THE 1972 CHEROKEE 140 HAS MORE IN COMMON WITH THE WARRIOR THAN IT DOES THE EARLY 140’S.
LATE STYLE DASH WITH A CLEAN SIX-PACK GUAGE LAYOUT.
LATE STYLE “FLATER” SEATS, ARE SCULPTED IN, NOT HUMPED UP LIKE THE OLD CHEROKEES.
QUADRANT MOUNTED THROTTLE AND MIXTURE LEVERS, ALLOW FOR EASIER VISUAL SETTING, AND EASY FINE ADJUSTMENTS, AND HONESTLY, JUST SEEM MORE MODERN.
THIS AIRPLANE HAS ADDITIONAL UPGRADES, WHICH HELP THE MORE “MODERN” LOOK.
LATE STYLE RAM’S HORN CONTROL WHEELS FROM THE WARRIOR/ARCHER, LOOK AND FEEL BETTER.
THE FIBERGLASS “HAT RACK” IN THE REAR ADDS THE UPPER STORAGE AREA, AND ACTUALLY PUSHES THE WHOLE CABIN AREA BACK FOR MORE ROOM.
THIS AIRPLANE ONLY HAS 2 SEATS CURRENTLY INSTALLED, BUT THE SEATBELTS ARE THERE FOR THE REAR SEATS, AND IF YOU WANT TO ADD THEM, WE WILL PROVIDE A SET OF USED SEATS FROM OUR INVENTORY AT NO CHARGE (THE UPHOLSTERY WILL NOT MATCH).
SHOULDER HARNESSES, WHICH PIPER DETERMINED TO BE THE NUMBER 1 SAFETY ADD ON POSSIBLE.
FIBERGLASS “METCO” WINGTIPS, NOT THE ROUNDED ONES FOUND STANDARD ON ALL HERSHEY BAR CHEROKEES HELP THE “WARRIOR” LOOK EVEN FURTHER, AS THEY ARE THE STYLE FOUND ON A WARRIOR.
THIS AIRPLANE IS VERY UNIQUE, IN THAT IT HAS FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING !!
SO COMMON NOW, BUT IN 1970’S AIRPLANES, IT WAS 1 IN TEN THOUSAND!!
I DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE THE SYSTEM WORKS, BUT IT IS STILL FULLY INSTALLED, AND WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT IN 1999, HAS BEEN SERVICES SINCE THEN, AND IS STILL FULLY INSTALLED AND CONNECTED, SO I WOULD BET IT IS THAT RARE SMALL PLANE WITH AIR !!!
THIS AIRPLANE IS NOT DAMAGED.
IT HAS BEEN SITTING SINCE EARLY IN 2017, WHEN IT TAXIED OFF THE SIDE OF A TAXIWAY AT NIGHT.
THE LEADING EDGE OF THE PROP SUSTAINED TINY LITTLE NICKS, BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT STOP.
THE OWNER AND THE SHOP GOT TO QUARRELING OVER WHAT HAD TO BE DONE TO THE ENGINE, AND AS A RESULT THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID OFF.
TO PROVE THEY COULD BE, THE NICKS WERE FILED OUT, LIKE YOUR A&P/IA DOES EVERY YEAR AT ANNUAL, AND THE PROP IS NICE AND STRAIGHT, AND LOOKS BETTER THAN MOST YOU SEE ON THE FLIGHTLINE!
THE INTERESTING THING IS, THAT THE RULES FOR WHAT THE ENGINE REQUIRES NOW ARE CONTRADICTORY.
ONE INTERPRETATION IS THAT ANY NICK MEANS THE ENGINE HAS SUSTAINED A PROP STRIKE. THIS SEEMS RIDICULOUS, AS THAT MEANS ANY TIME A MECHANIC HAS TO TAKE A FILE TO A PROP, THE ENGINE HAS TO BE INSPECTED.
THE OTHER INTERPRETATION IS THAT IF THE PROPELLOR CAN BE RETURNED TO SERVICE BY SIMPLE FILING, WITHOUT REMOVAL FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND REWORKING BY A PROP SHOP (I.E. WHEN YOUR MECHANIC GETS THE FILE OUT AND CLEANS UP THE LEADING EDGES AT EVERY ANNUAL), THEN THE ENGINE DOES NOT REQUIRE A PROP STRIKE INSPECTION.
THE PROP ON THIS AIRPLANE CLEANED UP NICELY, WITHOUT ANY GOUGES OR DINGS REMAIN.
