1974 BEECH B24R SIERRA, 200HP RETRACTABLE, NICE PLANE LIGHT DAMAGE, CHEAP !!
THE SIERRA IS BEECHCRAFT"S VERSION OF THE PIPER ARROW, WHICH MEANS THAT IT IS A 4 PLACE, RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR, 200 H.P. FUEL INJECTED AIRPLANE.
UNLIKE THE ARROW, WHICH WAS AN ENTRY LEVEL AIRPLANE, THE SIERRA WAS PRICED HIGHER, AND INCLUDED FEATURES THAT THE ARROW DIDNT OFFER, INCLUDING:
DOORS ON BOTH SIDES !! IMAGINE THAT !!
FULL SIZE ENTRY DOORS ON BOTH THE PILOT"S AND COPILOT"S SIDES, WHICH SEEMS SO EASY AND REASONABLE, BUT WHICH PIPER NEVER OFFERED !! IT MAKES ALL 4 SEATS MUCH EASIER TO ACCESS.
LARGE SIZE BAGGAGE DOOR AS WELL, TWICE THE SIZE OF AN ARROW. THIS LARGE DOOR WAS MEANT AS ACCESS TO THE 2 REAR KIDDIE SEATS.
THATS RIGHT, THIS AIRPLANE WAS MARKETED AS A 6 SEATER !!
LIKE MOST SIERRA OWNERS, THIS ONE DIDNT ORDER THE 2 SMALL REAR SEATS, BUT AS A RESULT OF THE POSSIBILITY, THE LARGE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT AND DOOR ARE GREAT FOR LARGE OR BULKY CARGO !!
VISIBILITY THROUGH THE LARGE, ONE PIECE WINDSHIELD IS FANTASTIC, WITHOUT THAT ANNOYING BAR DOWN THE CENTER LIKE THE ARROW.
CLEAN, WELL LAID OUT CENTER STACK DASH, WITH RAM"S HORN YOKES AND GOOD SWITCHGEAR
THE BEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ARROW AND A SIERRA THOUGH IS THE WAY THEY HAVE BEEN USED !!
WHERE MOST ARROWS HAVE SPENT SOME TIME IN FLIGHT SCHOOL USE, AND OFTEN HAVE 6,7, EVEN 8,000 HOURS OR MORE, MOST SIERRAS, LIKE THIS ONE, WERE PERSONAL AIRPLANES.
THIS AIRPLANE HAS ONLY 3,590 TOTAL TIME.
THE LYCOMING 4 CYLINDER FUEL INJECTED IO-360A1B6 ENGINE IS COUNTERWEIGHTED FOR SMOOTHNESS.
THE ENGINE IN THIS PLANE HAS 1881 HOURS SINCE MAJOR
THIS IS A NICE LOOKING PLANE INSIDE AND OUT !!
ALLOVER WHITE WITH CRISP BLUE AND PEWTER STRIPES OUTSIDE, WITH A VERY NICE TAN AND BROWN TWO-TONE INTERIOR. VERY SHARP !!
THIS AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE WHEN THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED AFTER LANDING, WHILE THE AIRPLANE WAS DOWN, AND TURNING FROM THE RUNWAY ONTO THE TAXIWAY, AT LOW SPEED.
OF COURSE THE ENGINE WAS AT IDLE, BUT ALL 3 OF THE PROP BLADES HIT THE GROUND, SO THE ENGINE REQUIRES AN INSPECTION. WITH THE TIME SO CLOSE TO TBO, IT WOULD MAKE SENSE TO MAJOR THE ENGINE AT A SHOP YOU LIKE, AND HAVE A FRESH ENGINE, WHICH WILL LAST MOST PEOPLE A LIFETIME OF FLYING !! A GREAT INVESTMENT !!
AS THE MAIN GEAR STAYED UP, THE AIRFRAME DAMAGE IS VERY, VERY LIGHT !!
THERE ARE SCRAPES ON THE FIBERGLASS OF THE LOWER COWL, BUT NO CRACKING, SO IT IS EASILY REPAIRABLE, LITTLE MORE THAN SANDING, AND WILL NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.
THE EXHAUST PIPE IS BENT, BUT CAN BE OVERHAULED, NOT REPLACED
THE NOSE GEAR FORK HAS A FEW LIGHT SCRATCHES, BUT WILL SAND SMOOTH, AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OR OVERHAUL.
THE NOSE GEAR WAS DISASSEMBLED, LOOKING FOR THE CAUSE OF THE COLLAPSE, AND IS STILL DISASSEMBLED, AS SHOWN, BUT IT IS NOT BROKEN, AND IN FACT THE ONLY CAUSE THEY COULD FIND WAS SOME LOOSENESS IN ONE OF THE CONNECTIONS
THERE IS A DENT IN THE SPINNER AND A CRACK IN THE DORSAL FIN, BOTH FROM HANDLING WHILE PICKING THE AIRPLANE OFF THE TAXIWAY, BUT THE FUSELAGE AND WINGS WEREN"T DAMAGED DURING THE PROCEDURE !!
THE BALANCE OF THE ENTIRE AIRCRAFT APPEARS UNDAMAGED
NO DAMAGE TO WINGS, CONTROL SURFACES, MAIN GEAR OR GEAR DOORS
NO DAMAGE TO THE BELLY, THIS WAS NOT A GEAR UP LANDING !!
NO DAMAGE TO THE CABIN, GLASS OR WINDSHIELD
NO DAMAGE TO THE FLAPS OR STEPS LIKE THERE WOULD BE IN A GEAR UP !!
NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL OR TAIL FEATHERS
NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE MOUNT
NO DAMAGE TO THE BELLY SKINS OR FIREWALL !!
ALTHOUGH THERE IS SOME PAINT MISSING FROM HANDLING, YOU CAN SEE THAT ALL OF THE LOWER FIREWALL/BELLY RIVITS ARE UNSCRATCHED.
NO SCRAPING OR DENTING AT ALL !!
INSIDE, THE DASH IS VERY CLEAN, WITH THE FULL COMPLIMENT OF LATE MODEL FLIGHT AND ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION
THIS AIRPLANE EVEN HAS A CENTURY 1 WING LEVELER AUTOPILOT !!
THE AVIONICS PANEL UNITS (KX-170B NAV-COMS) HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, BUT THE TRAYS ARE STILL INSTALLED AND WIRED TO THE INCLUDED AUDIO PANEL, WHICH HAS MARKER BEACONS AND BUILT IN INTERCOM, SO YOU COULD INSTALL THE 170B"S NOW OR IN THE FUTURE, OR USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO INSTALL WHAT YOU WANT.
