OH, DID I MENTION THAT THIS AIRPLANE HAS A ONE OF A KIND PAINT SCHEME WITH COLOR CHANGING PAINT !!
NO SLOUCH IN THE SPEED DEPARTMENT EITHER, WITH FLAP AND AILERON GAP SEALS, LONG, LATE STYLE DORSAL FIN, WING TO FUSELAGE FAIRINGS AND HORNER STYLE WINGTIPS (MORE SPEED IN CRUISE, MORE CONTROL IN SLOW FLIGHT) WITH BUILT IN LEADING EDGE RECOGNITION LIGHTS !!
WHEEL PANTS ALL AROUND, BECAUSE THEY MAKE THE AIRPLANE FASTER, AND LOOK BETTER !!
WELL MAINTAINED AND UPGRADED, THE PARTNERS ALWAYS DID WHATEVER THE AIRPLANE NEEDED, AND THEN SOME !!
WHAT THEY DIDNT KNOW, AND REALLY COULDN"T KNOW, IS THAT THERE WAS A GREMLIN IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM !!
THIS SYSTEM HAD BEEN UPGRADED SOME YEARS AGO WITH THE ARCHER STYLE MUFFLERS (2 SEPARATE SMALL MUFFLERS, ONE FOR EACH TWO CYLINDERS, RATHER THAN THE EARLIER SINGLE CAN) BY THE VIRTUE OF REDUNDANCY, THIS SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN IMMUNE TO THE DANGER OF A PLUGGED EXHAUST.
EXCEPT THAT BOTH CANS BECAME PLUGGED !!
THE INNER HOUSING OF THE MUFFLERS HAS A SECOND TUBE INSIDE THE HOUSING YOU SEE. THIS INNER LINING IS PERFORATED, AND IS CALLED THE FLAME TUBE.
IN THIS CASE, THE FLAME TUBE FAILED IN BOTH CANS. THE FLAME TUBE OPENED UP, WHICH COMPROMISED THE STRENGTH OF THE TUBE, AND IT SAGGED. UNFORTUNATELY THE EXHAUST PIPE COMES OUT THE BOTTOM OF THIS CAN, AND THE SAGGY TUBE PLUGGED UP THIS PIPE OPENING, CREATING BACKPRESSURE, AND KEEPING THE ENGINE FROM PRODUCING POWER.
ONE TUBE IS 60% BLOCKED, SO THESE 2 CYLINDERS WOULD RUN, BUT NOT PRODUCE FULL POWER.
THE OTHER TUBE IS 90% OR MORE BLOCKED, SO WHEN IT FAILED, THOSE 2 CYLINDERS COULD NOT PRODUCE ANY REAL POWER.
IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS CLOSE TO IT"S HOME AIRPORT, SO EVEN WITH THE ENGINE PRODUCING SO LITTLE POWER, HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE A NORMAL APPROACH TO THE RUNWAY. ALL WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT, WITH AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING JUST SHORT OF THE RUNWAY IN THE GRASS OVER-RUN AREA, IF IT WERENT FOR THAT LOW BARBED WIRE FENCE AT THE EDGE OF THE AIRPORT !!
THE PILOT SAW THAT HE WASNT GOING TO CLEAR THE FENCE IF HE DIDNT DO SOMETHING, SO RATHER THAN RISK A STALL BY PULLING UP TOO HARD, HE INCREASED LIFT BY PULLING ON THE FLAPS !!
IT WORKED TOO, AS THE GEAR CLEARED THE FENCE JUST FINE, BUT THE HORIZONTAL DIDNT QUITE.
ONE LEADING EDGE HIT A FENCEPOST, PUTTING A DENT IN THE LEADING EDGE OF THE HORIZONTAL, AND PUSHING THE POST FORWARD. THIS TIGHTENED UP THE SINGLE STRAND OF BARBED WIRE, WHICH MADE A JAGGED TEAR IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT SKIN OF THE TAILCONE, AND PULLED THE NEIGHBORING FENCEPOST INTO THE OTHER SIDE HORIZONTAL LEADING EDGE !!
ALL IN 1 SECOND !!
THE GOOD NEWS?
THE AIRPLANE LANDED JUST FINE, ON IT"S WHEELS, AND ROLLED OUT TO A NORMAL STOP WITH NO PROBLEMS
WITH THE MUFFLERS REMOVED, THE ENGINE IS UNDAMAGED AND PERFECTLY OPERABLE.
THE PROPELLOR WAS NOT DAMAGED, SO THERE WAS NO SUDDEN STOPPAGE TO THE ENGINE, NOR ANY OTHER PERMANENT ENGINE DAMAGE.
THE HORIZONTAL ITSELF IS DAMAGED, BUT BOTH HORIZONTAL TIPS AND BOTH TRIM TABS ARE UNDAMAGED
THE TAILCONE HAS A SLIGHT BUCKLE ON BOTH SIDES A FEW INCHES FORWARD OF THE HORIZONTAL(CAUSED BY THE LEADING EDGE OF THE HORIZONTAL GETTING HIT), AND A CUT ON THE RIGHT SIDE, LOWER SKIN.
THERE IS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THIS AIRPLANE !!
NO DAMAGE TO THE LANDING GEAR
NO DAMAGE TO THE WINGS, TIP, OR CONTROL SURFACES
NO DAMAGE TO THE COWLINGS, FORWARD FUSELAGE, CABIN AREA, OR FIREWALL
ALL OF THE GLASS IS GOOD !!
THE AIRPLANE WAS EQUIPPED WITH KING DIGITAL EQUIPMENT ( KMA-24 AUDIO, KX-155 DIGITAL NAV-COM WITH KI-209 GLIDESLOPE INDICATOR, KX-125 DIGITAL NAV-COM WITH BUILT-IN INDICATOR, KING TRANSPONDER ) AS IS OUR CUSTOM, THESE ITEMS WERE REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, SO YOU WONT PAY FOR EQUIPMENT THAT YOU MAY NOT REALLY WANT, BUT, WE HAVE LEFT THE TRAYS AND ALL WIRING INTACT, SO YOU COULD EASILY SLIP THESE UNITS BACK IN IN 5 MINUTES, WITH NO PAPERWORK OR WIRING, IF YOU WANT TO.
