AT LEAST 140 KNOTS FOR AN UNMODIFIED AIRPLANE, ON 8-8.5 GALLONS PER HOUR, WITH 52 GALLONS ON BOARD! NOW THE EARLY AIRPLANES, FROM 1962 THROUGH 1969 HAVE AN UGLY DASH LAYOUT! EVEN MORE THAN THE ACTUAL CABIN SIZE, THIS “IN YOUR FACE”, HAPHAZARD DASH LAYOUT IS THE BIGGEST NEGATIVE FROM MOST PEOPLE’S PERSPECTIVE. ADD TO THAT THE MANUAL GEAR (YES IT IS A BIG HANDLE YOU HAVE TO MUSCLE INTO PLACE ON THESE EARLY AIRPLANES), HYDRAULIC FLAPS YOU PUMP DOWN AND 1,000 SCREWS TO DISASSEMBLE THE COWLING AND REMOVE THE MULTIPLE PANELS ON THE BELLY FOR ANY MAINTENANCE OR INSPECTION AND I CONSIDER THAT THE EARLY MOONEY IS TOO MUCH TROUBLE! ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN AROUND THE LATER MOONEYS, LIKE THE 201, 231, OR ESPECIALLY THE TLS/BRAVO OR OVATION, KNOW THAT THE DASH LAYOUT WAS FIXED BY 1977 (WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE 201). MOST BUYERS, OR EVEN OLDER MOONEY OWNERS, DON’T REALIZE THAT MANY OF THE IMPROVEMENTS FOUND IN THE 201 DID NOT JUST APPEAR THERE, THEY WERE INCREMENTAL CHANGES THAT WERE FOUND ON ALL OF THE MOONEY MODELS, STARTING YEARS EARLIER AND APPLYING TO ALL MOONEY MODELS, INCLUDING THE “C” THE COWLING, FOR EXAMPLE, WAS IMPROVED SO THAT IT WAS A 1 PIECE UPPER AND 1 PIECE LOWER AND THE 2 PIECES WERE HELD TOGETHER AND TO THE AIRPLANE BY QUICK-TURN FASTENERS, NOT MILLIONS OF SHEET METAL SCREWS! THIS 1975 MODEL AIRPLANE HAS THIS EASY-OFF COWLING, SIMILAR TO THE MODERN AIRPLANES! THE BIGGEST CHANGE IS TO THE DASH, WHICH BY 1975 WAS ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THAT OF THE 2 YEARS LATER 201! EVEN THE M20C GOT THE FACTORY CLEAN DASH, LIKE YOU SEE IN THIS AIRPLANE!! QUADRANT ENGINE CONTROLS, THICK FIGHTER LIKE YOKES, CENTER RADIO STACKS, 6 PACK INSTRUMENT LAYOUT, LIGHTED ROCKER SWITCHES, STRIP ENGINE GUAGES AND RESETTABLE CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN A DEDICATED PANEL!! JUST LIKE A 201! AND ELECTRIC GEAR (NO BIG HANDLE TO CRANK ON). AND ELECTRIC FLAPS! SO ANY 1975 MODEL IS MORE LIKE A 201 INSIDE THAN ANY OLD MOONEY OF ANY MODEL! BUT ANY 1975 MODEL AIRPLANE IS STILL 45 YEARS OLD. UNLESS UPDATES HAVE BEEN DONE, ALL OF THE VERY PLASTICKY TRIM IS CRACKED OR BROKEN. THE SEAT UPHOLSTERY CAN BE FROM FAIR TO BAD. AND THE PAINT AND TRIM IS OFTEN FADED AND WORN SO THIN AS TO BE INVISIBLE. BUT NONE OF THAT DESCRIBES THIS AIRPLANE!! IF YOU CAN’T SEE FOR SURE IN THE PHOTOS, THE PAINT ON THIS AIRPLANE IS NEW AND SHINY AND MODERN AND NICE!! DO YOU SEE THE GLEAM FROM THE LIGHT COMING THROUGH THE HANGER WINDOWS? THIS AIRPLANE SHINES LIKE A NEW PENNY!! THE LOWER IS A VERY BRIGHT RED, WITH BLUE AND DARK RED STRIPES. PAINT WAS APPLIED AFTER A GEAR-UP INCIDENT IN 2017, SO IT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD AND HANGERED SINCE, SO IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OF COURSE THE SIDE WINDOWS AND 1 PIECE