IT SEEMS THAT A WHOLE GROUP OF FORMER TWIN OWNERS HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THE ROCKET GOES FASTER THAN THE 310"S AND BARONS THEY USED TO FLY, BUT ON 1/2 THE GAS, AND WITH ALMOST HALF THE UPKEEP!!
BUT BECAUSE THE "ROCKET" IS A CONVERSION OF A 1970"S OR 1980"S AIRPLANE, EXTERIOR UPDATES, INTERIOR UPGRADES, AND ESPECIALLY AVIONICS VERY GREATLY ON THESE AIRPLANES.

THIS IS FRESH WATER HERE, FROM THE TORRENTIAL RAINS, NOT STORM SURGE FROM THE OCEAN LIKE WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FLORIDA KEYS !!
THIS IS THE 3RD AIRPLANE I HAVE BOUGHT FROM WEST HOUSTON. BOTH OF THE OTHER TWO WERE LEFT INTACT BY THE INSURANCE COMPANIES WHO HANDLED THE CLAIMS. I HAVE ALREADY SOLD BOTH, ONE, A MOONEY WHICH HAD THE WHEELS AND BRAKES CLEANED UP IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE STORM, WAS FLOWN OUT WITHOUT ANY PARTS REPLACEMENT !!
THE OTHER, A BELLANCA, WAS BOUGHT BACK BY THE MECHANIC FAMILIAR WITH THE PLANE, AND HE CLEANED UP THE WHEELS AND BRAKES, GREASED THE BEARINGS, AND IS FLYING AGAIN.
THE INSURANCE COMPANY ON THIS AIRPLANE WAS MORE CONCERNED, SO THEY HAD THE AIRPLANE PARTIALLY DISASSEMBLED AND TRUCKED OUT TO A STORAGE FACILITY.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH TRANSPORTING A DISASSEMBLED MOONEY, THERE ARE TWO ACCEPTABLE METHODS:
REMOVE THE ENGINE AND THE TUBULAR ENGINE MOUNT, AND UNRIVET THE TAILCONE FROM BEHIND THE CABIN. THIS ALLOWS THE AIRPLANE TO BE TRANSPORTED SIDEWAYS ON A LONG TRAILER, WITHOUT BEING OVER WIDE. THIS METHOD LEAVES THE LANDING GEAR INTACT AND DOWN, SO THE AIRFRAME STANDS ON THE TIRES, AS IT SHOULD, SO NO HARM COMES TO THE FRAGILE BELLY, AND ALL OF THE DOZENS OF PUSH-PULL RODS AND BELL-CRANKS IN THE BELLY CAN STAY INTACT. FOR AN EXPERIENCED RETRIEVAL CREW, ON A NICE AIRPLANE, THIS IS THE PREFERRED METHOD, BECAUSE IT PROTECTS THE PAINT AND SOFT SKINS FROM BENDING AND SCRAPINGREMOVE THE WING (ONE PIECE FROM WINGTIP TO WINGTIP ) FROM UNDER THE FUSELAGE. ALTHOUGH SIMPLER TO DO, THIS WAY CREATES A LOT MORE WORK IF THE AIRPLANE IS REASSEMBLED, AS SO MUCH STUFF, INSIDE, OUTSIDE AND ALL THAT STUFF IN THE BELLY, HAVE TO BE REINSTALLED.DEMATING THE WING ALSO LEAVES THE FRAGILE AND UNSUPPORTED BELLY STRINGERS AND FAIRINGS EXPOSED AND OFTEN BENT, DISRUPTS THE INTERIOR, AND CREATES A MESS.THE CREW THAT DISASSEMBLED THIS AIRPLANE IS THE MOST EXPERIENCED IN TEXAS, AND ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED IN THE COUNTRY!
THEY USED THE FIRST METHOD, AND DID IT RIGHT, WHICH WILL MAKE REASSEMBLY OF THIS AIRPLANE MUCH EASIER !! TRANSPORTABLE ON A 34-36" TRAILER.
HERE"S WHAT I OBSERVED YESTERDAY, WHEN I CHECKED THE AIRPLANE OUT IN ONE OF THE RENTAL HANGERS WE KEEP SOUTH OF DALLAS:
THE PAINT, IN A MODERN MAROON, IN A MODERN SCHEME, IS EXCELLENT, AND THE RECOVERY TEAM TOOK EXTRA CARE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY!
THE GLASS AND WINDSHIELDS ARE GOOD, AND WERE NOT SCRATCHED DURING RETRIEVAL OR TRANSPORT.
THE LIGHT TAN LEATHER INTERIOR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, WITH MODERN BOLSTERS AND TWO-TONE INSERTS ON THE SIDE PANELS! HIGH HEADRESTS ON ALL 4 SEATS. CARPET LOOKS OK, BUT THE AFT PORTION MAY? HAVE GOTTON WET. IT DOESNT REALLY LLOK IT.
THE HEADLINER AND SIDE PANEL PIECES AND TRIM THAT WERE REQUIRED TO BE REMOVED, AS WELL AS THE PERFECT REAR SEATS, WERE ALL SHRINK WRAPPED TO KEEP THEM PERFECT.
