LIKE THE C-55 BEFORE IT, THE D-55 HAS THE HIGHER PERFORMANCE IO-520C ENGINES, GIVING 25 H.P. MORE PER ENGINE CONTINUOUS, 40 MORE FOR TAKE-OFF THAN THE SIMILAR SIZED B-55 !
THE 285 H.P. CONTINUOUS ENGINES IMPROVE ALL ASPECTS OF THE D-55"S PERFORMANCE NUMBERS !!
NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENTS IN CLIMB RATE, SINGLE ENGINE CLIMB RATE !!, SHORTER TAKE-OFF ROLL, AND OF COURSE 15 KNOTS OR MORE CRUISE SPEED !! A TRUE 195 KNOT+ CRUISER (THAT"S 225 MPH), AND WITH 6 SEATS !!
UNLIKE THE EARLIER C MODEL "SUPER BARON", THE D MODEL IMPROVED THE AIRFRAME AND DETAILS, SO YOU COULD BETTER USE THE EXTRA POWER AND SPACE.
ONE OF THE MOST USEFUL AND RECOGNIZABLE DIFFERENCES IS THE SWITCH TO THE LARGE BAGGAGE DOOR, WHICH MAKES ACCESS TO THE REAR 2 SEATS, OR THE BAGGAGE AREA, FAR EASIER AND SAFER THAN IN THE EARLIER AIRPLANE !!
THIS D-55 HAS A VERY LOW 3,462 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW
PAINTED IN A UNIQUE LIGHT SKY BLUE (ALMOST WHITE, BUT NOT QUITE) OVERALL, IT IS VERY RECOGNIZABLE ON THE RAMP
OVERALL THE AIRFRAME LOOKS VERY CLEAN, AND THERE IS NO OBVIOUS SIGN OF CORROSION ISSUES.
THE WINGS, FUSELAGE AND TAIL LOOK STRAIGHT, BUT THERE IS LIGHT HAIL DAMAGE TO A FEW OF THE CONTROL SURFACES.
I ASSUME THAT THE SKINS OF THE SURFACES, BEING LIGHTER THAN THE WINGS, ETC., SHOW A LITTLE MORE IMPACT THAN THE SURROUNDING HEAVIER SKINS DO. THE FEW SURFACES THAT DO SHOW THE HAIL ARE OBVIOUSLY STILL AIRWORTHY, AS THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN ANNUALED FOR YEARS AFTER THIS EVENT.
THIS AIRCRAFT SUFFERED DAMAGE WHEN THE LEFT GEAR LEG COLLAPSED AS THE END RESULT OF A TIRE BLOWING DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL!
THE AIRCRAFT WAS PULLED TO THE LEFT OFF OF THE RUNWAY BEFORE IT COULD GET AIRBORNE, AND THE LEFT GEAR FOLDED IN DURING THE STRUGGLE TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT STRAIGHT
AS THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT "CRASH LAND" , OR LAND WITH THE GEAR RETRACTED, THE DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME IS AMAZINGLY LIGHT !!
THE AIRFRAME DAMAGE IS ONLY TO:
THE LEFT WING TIP EXTENSION, WHICH HAS WRINKLES IN THE TOP SKIN DUE TO THE WEIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT LEANING ON IT AT THE END OF THE EVENT, AND A SCRAPED AREA INBOARD, BY THE ATTACHMENT POINT
THERE IS A TINY DEFORMATION TO ONE NICKEL SIZED SPOT ON THE FAR OUTBOARD SKIN, WHICH IS PRESUMED TO BE FROM THIS EVENT, BUT IT IS INSIGNIFICANT, AND COULD BE MESSAGED OUT IN 5 MINUTES OR LESS, WITH NO SKIN REPLACEMENT
THE OUTER EDGE OF THE LEFT AILERON LOWER SKIN HAS A VERY SMALL SCRAPED AREA, WHICH WILL REQUIRE A PATCH. THE UPPER SURFACE AND RIBS DO NOT SHOW ANY DAMAGE
THE LEFT FLAP HAS A LITERAL SCRAPE, MOSTLY JUST IN THE PAINT, IN ONE SMALL SPOT, AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE ANY REPAIR AT ALL !!
THE SAME FOR THE LEFT ELEVATOR, WHOSE DAMAGE TO ONE SMALL SPOT DID NOT WEAR THROUGH THE SKIN, JUST A SCRAPE !
THE LEFT INBOARD MAIN GEAR DOOR, WHICH WAS RETRACTED AS IT IS DESIGNED TO BE WHEN THE GEAR IS DOWN, WAS DENTED WHEN THE WHEEL FOLDED UP INTO IT, BUT THE GEAR WELL, AND THE WING IN THIS AREA, IS UNDAMAGED !!
THE BRAKE CALIPER IS SCRAPED ON THE LOWER OUTBOARD EDGE, AND SHOULD BE REPLACED, ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS TO NOT BE LEAKING, AND STILL FUNCTIONAL AS IS
MY INSPECTION DID NOT SHOW ANY DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL ITSELF, NOR TO THE BRAKE ROTOR
THE OUTBOARD GEAR DOOR DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE ANY DAMAGE.
THAT"S IT !!!!
NO OTHER KNOWN AIRFRAME DAMAGE !!
AS I SAID EARLIER, THIS WAS NOT A GEAR UP, WITH ALL OF IT"S RESULTANT BELLY SCRAPING !!
THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR AND NOSEGEAR DID NOT COLLAPSE !!!
THE FUSELAGE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE !!!
NO RIGHT SIDE DAMAGE TO ANY PART OF THE AIRCRAFT, WINGS, GEAR, TAIL, ETC !!
NOSE GEAR DOORS, PITOT, NOSE CONE AND RADOME, ALL UNDAMAGED
NO OTHER LEFT SIDE DAMAGE THAN WHAT I MENTIONED AND IS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS !!
NO DAMAGE OR SCRAPING TO THE COWLS OR EXHAUST EVEN ON THE LEFT SIDETHE WING DEICE RUBBER BOOTS ARE IN POOR CONDITION
AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, BOTH PROPELLOR BALDES ON THE LEFT SIDE ARE BENT, SO THE ENGINE WILL REQUIRE A PROP STRIKE INSPECTION, BUT AS THE ENGINE ONLY HAS 797 HOURS SINCE A FACTORY OVERHAUL (ABOUT HALF LIFE REMAINING BEFORE TBO) IT WILL NOT REQUIRE AN OVERHAUL !! EQUIPPED WITH PROP DEICE.
THE RIGHT ENGINE WAS REMOVED AFTER THE INCIDENT TO GET ANOTHER AIRPLANE UP AND RUNNING QUICKLY, AND IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION, SORRY.
THE RIGHT ENGINE WAS PROPERLY REMOVED, WITH PLANS FOR REPLACEMENT, SO NO WIRES OR CABLES WERE CUT, AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND MOUNTING HARDWARE ARE INTACT AND INCLUDED !!
A FEW OF THE RADIO PANEL UNITS WERE SIMILARLY SLID OUT OF THERE TRAYS AND DISCONNECTED, BUT NO WIRES WERE CUT IN THE PROCESS, SO REPLACEMENT OF THESE UNITS WOULD BE A SIMPLE SLIDE IN, OR UPGRADE TO YOUR DREAM STACK !!