WINDSHIELD WERE ALSO RECENTLY REPLACED, SO THE ENTIRE EXTERIOR PRESENTATION IS TOP NOTCH!! REMEMBER I MENTIONED THE 100’S OF SCREWS REQUIRED TO OPEN THE MULTIPLE BELLY PANELS ON ALL MOONEYS UNTIL THE END OF THE 1980’S? THATS WHEN THE FACTORY FINALLY FIGURED OUT A WAY TO REPLACE ALL OF THOSE INDIVIDUAL PANELS AND THIER SCREWS WITH A ONE PIECE FIBERGLASS BELLY, WHICH VERY SIMPLY INSTALLS AND REMOVES WITH ONLY 18 QUICK TURN FASTENERS! THIS MOD ACTUALLY INCREASES CRUISE SPEED SLIGHTLY, BUY IT’S MAJOR ADVANTAGE IS FASTER AND BETTER MAINTENANCE ACCESS. THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE ONE PIECE BELLY MOD INSTALLED! WHEN YOU HAVE AN AIRPLANE THAT LOOKS AS GOOD AS THIS ONE DOES ON THE OUTSIDE, YOU TEND TO SPEND MONEY IN OTHER AREAS AS WELL. LIKE THE CUSTOM, TOP END, ONE OF A KIND INTERIOR!! OH THE SEATS ARE NICE!! THEY ARE A DARK RED SUPER-SOFT ULTRA-LEATHER, SO THEY WILL CARESS YOU WITH THE HAND WHILE WEARING LIKE STEEL. BUT THAT ISN’T THE REALLY CUSTOM PART! IT’S DIFFICULT TO SEE IN THE PHOTOS, BUT THE TAN INSERTS, WHICH LOOK FROM A DISTANCE LIKE CLOTH, ARE ACTUALLY A SMOOTH SUEDE! AND IT’S NOT JUST THE SEATS!! THE SIDE PANELS HAVE BEEN FULLY COVERED IN ULTRA-LEATHER, NO PLASTIC!!! THERE ARE SUEDE INSERTS ON EACH PANEL AND THE ARMRESTS ARE SUEDE COVERED AS WELL!! ALL 4 SEATS HAVE ADJUSTABLE HEADRESTS AND THEY TOO HAVE THAT SWEET SUEDE INSERT! AS IF THAT ISN’T ENOUGH, THERE ARE CUSTOM EMBROIDERED MOONEY MULTI-COLOR LOGOS ON EACH SIDE PANEL, AND A VERY LARGE LOGO ON THE REAR BAGGAGE PANEL!! LIKE I SAID, 1 OF A KIND, SPARED NO EXPENSE! EVEN THE DASH PANEL, WHICH IS PLASTIC EVEN ON THE 201’S AND LATER, WAS COVERED WITH THE SAME DARK RED ULTRA-LEATHER, SMOOTH AND FORM FITTING!! AS ALL 4 SEATBACKS RECLINE, THE UPHOLSTERY EFFECT MAKES IT APPEAR THAT THERE ARE 4 INDIVIDUALLY BOLSTERED BUCKET SEATS, EVEN THOUGH THE M20C, D, E, F AND MOST 201’S AND 231"S HAVE A BENCH REAR SEAT!! NOTICE IN THE INTERIOR SHOT THAT THE EXTRA PAINT FOR ALL EXTERIOR COLORS IS IN CANS IN THE BAGGAGE AREA! IF SOMEONE GOES TO ALL THE WORK AND 10’S OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS REPAINTING AND ADDING A FULL, CUSTOM INTERIOR, YOU MIGHT THINK THEY DID MORE AS WELL! IN THIS CASE, THE MECHANICAL GOT EVEN MORE MONEY SPENT ON IT!! AFTER THE GEAR UP LANDING IN 2017, AT LEAST AN ENGINE INSPECTION WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED. BUT THE SAME GUY THAT WENT OVER THE TOP ON THIS INTERIOR WOULDN’T GO CHEAP OR EASY! THE ENGINE IS A LYCOMING FACTORY REMANUFACTURED REPLACEMENT ENGINE!! NOT JUST MAJOR OVERHAULED, THIS ENGINE IS A ZERO TOTAL TIME REMANUFACTURE!! AND EVEN THAT ISN’T ALL, IT IS A NEWEST STYLE ROLLER ROCKER CAMSHAFT ENGINE, WHICH VIRTUALLY ELIMINATES CAM WEAR! THIS ENGINE CURRENTLY HAS ONLY 168 HOURS TOTAL TIME ON IT!! THE ROLLER ROCKER CAM IS NOT ADVERTISED AS INCREASING HORSEPOWER BY LYCOMING, NOT