1986 MOONEY M20J “201”, 3,140 TT, STRAIGHT AIRFRAME WITH NO DAMAGE AND GOOD PAPERWORK, CHEAP!!WHAT A GREAT PROJECT!!THE 201 IS THE BEST ALL AROUND, BALANCED SINGLE ENGINED PRODUCTION AIRPLANE AVAILABLE!!TRUE 4 PLACE, WITH ROOM FOR EVERYONES FEET AND A GENEROUS BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT.64 GALLONS OF FUEL, FOR TRUE “ACROSS THE COUNTRY” CROSS COUNTRIES.FANTASTIC AERODYNAMICS GIVE IT MORE SPEED PER HORSEPOWER THAN ANY OTHER PRODUCTION AIRPLANE!!AND THE LOOK FANTASTIC !! SLEEK AND MAYBE EVEN SEXY!THE “201” MONIKER WAS APPLIED TO THE M20J AS A MARKITING PLOY, AS YOU CAN’T REALLY MAKE A NORMAL UNIT OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE CRUISE THAT FAST. FIGURE ON 180 MPH ON THE 1970’S AIRPLANES, BUT TWEAKS TO THE FAIRINGS AND GEAR DOORS ON SUBSEQUENT MODELS MAKE THE MID 1980’S UNITS LIKE THIS ONE ALMOST 10 MPH FASTER!THIS AIRCRAFT HAS ONLY 3,140 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW, WHICH IS LOW, EVEN FOR A 1986 AIRFRAME.IT ALSO HAS AN INTERESTING STORY.WELL MAINTAINED, WITH GOOD LOG ENTRIES SINCE NEW AND GOOD EQUIPMENT, THE AIRPLANE WAS IN A SHOP IN NEW JERSEY FOR AN EXTENSIVE REWORK, WHICH WAS TO INCLUDE ASPEN DISPLAYS, AN EDM 930 AND NEW PAINT, WHEN THE FOAM OVERHEAD FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM WENT OFF IN THE BIG MAINTENANCE HANGER THE AIRPLANE WAS LOCATED IN.THE STORY IS THAT THE AIRPLANES INSIDE, INCLUDING THIS AIRPLANE, WAS SPRAYED WITH FOAM, WHICH CAN BE CORROSIVE, SO THE LAWYER FOR THE OWNER DEMANDED THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOR THE SHOP BUY IT FROM HIM.THE FUNNY THING IS THAT THE PICTURE WE HAVE OF THIS AIRPLANE AFTER THE FOAM WAS SHUT OFF SHOWS IT IN THE FAR BACK CORNER OF THE HANGER, WITH FOAM SPREAD ON THE HANGER FLOOR, BUT NONE ON THIS AIRPLANE, OR THE OPEN TOOLBOX BESIDE IT, OR THE BENCH BEHIND IT, ETC.,ETC.SO THIS APPEARS THAT THE MOONEY OWNER HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SELL THE AIRPLANE TO THE SHOP INSURANCE COMPANY AT A GOOD PRICE DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF A PROBLEM, AND TOOK IT.YOU AND I MIGHT TOO!SO WHEN THE SHOP’S INSURANCE IS DECIDING ON WHAT TO DO, THE AIRPLANE GETS PUT INTO THE OWNERS HANGER.LATER, IT GETS PUT OUTSIDE, AND EVEN LATER, THEY SELL IT TO ME.SO THE FOAM INCIDENT HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF 2017. ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO.THE PHOTOS YOU SEE HERE WERE TAKEN BY US LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AGO!THERE IS NO CORROSION ISSUE!!NO ILL EFFECTS AT ALL!THERE IS LEADING EDGE PAINT EROSION ON THE LEADING EDGES OF THE VERTICAL FIN AND WINGS, CHIPS AROUND THE GAS CAPS AND WINDSHIELD, ETC. WHICH IS WHY THE OWNER HAD IT IN FOR PAINT IN 2017!!NO CORROSION ISSUES EVEN IN THESE AREAS NOT WELL COVERED BY PAINT!!NO CORROSION ISSUES THAT WE COULD FIND ON THE AIRPLANE!!INSIDE, THERE IS A HAZE OF SURFACE RUST ON A FEW AREAS OF THE STEEL ROLLCAGE WHERE UPHOLSTRY AND INSULATION WAS TOUCHING IT. NOT AN ISSUE, AND YOU WOULD NEVER SEE IT UNLESS YOU PULL THE WHOLE INTERIOR, LIKE THEY DID!THE WHEELS WERE A CONCERN, BECAUSE THE FOAM WAS ON THE FLOOR, BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY SHOW NO CORROSION EITHER!THE RUST ON THE NOSE TRUNION IS WHERE THE PAINT RUBS OFF WHEN YOU PUT THE TOWBAR IN THERE. MY 1992 MOONEY HAS TO BE TOUCHED UP THERE EVERY FEW YEARS OR IT WILL START TO SURFACE RUST AS WELL!THE RUSTIEST THING WE FOUND IS THE DOOR STAY OR SLIDE, WHICH HOLDS THE DOOR OPEN. I WILL INCLUDE A REPLACEMENT FROM OUR STOCK AT NO CHARGE TO THE BUYER!THERE WAS ALSO A CONCERN ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF CORROSION ON THE ENGINE, WHICH WE DIDN’T FIND. RATHER THAN ALLOW CONCERN ABOUT THE ENGINE/PROP TO NEGATIVELY INFLUENCE THE VALUE OF THIS AIRFRAME, WE ARE SELLING THE AIRFRAME MINUS THE ENGINE AND ALL ACCESSORIES FORWARD OF THE UNDMAGED MOUNT!!THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE AIRFRAME ONLY!INSIDE, THE SEATS AND SIDE PANELS, WHICH WERE ORIGINAL BLUE, WERE OUT FOR REUPHOLSTRY, WHICH WAS STOPPED, AND HAVE NOT YET BEEN RETURNED TO THE AIRPLANE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE FORMER OWNER STILL HAS THEM IN HIS HANGER AT THE AIRPORT, BUT I AM ONLY ALLOWED TO TALK TO HIM THROUGH HIS LAWYER, WHO AS OF YET HAS NOT CALLED ME BACK.THEREFORE, I MUST SELL THIS AIRPLANE WITHOUT THE SEATS AND SIDE PANELS!YOU CAN SEE THAT THE REAR PANEL AND HATSHELF PLASTIC IS INTACT, AS ARE THE REAR SEAT BACKREST SUPPORTS. THE NEWER MOONEYS LIKE THIS (AND MY BRAVO, THE 252/OVATION, ETC. USE VELCRO-IN PADS FOR THE REAR BUCKET SEATS, WITH NO SPRINGS OR SUPPORTS, SO THEY ARE MOSTLY FOAM WITH A COVER, EASY TO FABRICATE.THE FRONT SEATS ARE STANDARD 201/231, SO NOT RARE, AND WE WILL INCLUDE A SET OF STANDARD FRONT SEATS WITH THIS AIRPLANE AT NO CHARGE!IF YOU HAVE LOOKED AT THE DASH, YOU WILL SEE THE RADIO PANEL UNITS ARE OUT, BUT THE TRAYS FOR A GNX-480, PM 8000 AUDIO PANEL, GARMIN 330ES, KAP 100 AUTOPILOT AND KING KX-155 ARE STILL INSTALLED AND WIRED.