I AM NOT GOING TO GET INTO THIS DECISION.
I HAVE DISCLAIMED WHAT HAPPENED, AND HAVE SHOWN PHOTOS OF THE PROPELLOR AS IT SITS. YOU CAN DECIDE WHAT TO DO.
THE AIRFRAME TOTAL TIME IS 5740
THE 150 H.P. LYCOMING 0-320 HAS 3104 SFREMAN (ZERO TIMED), 2447 SMOH (1990) AND ONLY 355 HOURS SINCE A COMPLETE (4 CYLINDERS) “TOP” OVERHAUL WITH NEW LYCOMING CYLINDERS!
THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN SITTING SINCE 2017, AND THE ANNUAL HAS EXPIRED (9/1/2017), AND IT SHOULD HAVE A FERRY PERMIT TO FLY HOME TO HAVE THE ANNUAL DONE AT YOUR AIRPORT, WITH YOUR MECHANIC(YOU SHOULD NEVER LET SOMEONE REMOTE FROM YOU DO YOUR ANNUAL).
I PERSONALLY INSPECTED THE AIRPLANE LAST WEEK.
THIS IS WHAT I FOUND:
THE PROP LOOKS GOOD. I SEE NO REASON NOT TO FERRY THIS AIRPLANE!!
I HAVE FLOWN CHEROKEES MY WHOLE LIFE, AND THIS LOOKS FAR BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE, WITH NO ISSUES THAT WOULD PREVENT IT FROM FLYING. IF THE BATTERY WAS UP, I WOULD HAVE BEEN TEMPTED.
THE SPINNER HAS A LITTLE PAINT MISSING, AND ON THE POINT YOU CAN SEE A LITTLE BONDO FROM A PREVIOUS REPAIR. SERVICEABLE AS IS, AND FINE WITH A NORMAL PAINT PREP AND RESPRAY, OR REPLACE IT WITH NEW, THEY ARE AVAILABLE AND NOT THAT EXPENSIVE.
THE AIRFRAME WAS NOT AFFECTED AT ALL, AND HAS NO DAMAGE AT ALL FROM THIS “INCIDENT”. THE ONLY ISSUE I SAW ANYWHERE WAS A TINY DING ON THE LEFT FIBERGLASS WINGTIP WHERE SOMETHING TOUCHED IT. SMALL AND NOT STRUCTURAL, IT WILL BE JUST FINE FOR FLIGHT, AND A MINOR REPAIR.
THE INTERIOR AND THE FRONT SEATS ARE IN VERY NICE CONDITION.
THE DASH IS SUPER CLEAN, WITH ALL LATE STYLE INSTRUMENTATION.
EQUIPPED WITH A KING KLX-135A DIGITAL, 760 CHANNEL LATE MODEL GPS/COMM WITH MOVING MAP, AND A NARCO AT-150 TRANSPONDER WITH MODE “C” ENCODER.
THE WHITE PAINT LOOKS QUITE GOOD ON THE WHOLE AIRPLANE, WHILE THE STRIPES ARE SLIGHTLY FADING IN SPOTS. IF I WERE KEEPING IT, I WOULD HAVE THE STRIPES RESPRAYED (OR EVEN VINYL STRIPED, WHICH IS FAST AND CHEAP) WITH AN UPDATED COLOR (SAY BLACK AND RED) AND THEN ADD A MODERN SWISH OVER THEM IN GOLD. EASY BECAUSE THE EXISTING STRIPES ARE NOT VERY WIDE, AND ARE STRAIGHT, NOT CURVED..
YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING, BUT IF YOU CARE ABOUT APPEARANCES, THIS WOULD BE EASY TO SPARKLE UP!
THE LEFT WINDSHIELD IS SLIGHTLY FOGGY, AND THE RIGHT IS CLEAR BUT HAS SOME CRAZING SHOWING IN THE LOWER. THE SIDE WINDOWS LOOK GOOD.
REPLACING THE WINDSHIELDS IS NOT TERRIBLY HARD, OR EXPENSIVE, BUT THEY ARE NOT BROKEN, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING !!
AND THATS IT!!
NO OTHER ISSUES.
GOOD LOOKING OVERALL, VERY NICE INSIDE, AND A GREAT AIRPLANE TO GET A LICENSE IN !!!
THE BATTERY IS DEAD, AS MIGHT BE EXPECTED AFTER SITTING, SO YOU WOULD NEED TO BRING ONE (35 AMP, 14 VOLT).