BECAUSE IT DOESN’T, BUT THEN THEY WOULD HAVE TO GET APPROVAL FROM EACH O.E. AIRPLANE MANUFACTURER TO GET IT LEGALLY INSTALLED. LET’S JUST SAY THAT ANY ROLLER ROCKER CAM IS THE STRONGEST ENGINE OF IT’S TYPE THAT LYCOMING MAKES! BUT THERE IS AN S.T.C. TO ADD MORE POWER TO THIS AIRFRAME!! IT COMES FROM POWERFLOW IN THE FORM OF A COMPLETE STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH TUNED EQUAL LENGTH RUNNERS THAT FULLY AND EVENLY EVACUATE THE EXHAUST FROM EACH CYLINDER SO EFFICIENTLY THAT THEY OFFER A 60 DAY PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE. YOUR NEW SYSTEM, WHICH COSTS $4,850 BY THE WAY, WILL INCREASE CRUISE SPEED BY 5-7 KNOTS, OR DECREASE FUEL BURN BY 10-12% AT YOUR OLD CRUISE SPEED, PLUS OFFER: FASTER RATE OF CLIMB HIGHER SERVICE CEILING MORE EVEN CHT AND EGT LEVELS A SMOOTHER RUNNING ENGINE! THE 3 BLADE HARTZELL PROP HAS THE SAME 168 HOURS AS THE ENGINE, SINCE BRAND NEW, IN 2017!! THIS PROP HAS THE NEWEST STYLE LONG POINTY SPINNER, AND OF COURSE THE NEWEST STYLE NON-AD HUB. WHICH IS UNFORTUNATE, BECAUSE THIS AIRPLANE WAS JUST GEARED UP AGAIN!! YEP, IT APPEARS THAT DESPITE THE HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON FIXING THIS AIRPLANE UP TO BE THE NICEST EXAMPLE OF IT’S TYPE IN THE WORLD, IT STILL REQUIRED THE PILOT TO FLIP THE SWITCH. TO BE FAIR, THE PILOT APPARENTLY DIDN’T COMPLETELY FORGET TO LOWER THE GEAR, HE JUST WAITED UNTIL THE AIRPLANE HAD ALREADY TOUCHED DOWN ON IT’S BELLY BEFORE HE THREW THE SWITCH!! I WASN’T THERE, SO I CAN’T BE SURE, BUT THERE ARE SOME CLUES: THE CIRCUIT BREAKER POPPED WHEN THE GEAR WOULDN’T GO OUT THE MAIN GEAR DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE HAS THE SLIGHTEST SCRAPE ON THE LEADING EDGE, WHICH WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THERE ON A FULL GEAR UP LANDING, THE DOORS TUCK UP TOO HIGH. THE ONLY DAMAGE TO ACTUATING RODS IN THE BELLY IS TO THE TWO LONG RODS THAT WORK THE GEAR, THESE ARE SLIGHTLY BENT, FROM THE PRESSURE BEFORE THE BREAKER POPPED (THE GEAR AND GEAR MOTOR ARE FINE. THE MECHANIC LIFTED THE AIRPLANE ON THE RUNWAY, RESET THE CIRCUIT BREAKER AND HIT THE MASTER SWITCH AND THE GEAR CAME DOWN AND LOCKED)! THE LANDING WAS A GOOD ONE IT SEEMS, AS THERE IS NO WRINKLING IN THE AIRPLANE VISIBLE AS A RESULT. ONLY ONE METAL FAIRING, BETWEEN THE FIBERGLASS BELLY AND THE WING HAS ANY SCRAPING TO IT. ALTHOUGH THE AIRPLANE HAD THE ONE PIECE BELLY MOD, THE PIECE IS MADE OF FIBERGLASS, NOT TITANIUM, SO IT GOT SCRAPED. REPAIRABLE (OF COURSE, IT’S FIBERGLASS) OR REPLACEABLE AND IT INSTALLS IN THE SAME 18 QUICK TURNS. THERE ARE A FEW SUPPORT BRACKETS IN THE BELLY THAT GOT SLIGHTLY SCRAPED OR DEFORMED DUE TO THE WEIGHT OF THE AIRPLANE ON THE LIGHT SHEET METAL. IT SEEMS THAT THEY SHOULD BE REPLACED, BUT IF YOU ARE THINKING OF FERRYING THE AIRPLANE FOR FINAL REPAIR, I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD