THIS AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE ON LANDING AT THE EASTHAMPTON AIRPORT, IN THE HAMPTONS, LONG ISLAND, N.Y.
(YES, IT"S THAT KIND OF A NICE AIRPLANE)
THE LEFT LANDING GEAR FOLDED IN ON LANDING ROLL-OUT, FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON, WHICH IS NOT OBVIOUS ON QUICK INSPECTION.
THERE IS NO VISIBLE DAMAGE TO THE LEFT GEAR !!!
AS IT WAS RETRACTING, THE LEFT INBOARD GEAR DOOR WAS SCRAPING, AND THE GEAR EVENTUALLY PUSHED THE DOOR UP, INTO THE WELL, INSTEAD OF THE DOOR CLOSING OVER THE GEAR AS INTENDED. THIS LEFT INBOARD DOOR IS DESTROYED, BUT NO ADDITIONAL DAMGE TO THE GEAR WELL OR WING IS OBVIOUS IN THIS AREA.
AS THE LEFT BOLT-ON WINGTIP WAS ALLOWED TO DRAG ON THE RUNWAY, THERE IS SCRAPING TO THE TIP, AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF SCRAPING, VERY SMALL, TO THE SKIN OF THE WING JUST INBOARD OF THE BOLT-ON TIP
THE NACELLES, THE LOWER WING, THE EXHAUST AND THE COWL FLAP ARE UNDAMAGED, AND OF COURSE THERE IS NO SPAR BENDING FROM THIS LOW SPEED INCIDENT !!
THE PULL TO THE LEFT BROUGHT THE AIRCRAFT OFF OF THE RUNWAY AND ONTO THE GRASS, WHERE THE NOSE GEAR FOLDED UP.
THE ENERGY WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY GONE BY THIS TIME, SO THE DAMAGE TO THE NOSE IS THE LIGHTEST I HAVE EVER SEEN IN AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS. IT"S ALMOST LIKE THE NOSE WENT DOWN ON A PILLOW !!
THERE IS A VERY FAINT SET OF SCRATCHES ON THE FIBERGLASS NOSE CONE, BUT THEY ARE VERY FAINT, AND THE CONE WILL NOT REQUIRE ANY REPAIR. YOU COULD BUFF IT OUT, OR FINISH SAND AND REPAINT ONLY THE BOTTOM SECTION, AND NO ONE WOULD EVER KNOW !!
THE NOSE GEAR DOORS ARE SIMILARLY BARELY SCRATCHED, AND THEY TOO WILL NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT !!
THE LEFT PITOT TUBE IS MISSING, BUT THE MOUNTING AREA IS NOT DEFORMED, SO A REPLACEMENT WILL BOLT RIGHT IN.
THE RIGHT PITOT IS UNDAMAGED
THE EXHAUST TUBE FOR THE NOSE MOUNTED CABIN HEATER IS SLIGHTLY DEFORMED AT THE BOTTOM, AND A WATER DRAIN TUBE IS ALSO DAMAGED
THE CABIN HEATER ITSELF IS NOT DAMAGED
THERE IS NO DAMAGE OR SCRAPING OR DENTING TO THE NOSE AREA, NOSE GEAR WELL OR CABIN BELLY AT ALL !!!!
LIKE IT LANDED ON PILLOWS !!
THERE IS A COMM ANTENNA FRTHER BACK ON THE BELLY THAT IS DAMAGED, BUT EVEN THE MOUNTING AREA FOR THAT IS UNDAMAGED !!
NO OTHER BELLY DAMAGE !!
THE LEFT 3 BLADE PROP IS DAMAGED ON ALL 3 BLADES NATURALLY. THIS IO-520CB (8) ENGINE HAS 773 SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL
THE RIGHT PROP ALSO HAS 3 DAMAGED BLADES, BECAUSE OF THE NOSE GEAR SLOWLY COLLAPSING, BUT THESE BLADES ARE ONLY BENT AT THE TIPS (ENGINES WERE BASICALLY STOPPED BY THEN, AND THE ANGLE JUST BARELY LET THEM TOUCH
THE RIGHT IO-520CB(8) ENGINE HAS 1134 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL ( 1,800 RECOMMENDED TBO)
THE AIRFRAME ITSELF HAS A SUPER LOW 2,394 SINCE NEW TOTAL TIME !!
