1971 PIPER PA-39 TWIN COMANCHE CR, 3,507 TT, 1435 L&R, ENG’S AND PROPS, FUEL EXHAUST, BELLY LANDING, NEAT!!THE TWIN COMANCHE IS A VERY UNIQUE AIRPLANE, BASICALLY UNMATCHED IN THE AVIATION WORLD!A TWIN WITH ULTRA RELIABLE 4 CYLINDER LYCOMING ENGINES, ALMOST BULLET-PROOF, (LIKE THE EARLY APACHE), LIKE THE EARLY APACHE.UNLIKE THE EARLY APACHE, WHICH HAD A FUSELAGE SHAPED LIKE A POTATO, WITH AERODYNAMICS FROM AN OLD NASH, THE TWIN COMANCHE IS BASED ON THE PA-24 SINGLE COMANCHE, WITH CLEAN LINES, LAMINAR FLOW WINGS AND A SWEPT BACK WINDSHIELD! ADD THE POINTY NOSECONE AND THE AIRPLANE LOOKS SLEEK, NOT APACHE-LIKE!I RECENTLY SAW A VERY GOOD COMPARISON OF THE TWIN COMANCHE PERFORMANCE TO A V-35 BONANZA WITH AN IO-520 ENGINE.CABIN SIZE, RANGE, SPEED, FUEL BURN, CLIMB RATE, LANDING AND TAKEOFF REQUIREMENTS, ETC. WERE ALL WITHIN 5-9% OF EACH OTHER, WITH THE BONANZA BETTER IN SOME PERAMETERS AND THE TWIN CO IN OTHERS.SO THAT MEANS WITH THE TWIN COMANCHE YOU GET TWIN ENGINED RELIABILITY AND SAFETY (THE BONANZA DON’T FLY SO GOOD WITHOUT THE ONE ENGINE RUNNING), NO V-TAIL INSTABILITY OR FAILURE ISSUES, LONGER TBO AND FAR LESS ENGINE MAINTENANCE BETWEEN OVERHAULS.AND YOU USUALLY GET IT FOR LESS MONEY!!BUT THIS AIRPLANE ISN’T AN ORDINARY TWIN COMANCHE!!THE PA-39 IS THE LAST OF THE TWIN COMANCHE LINE TO MAKE PRODUCTION BEFORE THE LINE WAS TERMINATED AFTER THE PIPER FACTORY FLOODED IN JUNE OF 1972.THE PA-39 WAS UPDATED TO BE A MORE MODERN AIRPLANE, HENCE THE NEW DESIGNATION (THE ORIGINAL TWIN COMANCHE WAS A PA-30, THEN 30B, THEN 30C). THE PA-39 HAD ALL OF THE IMPROVEMENTS OF THE WELL REGARDED “C”, WITH A CLEANER DASH, BETTER SEATS AND OH, ACOUNTER-ROTATING RIGHT ENGINE!!!!!!BY SPINNING THE RIGHT ENGINE LEFT, PIPER ELIMINATED THE “CRITICAL” ENGINE, THE ONE WHERE IF YOU LOOSE IT, YOU HAVE TO BASICALLY PULL THE OTHER ONE BACK TO KEEP THE AIRPLANE FROM FLIPPING OVER!!ALL PIPER TWINS SINCE THE PA-39 HAVE HAD COUNTER-ROTATING ENGINES!!BUT A MODERN, CLEAN DASH LAYOUT, GOOD SEATING FOR 4 WITH A BIG BAGGAGE AREA AND DOOR AND ALL OF THE OTHER DESIREABLE FEATURES OF THE PA-39 ARE NOT VERY HELPFUL IF YOU DO NOT FORGET TO PUT GAS IN IT!!NEW PILOT. 2 HOUR FLIGHT, THOUGHT HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT!HE WAS ALMOST RIGHT, AS AFTER HE RAN OUT (AT NIGHT) IN THE RIGHT SIDE, THE LEFT KEPT GOING LONG ENOUGH TO GET HIM OVER THE HUGE CANYON AND WITHIN SIGHT OF THE AIRPORT!!HE KEPT THE GEAR TUCKED UP, WHICH WORKED OUT FOR HIM, AS THE GROUND WAS FIRM BUT NOT ABRASIVE LIKE THE RUNWAY SURFACE, BUT NOT SO SOFT HE DUG WAY IN!THE BEST THING IS THAT TO RECOVER THE AIRPLANE, THE OWNER ONLY NEEDED TO CAREFULLY LIFT THE AIRPLANE, PUT THE UNDAMAGED LANDING GEAR DOWN, AND TOW THE AIRPLANE BACK TO IT’S HANGER, WHICH IS WHERE IT IS NOW, COMPLETELY ASSEMBLED AND INTACT, AS SHOWN!THE RIGHT ENGINE (WHICH IS THE LEFT TURNING IN THIS COUNTER-ROTATING APPLICATION), WAS NOT RUNNING AND FEATHERED TO REDUCE DRAG WHEN HE PUT IT DOWN, SO THAT PROP IS NOT DAMAGED.THE LEFT SIDE PROP WASN’T UNDER POWER BUT IT WAS STILL SPINNING, SO THE