STRAIGHTEN THESE FLANGES SLIGHTLY AND BE FINE. THE GEAR ACTUATING MOTOR, MOTOR ATTACH POINT AND BALANCE SPRING ASSEMBLY WERE NOT SCRAPED SO THEY WILL NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. THE CONTROL SURFACE ACTUATING RODS AND BELLCRANKS ALSO DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE SUFFERED ANY DAMAGE. THE FLAPS ARE NOT SCRAPED, WHICH OFTEN MEANS THEY WERE NOT EXTENDED FOR LANDING EITHER. THERE IS VERY SLIGHT SCRAPING TO THE OUTBOARD TWO FLAP HANGERS ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THIS LIGHT SCRAPING IS TO THE METAL COVERS IT APPEARS, NOT TO THE STRUCTURAL METAL AND THE FLAP PORTIONS OF THE HINGE ARE NOT SCRAPED OR DAMAGE. THE LEFT HINGES HAVE NO SCRAPING. IT APPEARS THAT THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A CROWN IN THE RUNWAY, AS IN ADDITION TO THE RIGHT FLAP HANGER OUTBOARD SCRAPING, THERE IS SIMILAR LIGHT SCRAPING TO THE OUTBOARD LOWER WING SKIN. THIS SKIN IS ABOUT 1 FOOT WIDE, SO IT CAN BE FULLY REPLACED, OR A PATCH COULD BE INSTALLED, AS IT WOULD ONLY BE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SKIN (NOT NORMALLY VISIBLE. OR MY THOUGHT IS, WHY NOT INSTALL AFTERMARKET UPSWEPT WINGTIPS, LIKE ARE FOUND ON THE 252, OVATION AND TLS/BRAVO. THEY WOULD COVER THIS AREA AND NO DAMAGE WOULD BE VISIBLE AND THIS WOULD BE AN UPGRADE TO THE APPEARANCE AND PERFORMANCE OF THE AIRPLANE AS WELL! THE ONLY OTHER DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME IS TO THE NOSEGEAR DOORS (SCRAPED THROUGH), THE MUFFLER SHROUD ON THE EXHAUST (SMALL FLAT AREA) AND OF COURSE, SINCE THE PROP TIPS ARE BENT, EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS AT IDLE FOR LANDING, THE ENGINE WILL REQUIRE AN INSPECTION. NOT AN OVERHAUL, OF COURSE, WITH ONLY 168 HOURS SINCE REMANUFACTURE IN 2017, THIS ENGINE HAS DECADES AND 1,850 HOURS OF LIFE LEFT TO TBO. ALL 3 TIPS OF THE 3 BLADE CONSTANT SPEED PROP ARE BENT BACK EVENLY AND SCRAPED, SO THE AIRPLANE STAYED SKATING ON IT’S BELLY, IT DID NOT ROCK FORWARD ON THE NOSE WHEN IT STOPPED. IT SEEMS REASONABLE THAT THIS AIRPLANE COULD BE FERRIED TO YOUR CHOICE OF FINAL REPAIR FACILITY WITH A PROP REPLACEMENT AND SOME BELLY TWEAKING. THE HANGER LOCATION, IN MADRAS, OREGON, A 2 HOUR DRIVE FROM PORTLAND (RIGHT PAST MT. HOOD AND WITHIN SIGHT OF MT. ST HELENS), DID NOT DO THE MAINTENANCE ON THE AIRPLANE AND DID NOT DO A REPAIR ESTIMATE. THE AIRPLANE HAD IT’S LAST ANNUAL PERFORMED BY A WELL REGARDED MOONEY SHOP 9/2019, SO IT HAS NOT BEEN SITTING. THIS INCIDENT JUST HAPPENED IN APRIL OF 2020 AND THE AIRPLANE IS TECHNICALLY STILL IN ANNUAL UNTIL THE END OF SEPTEMBER 2020. YOU WILL NOTICE THAT WITH ALL THE MODS AND UPDATES LISTED, I DIDN’T MENTION AVIONICS. THATS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO AVIONICS INCLUDED IN THIS SALE. NONE, NADA. NO TRAYS OR CONNECTORS EITHER.
