder/buyer upon request as a part of the purchase.
The other not so good news about this plane is the paint. As you can see on the pictures, there are many cracks in the paint. Those cracks a mostly due to the fact that the plane was repainted over the original paint some years ago (before my ownership). However, the fabric is good and I don"t find any cracks in the fabrics itself.
Ideally, this plane could use a new paint job but if you like me and don"t care that much about the looks but want to just enjoy flying this wonderful plane, you could just patch the paint cracks with butyrate dope (as some of them have already been - see the silver spots on the tail and other places on the pictures) and you"re good to go.
Interior is dated but I think it"s still nice and serviceable (see pictures).
And now some of the good news. The engine (Continental IO-520D) is very strong (starts every single time without hesitation). It"s just past TBO (1954 SMOH) but it"s 426 STOH (in 2004) and the compressions at the last completed annual were above 70s in all cylinders. I believe that with proper care, this engine will run for another 800+ hours without any major work needed (this opinion is based on the current condition of the engine as stated above).
The engine uses very little oil (probably a quart every like 15 hours or so). The starter adapter was replaced in June 2015 (an $1,200 job!) with an overhauled one from Aircraft Specialties. Generator replaced in 2014.
The prop is 489 SMOH. No leaks.
Total AF time: 3,454.
Battery replaced in 2014 with a sealed type (Concord).
New main tires and brake pads replaced in 2015.
Left flap was overhauled in 2015.
Avionics are bit outdated (Kings) KX-170B and KX175 Nav/Coms (with 2 g/s indicators) but there is also digital com (KY197) and recently acquired KT76C (digital) transponder. The KY197 started showing some hissing occasionally so it may need to be serviced.
Century IIB autopilot (single axis) but appears to work great (used it may times). It"s coupled to Navs and has a heading bug. It can also work as wings leveler.
EDM-800 Engine monitor (works great!).
Four Place Intercom.
Inflatable door seal.
All logs are complete.
Note: the black phone/gps holder on the left yoke is not included.
I really enjoyed flying this plane. It"s fast (it"s like a "sky" Ferrari - almost always climbed close to 2,000 fpm even fully loaded on a hot day!) and extremely agile (this baby can really take tight turns and loves it!).
I also like the simplicity of its construction. Particularly I like the 1967 model that has hydraulic-powered pump for gear and flaps - no electric pump motor like later models (from what I"m told those electric pump motors in later models tend to break often and they cost like $3K or so to fix).
I typically used to cruise around 165 mph with about 13 gph (after I leaned it) at 5,500/6,500 ft. My typical power settings were 22MP/2,350-2,400RPM
Although as I stated I"m short of funds to fix/replace the wing(s) for my Viking right now, it does not mean I"m desperate so please do not insult me with lowball offers. I know this is a project but I know what it"s worth.
The engine, prop and avionics alone are worth close to my Buy-it-Now price so even if you buy for the Buy-it-Now price and part it out, you will still make money. I just don"t have the time and place to take it apart and keep the parts until sold.
I believe this is a very rare opportunity to acquire a complete and flying plane (although not legally with the current right wing) for such a cheap price! I"ve seen ads for a frame like mine without engine and prop for more than my Buy-it-Now price. Even with the price of fixing/replacing the wing(s), you"d still get a fast high performance / complex plane for less than $20K!
Please also note I"m still actively looking for a financing for the wing(s) replacement and that this plane is also listed for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. So if you"re seriously interested, do not wait. Submit your bid ASAP!
Finally, the buyer will be responsible for picking up the plane (I can help coordinate it) and it must be picked up as soon as possible but no later than 30 days from the end date of the auction.
I believe the buyer should be able to obtain a ferry permit to fly the plane to his/her destination (I"m sure it would be cheaper to fly it rather than transport it). I believe the plane is safe to fly even with crack in the aft spar but I leave it up to the buyer to make that determination.
The plane is currently located at Reid Hillview airport (KRHV) in San Jose, CA.
Please look at the pictures and ask questions (if you have them) before placing a bid.
If you want to come and see the plane before you place your bid, I"m OK with that but please let me know in advance when you want to come.
I tried describing the plane and its true condition to my best knowledge and ability.