LAST ANNUAL WAS 3/7/2015, SO THIS AIRPLANE IS STILL IN CALENDAR ANNUAL FOR THE NEXT 9 MONTHS !!!!
I"M SURE THAT YOU ARE WONDERING HOW I ACQUIRED SUCH A NICE AIRPLANE WITH SO LITTLE DAMAGE?
WELL IT IS THE RECOVERY THAT ENTERS IN THERE !!
IN THIER HASTE TO LIFT THE AIRPLANE AND GET IT BACK ON IT"S GEAR, THE AIRPORT CALLED IN A CRANE.
APPARENTLY THERE ARE NO MECHANICS BASED ON THE FIELD, AND THE AIRPORT EMPLOYEES AND THE CRANE OPERATOR COMBINED DIDN"T UNDERSTAND THE PROPER PROCEDURE, BECAUSE THEY CHOSE TO LIFT THE AIRPLANE WITH STRAPS RUN UNDER THE WINGS ON BOTH SIDES, IN FRONT OF THE FLAPS.
I SUPPOSE THAT MAKES SINCE TO A GUY WHO NORMALLY LIFTS TRUSSES FOR HOUSES, BUT AIRPLANES ARE NOT BUILT THAT WAY.
BOTH WING LEADING EDGES, INBOARD OF THE NACELLES, AND BOTH WING TRAILING EDGES, RIGHT NEAR THE FUSELAGE, GOT BENT !!
HOW STUPID !!
WELL, AFTER THEY LIFTED IT AND PULLED THE GEAR OUT, THE BLAME GAME STARTED
SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE AIRPLANE OWNERS INSURANCE GOT INVOLVED, AND IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE AIRPLANE WOULD BE SOLD AS-IS, RATHER THAN REPAIRED, BECAUSE THE FORMER OWNERS WERE SO PISSED OFF !!
THERE ARE SOME SILVER LININGS HERE:
THIS IS A VERY NICE AIRPLANE, AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED, AND WOULD HAVE BEEN, IF NOT FOR THE LIABILITY ISSUES OF THOSE THAT DID THE EXTRA DAMAGE
THE LEADING EDGE AREAS BETWEEN THE NACELLES ON BARON WINGS HAVE A REMOVABLE PANEL, WHICH SIMPLY SCREWS ON.
THIS IS TO MAKE IT EASY TO RUN AND ACCESS THE ENGINE CONTROL CABLES AND WIRING FOR SERVICE.
THESE ARE THE PANELS THAT ARE DAMAGED ON THE LEADING EDGES.
THEY SIMPLY BOLT ON !!!!!!!!!!!
THE REAR SKINS ARE A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED, AS THEY ARE PART OF THE RIVETED ON SKINS, BUT MOST OF IT WILL STRAIGHTEN OUT, AND A SMALL PATCH WOULD BE THE MOST YOU MIGHT NEED.
SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY, THE RIGHT FLAP GOT BENT FROM UNDERNEATH, PRESUMABLY DURING THE RECOVERY, AS THE RIGHT GEAR NEVER COLLAPSED, AND THE RIGHT GEAR DOORS, INBOARD AND OUT ARE PERFECT. MORE HAM-FISTED HANDLING.
THERE IS NO OTHER KNOWN DAMAGE !!
THE NOSE GEAR IS STIFF-LEGGED FOR SAFETY, BUT THE MAINS ARE STANDING OUT FINE ON THIER OWN.
NO OTHER DAMAGE TO WINGS, FUSELAGE, OR TAIL
INSIDE, THIS AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE TOP OF THE LINE KING KFC-200 AUTOPILOT SYSTEM, WHICH HAS ALTITUDE HOLD, WING LEVELING, HEADING HOLD, VOR/LOC COUPLING, GLIDESLOPE COUPLING, AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC TRIM AND MANUAL ELECTRIC PITCH TRIM. THE BEST AUTOPILOT FOR THIS AIRPLANE !!
