1978 CESSNA 172N PROJECT, GREAT 180 H.P. CANDIDATE, CHEAP !!
THIS 172N AIRCRAFT MIGHT BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THAT 180 H.P. 172 CONVERSION DREAM A COST EFFECTIVE REALITY.
MOST OF THE CONVERSIONS I HAVE SEEN HAVE 2 PROBLEMS
1) THEY HAVE STANDARD RANGE FUEL TANKS, WHICH LIMIT THE AIRPLANES RANGE. WITH THE STANDARD 150 OR 160 H.P., THE CLIMB IS SO ANEMIC THAT THERE IS LITTLE INCENTIVE TO CLIMB ABOVE 4,500 FT, AND THE CRUISE SPEED IS SLOW ENOUGH THAT IT IS A DISINCENTIVE TO GO VERY FAR ANYWAY, SO CESSNA PUT PRETTY SMALL STANDARD TANKS ONBOARD
WHEN YOU ADD THE 180 H.P., HOWEVER, YOU INCREASE THE CLIMB RATE, SO YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE 6,500 TO 8,500 RANGE, AND INCREASE THE CRUISE BY 10 OR MORE KNOTS, SO YOU CAN GO FARTHER, AND YOU BURN 1-2 MORE GALLONS PER HOUR, SO YOU USE MORE.
180 H.P. NEEDS LONG RANGE TANKS
THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE RARE, BUT DESIRABLE LONG RANGE TANKS !!
2) 180 H.P. CONVERSION AIRPLANES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE !!
THIS IS SIMPLE MATH. IF YOU START WITH A 172 YOU BUY AT RETAIL, AND THEN ADD THE CONVERSION, YOU ARE REALLY DEEP IN THE AIRPLANE !!
SURE THE 180 H.P. 172 IS NICE, BUT WOULDN"T IT BE NICE IF IT WAS ALSO AFFORDABLE?
THIS AIRPLANE IS A VERY INEXPENSIVE WAY TO GET YOUR 180 HP CONVERSION STARTED
THIS AIRPLANE HAS SOME DAMAGE !!
ON LANDING, THE AIRPLANE GROUND LOOPED, WHICH PUT EXTRA PRESSURE ON THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR.
THIS GEAR LEG IS HELD IN WITH A CLAMP, AND ONE BOLT ON THE END, AND THE BOLT APPARENTLY SHEARED FROM THE STRESS.
THE CLAMP HELD THE LEG IN PLACE, BUT ALLOWED IT TO SWIVEL BACKWARD, UP, BUT AWAY FROM THE FUSELAGE, SO THERE WAS NO DAMAGE SUSTAINED THERE.
NATURALLY, THE AIRPLANE WENT DOWN ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE, AS THE LEFT MAIN GEAR AND THE NOSEGEAR SUFFERED NO DAMAGE, SO THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST ON THE RIGHT WING TIP, AND THE RIGHT HORIZONTAL
THE DAMAGE TO THIS AIRPLANE IS TO THOSE TWO SURFACES
WE HAVE INCLUDED PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGED AREAS. THEY INCLUDE:
RIGHT WING IS WRINKLED AT THE REAR SPAR, IN THE AREA OF THE FLAP MIDPOINT
THE RIGHT FLAP IS BENT MIDSPAN
THE RIGHT PLASTIC TIP IS SCRAPED
THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HORIZONTAL STAB IS WRINKLED
THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR LEG AND FAIRING WERE CUT OFF DURING RECOVERY/TRANSPORTATION
THERE IS NO OTHER KNOWN DAMAGE FROM THIS INCIDENT
THE PROP STRUCK 160 H.P. ENGINE AND DAMAGED PROPELLOR WERE REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE. THE UNDAMAGED ENGINE MOUNT (WHICH FITS 160 AND 180 H.P.), AS WELL AS THE FIREWALL(UNDAMAGED) AND ALL FIREWALL MOUNTED ACCESSORIES ARE INSTALLED AND INCLUDED.
AS THE NOSEGEAR DID NOT COLLAPSE, THE COWLINGS WERE NOT IMPACTED, AND THESE FIT 160 OR 180 H.P. AS WELL.
THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, DOORS, CABIN TOP OR TAILCONE, BUT OF COURSE YOU WILL WANT TO INSPECT THE RIGHT GEAR ATTACH POINT WHEN YOU REPLACE THE GEAR.
SPEAKING OF GEAR, THE NOSE AND LEFT MAIN ARE UNDAMAGED, AND THE WHEEL AND BRAKE ASSEMBLY ON THE RIGHT IS GOOD AS WELL.