HARDWARE, BRACKETS, HOSES, ETC., ETC. THAT WERE REMOVED WERE EITHER PUT IN ZIPLOCK BAGS OR SHRINK-WRAPPED.
THE OPEN REAR OF THE CABIN WAS ALSO WRAPPED IN FILM TO PROTECT THE CONTENTS DURING TRANSPORTATION.(I JUST TOOK ONE SECTION OFF TO REMOVE AND PHOTOGRAPH THE PECES THAT HAD BEEN STORED INSIDE.)
THERE IS SOME FINE SILT ON THE LOWER LANDING GEAR, AND DEFINITE WATER/SILT MARKS ON THE MAIN GEAR DOORS (SHOWN IN MY PHOTOS)
THESE MARKS WOULD INDICATE THAT THE AFT TAILCONE LOWER, WHICH SITS LOWER THEN THE BELLY UP FRONT, WAS PROBABLY IN THE WATER, BUT NOT AS HIGH AS THE TAIL FEATHERS.
THE LOWER WING INBOARD ALSO SITS THAT LOW, BUT AGAIN, THE LINES DO NOT INDICATE WATER ABOVE THE WING, BUT BELOW, AND ONLY INBOARD.
THE LOWEST PART OF THE TAILCONE IS THE THICK PART RIGHT BEHIND THE CABIN. AFTER THAT AREA, THE TAILCONE THINS, AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MOSTLY BACK OUT OF THE WATER.
SURE ENOUGH, RIGHT IN THAT THICK PART OF THE TAILCONE, REALLY LOW, SITS THE ELECTRIC FLAP MOTOR. THE JACKSCREW, WHICH IS WHAT THE MOTOR ACTUATES, WORKS SMOOTHLY, AND SHOWS NO CORROSION, BUT THE POT METAL MOTOR HOUSING HAS SOME POWDERY RESIDUE, AND THE 2 PLUG IN CONNECTIONS LOOK SLIGHTLY POWDERY AS WELL, SO I"M SAYING THEY MAY HAVE BEEN WET.
THE AFT AVIONICS TRAY IS ELEVATED ABOVE THE FLAP MOTOR LEVEL, AND THE CONNECTIONS ON THESE BOXES, AND THE BOXES THEMSELVES, DO NOT SEEM TO SHOW SILT OR CORROSION, SO I"M EXPECTING THEM TO CHECK OUT OK.
THERE ARE A FEW TUBES IN THE BELLY, SOME OF THE LONG ACTUATORS AND SOME IN THE TUBULAR BELL-CRANKS, THAT HAVE LIGHT RUST SHOWING ON THEM, AND MANY OTHERS THAT DO NOT. THIS IS AT THE POINT OF BEING COSMETIC AT THIS TIME, NOT STRUCTURAL, AND APPEARS TO BE BASED ON THE CONDITION OF THE PAINT ON EACH PIECE (GOOD PAINT, NO RUST, AND MISSING OR CHIPPED PAINT, MORE RUST. IT IS MY OPINION THAT NONE OF THESE TUBES OR BELLCRANKS WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT!! I WOULD GO THROUGH AND REMOVE ANY THAT SHOW RUST STARTING AND SAND AND REFINISH IT. THE ROD ENDS ARE GREASED, SO JUST LIKE THE FLAP JACKSCREW, NO CORROSION IS EVIDENT ON ANY OF THEM.
I HAVE ANOTHER 231, (NOT A ROCKET) ALSO 1981, AND COINCIDENTALLY ALSO IN THE DALLAS AREA, WITH WING DAMAGE, AND MY ORIGINAL IDEA WHEN I BOUGHT THE ROCKET WAS TO OFFER THE OTHER 231 AS A PARTS AIRPLANE, BUT, AFTER SEEING THE ROCKET, I REALIZE THIS WON"T BE REQUIRED. YOU WOULDN"T NEED THAT STUFF (ALTHOUGH SOMEONE MIGHT WANT THE S-TEC 55X SYSTEM, WHICH IS UNDAMAGED).
THIS IS A CLEAN UP AND REASSEMBLE JOB, NOT A WHOLESALE PARTS REPLACEMENT.
THE TURBO SITS LOW ON THE ENGINE, AND ALTHOUGH IT DOESN"T APPEAR THAT IT GOT WET, AND I THINK EVERYTHING FIREWALL FORWARD STAYED ABOVE THE WATER (THE LOWER COWL SHOWS NO OBVIOUS SILT OR DEBRIS) IT SHOULD BE CHECKED.
THE BALANCE OF THE ENGINE IS NO QUESTION ABOVE THE WATER, AS IS THE 3 BLADE PROP HUB. THE BLADE THAT WAS DOWN PROBABLY GOT WET, BUT NOT WETTER THAN IT DOES WHEN FLYING THROUGH THE RAIN, AND ALL 3 SHOW NO DAMAGE.
THE TSIO-520NB ENGINE HAS 1098 SMOH IN 2008, WITH A NEW CRANK AND NEW CYLINDERS.
THE MCCAULEY 3 BLADE FULL FEATHERING PROPELLOR HAS 1098 SINCE NEW IN 2007
