THE DAKOTA IS THE ULTIMATE VERSION OF PIPER"S 4 SEAT CHEROKEE LINE !!
THE SAME STRETCHED CABIN AS THE ARCHER, SO IT HAS PLENTY OF ROOM FOR 4 PEOPLE, WITH 4 INDIVIDUAL COMFORTABLE BUCKET SEATS, A REAR BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT WITH PACKAGE SHELF THAT IS ACCESSIBLE FROM INSIDE WHILE FLYING AND FROM OUTSIDE WITH A LARGE DOOR.
THE CABIN ENTRY DOOR IS ALSO LARGER, FOR EASY ACCESS TO THE REAR SEATS WITH EXTRA LEGROOM
THE DAKOTA ALSO SHARES THE BASIC WING DESIGN, THE SEMI-TAPERED WING, WHICH INCREASES TOP SPEED AND GIVES A SMOOTHER RIDE IN CHOP AND A MORE CONTROLLED DESCENT AND FLARE THAN THE OLD CHEROKEE WING.
WHERE THE DAKOTA DISTANCES ITSELF FROM THE ARCHER IS UP FRONT, WHERE THE WORKMANLIKE 180 H.P. 4 CYLINDER IS REPLACED WITH A FIRE BREATHING 6 CYLINDER PUTTING OUT 235 H.P. !! ACTUALLY, THIS ISN"T REALLY A FIRE BREATHING ENGINE, I JUST SAID THAT FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT. IT DOES PUT OUT 235 HORSEPOWER, WHICH IS OVER 30% MORE THAN THE ARCHER"S 180 H.P., BUT THE 235 ENGINE IS UNDER-STRESSED, AND THIS SAME SIZE ENGINE HAS BEEN MADE TO PRODUCE 250 AND EVEN 260 H.P. WITH A COMPRESSION BUMP AND HIGHER RPM, SO IN IT"S 235 FORM IT IS BUILT FOR LONG TERM ENDURANCE, AND WILL GO BEYOND TBO WITHOUT BATTING AN EYE.
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE 235 H.P. ENGINE IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS DAMAGED AIRFRAME IN THIS AUCTION. WHEN THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED DAMAGE, SO DID THE ENGINE, AND AFTER THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED, THE OWNER DECIDED TO SELL THE AIRFRAME ALONE.
SPEAKING OF FORMER OWNERS, THIS AIRPLANE HAS HAD ONLY 2. THE FIRST OWNER FOR THE FIRST 4 YEARS, AND ONE FAMILY FOR ALL OF THE OVER 30 YEARS SINCE !!

YOU WILL NOTICE THE NICE GATHERED LEATHER INTERIOR IN A MODERN NEUTRAL TONE, AND THE SUPER CLEAN WHITE PAINTED DASH.
THIS AIRPLANE WAS WELL CARED FOR.
BUT, THERE WAS AN INCIDENT.
THE HOME STRIP IS LIGHTED AT THE CORNERS, BUT THE LIGHTS ON ONE SIDE WERE OUT, MESSED WITH BY VANDALS (KIDS PARTYING) WHEN THE AIRPLANE OWNER LEFT FOR OSHKOSH THIS SUMMER.
ON LANDING AFTER DARK, HE STAYED CLOSE TO THE LIGHTED SIDE, BUT GOT A LITTLE TO CLOSE TO THE MATURING CORN, AND CAUGHT THE LEFT WING ON THE CORN (HENCE THE LEADING EDGE DAMAGE OUTBOARD OF THE TANK)
THIS PULLED HIM AROUND INTO THE CORN, WHERE THE NOSE GEAR BROKE OFF AT THE CHROME (THE UPPER STILL LOOKS GOOD, AS DOES THE FORK AND WHEEL), WHICH WENT UNDER THE LEFT FLAP AND BENT IT UP.
AS THE AIRPLANE CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP, IT LIFTED UP AND PUT WEIGHT ON THE RIGHT WING, WHICH BENT THAT WING MIDSPAN (BOTH MAIN AND REAR SPARS) AND SLIGHTLY KINKED THE RIGHT AILERON.
SO THERE YOU SEE IT.
STILL TIED DOWN AT THE HOME STRIP OUTSIDE FRASCA, IL.
THE LOWER FIBERGLASS COWLING IS SCRAPED UP SEVERELY, THE UPPER IS FINE
THE FUSELAGE APPEARS STRAIGHT FROM FIREWALL (GOOD) ALL THE WAY BACK, WITH 2 CAVEATS:
THERE IS A VERY SLIGHT DEFORMATION OF THE SIDE SKIN BEHIND THE FIREWALL ON THE RIGHT SIDE. I CANNOT SAY THAT IT IS FROM THIS INCIDENT, AS IT IS SO LIGHT AS TO BE EASILY MISSED, BUT I SAW SOMETHING I THINK
THE FUSELAGE ON THE LEFT SIDE, AT THE SMALL REAR WING ATTACH POINT (NOT THE MAIN SPAR) APPEARS TO HAVE A FAINT WRINKLE.
THAT"S IT !!
OTHERWISE, WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET !!
THE FUEL TANKS ON THE DAKOTA ARE EXTRA CAPACITY FOR LONG RANGE. THEY ARE NOT DAMAGED
THE MAIN GEAR IS GOOD, BUT THE "FAT" WHEELPANTS ALL HAVE AT LEAST SOME DAMAGE
THE TIP ON THE LEFT WING IS CRACKED UP, BUT THE STROBES ARE OK
THE TAILCONE AND TAIL FEATHERS ARE ALL UNDAMAGED
THE DASH IS COMPLETE WITH ALL 6 PACK INSTRUMENTS AND ENGINE/AIRFRAME INSTRUMENTATION, INCLUDING A DG WITH HEADING BUG.
AVIONICS INSTALLED INCLUDE KING AUDIO PANEL WITH MARKERS AND A 4 PLACE SIGTRONICS INTERCOM. TRAYS AND WIRING ALSO INCLUDED FOR A KING FLAT-PACK COMM AND KNS-80 RNAV/DME AND KING TRANSPONDER WITH ENCODER
SOLD WITH LOGBOOKS BACK TO DAY ONE IN OCTOBER 1978, WHEN THIS AIRPLANE WAS GRANTED IT"S ORIGINAL AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE !!
