If you ever wanted a Warrior project, this is it. This is my 1982 Piper Warrior that I was rebuilding from an incident. This airplane was the pride and joy of an A&P, who had recently given it a repaint and a fresh engine with flow matched cylinders. Unfortunately, he let a newly minted PPL pilot use it; a pilot who had trained in Cessna 172s and didn"t have much experience with low wing aircraft. Well, there"s definitely a bit of difference between high wing and low wing GA aircraft when it comes to ground effect. Coming in a little hot, he floated down the runway. Yes, this would have been an excellent time for a go around but you"ve heard what often happens when trying to salvage a bad approach. That float down the runway turned into a drift with a bit of crosswind, so much drift that he wandered off near the trees. BAM, the right wing hit a tree and swung him 90 degrees. Then, BAM, the left wing struck a tree and swung the aircraft 90 degrees to the left. If he had intended to parallel park this Warrior in the woods,, he could have not done a better job. Yes, the wings were severely damaged.... but no prop strike! The engine stopped turning due to lack of fuel from the breeched wing tank, not because the propeller suffered a stoppage.
I accumulated the parts needed to rebuild this Warrior into my dream machine, my Ultimate Warrior. I was going to put in a GPS to work with the autopilot already installed and make it into a cross country machine. Then, on top of running out of time for this project, I fell in love with an old twin and lost my mind. I now bomb around the country in a 310 at the same speed and just a little more carrying capacity, but twice the fuel burn and four times the maintenance. It doesn"t make sense, but that"s what I"m doing.
I"ve done a lot of work already. The horizontal, vertical, and fuselage have been stripped of paint. Ive accumulated the other parts needed, like replacement wings and new skins. The 1982 Warrior was the most desirable, as it came with the battery mounted on the firewall instead of under the rear seat. You can get an STC to convert other years to this configuration so that you can enjoy the increased gross weight, but the 1982 is already there for no extra expense. The replacement fuselage is a 1978 (will traceability through FAA records) and one of the new skins fits the aft section to move the external power jack away from there and up front for the firewall mounted battery configuration of the 1982.
An aileron will need a new skin (included) and one wing needs a new outboard leading edge (easily fabricated per the maintenance manual, which calls out which material to use and how to fabricate it).
The 160HP Lycoming O-320-D3G engine is less than 260 SMOH (going by logbook which last recorded 214.5 SMOH and the current Hobbs). Cylinders were purchased new and then flow balanced by Mena Aircraft Engines at extra expense. This engine was a smooth, powerful runner before the airframe was damaged. The overhaul paperwork includes all work orders and parts receipts.
All instruments are included as pictured (altimeter is out of the panel, but will be included), but not a radio or transponder (pick your own for ADS-B 2020 compliance). There"s also a Century autopilot installed, as well as a carb ice detector and intercom.
The aircraft also includes articulating seats and dual toe brakes.
Of course, the logbooks are complete back to this Warriors "birth" and the airworthiness certificate is there.
Many duplicate parts, that you can sell if you don"t want them. I"ve also built "shop gear" in order to be able to roll the project around easily, which you can sell when done with them.
I did have a couple of things disappear from the project (or at least I can"t find them). The engine mags have been replaced with cores, since they seem to have walked off. Also, I can"t find the lower aluminum engine cowl (left and right pieces). I will keep looking, but I"m afraid those were carried off with some other aluminum, most likely by a meth head I would have happily given $20 to, instead of him stealing $400 worth of aluminum for which he likely got two bucks.
Delivery is possible, although pickup is preferred. My daughter isn"t doing much this summer as she prepares to leave for college, so she can likely drive the project to you for cheap.
Ask any questions you have. Pictures on this eBay listing include logbook entries, but additional paperwork is available. I know I could part it for more and am losing money on it at the opening price (not even counting my labor), but I sure hope someone wants to finish this aircraft to have as their pride and joy.