BLADE TIPS ARE BENT ON THIS PROP (THE STANDARD TURNING ENGINE AND STANDARD TWIN COMANCHE PROP).BOTH ENGINES WERE MATTITUCK OVERHAULS 12/1999 WITH NEW CYLINDERS. AS EXPECTED, THEY HAVE HAD NO SERIOUS ISSUES AND NOW HAVE 1,435 SMOH AND COMPRESSIONS ALL IN THE MID SEVENTIES ON BOTH ENGINES!BOTH PROPS WERE OVERHAULED 12/1999 (THE RIGHT PROP WITH 2 BRAND NEW BLADES) AND RESEALED AND INSPECTED IN 2006.THE AIRFRAME HAS A LOW 3,507 TT SINCE NEW!THERE IS SOME WRINKLING TO SKINS ON THE BELLY AND THE NOSECONE SIDE SKIN ON THE RIGHT SIDE, BUT THE UNDERLYING RIBS WERE NOT SCRAPED AS IN A RUNWAY GEAR UP. ONLY THE CENTER BELLY HAS ANY DAMAGE, THE LEFT NOSE DOOR LOOKS OK, THE RIGHT ONLY TWEAKED A LITTLE, THE NACELLES WERE NOT DAMAGED AND NEITHER WING, NOR THE TAILCONE OR TAIL SURFACES ARE DAMAGED AT ALL!NO CONTROL SURFACE DAMAGETHE ONLY DAMAGE VISIBLE AT ALL WITHOUT LAYING ON THE GROUND AND LOOKING UP ARE THE RIGHT NOSECONE SKIN WRINKLE AND THE LEFT PROP BEND.EVEN THE LEFT SPINNER IS UNDAMAGED.FRAMELESS SIDE GLASS AND ONE PIECE WINDSHIELD LOOK GREAT!INSIDE, THE INTERIOR IS VERY NICE!4 MODERN BUCKETS, WITH LIGHT TAN LEATHER IS GREAT CONDITION!MATCHING SIDE PANELS WITH WOODGRAIN ACCENTS.DEEP BLUE CARPETINGTHE DASH HAS A BIG AIRPLANE THROTTLE QUADRANT, CENTER STACK AVIONICS AND A WELL LAYED OUT 6 PACK FOR INSTRUMENTS.NEWEST STYLE LARGE RAM’S HORN YOKES LIKE A NAVAJOYOU WILL NOTICE THIS AIRPLANE HAS A KING KCS-55A HSI SYSTEM INSTALLEDYOU CAN’T SEE IT VERY CLEARLY IN THE PHOTOS, BUT THIS NEWER AIRPLANE ALSO HAS A NEWER AUTOPILOT!THE ALTIMATIC IIIC (CALLED A CENTURY III IN BONANZAS, BELLANCAS, ETC,) IS A SOLID STATE FULLY FEATURED ALTITUDE HOLD AUTOPILOT SYSTEM, WITH WING LEVELING, RADIO TRACKING AND HEADING BUG, ALTITUDE HOLD, VERTICAL SPEED SELECT, GLIDESLOPE AND LOCALIZER COUPLING!I HAVE USED THIS SYSTEM IN BELLANCAS, LANCE AND CHEROKEE SIX AND I LOVE IT!FAR MORE RELIABLE AND USER FRIENDLY THAN THE ALTIMATIC II FOUND IN MOST EARLIER TWIN COMANCHES THAT DON’T WORK ANYMORE!A GOOD WORKING CENTURY III/ALTIMATIC IIIC OWNER WILL NEVER CONSIDER A NEED TO UPGRADE!IN ADDITION TO THE AUTOPILOT SYSTEM AND THE KING ELECTRIC HSI SYSTEM, THE DASH IS COMPLETE WITH ALL INSTRUMENTS SHOWN AND THE STANDARD ENGINE GUAGES, SWITCHGEAR, ETC.WIRED FOR AND TRAYS INSTALLED FOR PS ENGINEERING AUDIO PANEL WITH INTERCOM, AND A KING KX-155 NAV-COM, BUT THE PANEL UNITS ARE NOT INSTALLED OR INCLUDED HERE!SOLD WITH LOGBOOKS FOR THE AIRFRAME BACK TO NEW IN 1971, ENGINES FROM MATTITUCK OVERHAULS AND PROPS SINCE SENSENICH OVERHAULS.PLUS WEIGHT AND BALANCE, AD LISTS, OWNERS MANUAL, ETC.,ETC.AND THE FAA BILL OF SALEAND THE FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE!LOCATED AT THE CROSBYTON TEXAS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (8F3) EAST OF LUBBOCK THIS IS A VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD REPAIR!ONE MIGHT BE ENTERPRISING ENOUGH TO REPLACE THE LEFT PROP AND FERRY THE AIRPLANE, BUT THAT IS A PERSONAL DECISION.SPECIAL TWIN COMANCHE, IN GREAT SHAPE, AT A FRACTION OF IT’S VALUE!!DON’T MISS IT!
