COMPITITION AND ADDING 17 SEPARATE AIRFRAME MODIFICATIONS, ROY LOPRESTI AND HIS TEAM OF GO-FAST ENGINEERS TURNED A GOOD AIRPLANE (THE M20F) INTO A GREAT AIRPLANE, THE M20J/201!ANY YEAR 201 IS A DESIREABLE CROSS-COUNTRY CRUISER AND WILL GIVE MANY OF THE MODERN 2 SEAT HOMEBUILTS A GOOD RUN, BUT WITH ROOM FOR 4 REAL PEOPLE, LARGE BAGGAGE AREA WITH EXTERNAL DOOR, AND A STABLE IFR PLATFORM, WITH ALL OF THE ADVANTAGES OF A FACTORY BUILT, TIME-TESTED PRODUCTION AIRPLANE!BUT NOT A 201 MPH AIRPLANE!MOST PEOPLE KNOW THAT THE TEST AIRPLANE THAT SUPPOSEDLY ATTAINED 201 MPH WAS NOT A “STOCK” AIRPLANE, AND THAT YOU CAN’T MAKE A STOCK ’77 DO MUCH MORE THAN 185 MPH.AS THE YEARS WENT ON, MOONEY CONTINUED TO TWEAK THE AIRPLANE, MAYBE A LITTLE EMBARRESED THAT THEY HAD FUDGED WITH THE NAME, MAYBE JUST BECAUSE THEY COULD.AIRFRAME MODS LIKE SECOND OUTER GEAR DOORS, BETTER NOSE GEAR DOORS AND UPSWEPT WINGTIPS ADDED SPEED (FOR A WHILE, THESE FACTORY MODDED AIRPLANES WERE CALLED 205’S, BECAUSE THEY WERE 4 MPH FASTER OR SO) BUT IN THE LATE 1980’S, THEY CHANGED THE NAME TO MSE, NO NUMBER. MSE STANDS FOR “MAXIMUM SPEED EDITION” OR “MOONEY SPECIAL EDITION” DEPENDING ON WHO YOU BELIEVE.ALL MSE MODELS HAVE THE NEWER ROUNDED SIDE WINDOWS (THE BIGGEST VISUAL CHANGE IN THE 201 RUN), THE DOUBLE GEAR DOORS AND UPSWEPT WINGTIPS, PLUS A NEW 28 VOLT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (SMALLER, LIGHTER COMPONANTS TO HANDLE THE SAME AMPERAGE), SEPERATE REAR BUCKET SEATS THAT EASILY FOLD FOR A FLAT, HUGE BAGGAGE AREA, AND DETAIL CHANGES LIKE LANDING AND TAXI LIGHTS IN THE WING, NOT COWLING AND ELECTRIC COWL FLAP MOTORS.ALL MSE MODELS ALSO HAVE THE 1 PIECE FIBERGLASS BELLY PAN, A SPEED IMPROVER, BUT ALSO A HUGE BOON TO MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTIONS. 32 DZUS FASTENERS ON 1 PANEL REPLACE 3 METAL PANELS AND 175 SCREWS!!THE M20J LINE ENDED AT THE END OF THE 1990’S WITH VERY LOW PRODUCTION, AS THE FACTORY HAD SWITCHED IT’S ATTENTION TO THE BIG ENGINED BRAVO AN OVATION.THE MSE BENEFITED FROM THE ADVANCES OF THE OVATION/BRAVO, AND ALL OF THE 1990’S AIRPLANES ARE VERY SIMILAR, WITH FACTORY SPEEDBRAKES (ONCE YOU HAVE THEM, YOU WILL NOT WANT TO FLY A HIGH PERFORMANCE AIRPLANE WITHOUT THEM), KING KAP150 AUTOPILOT WITH ALTITUDE HOLD, WING LEVELING AND AUTO/MANUAL ELECTRIC TRIM (A GREAT SYSTEM), FAR BETTER INTERIORS, WITH MOLDED HEADLINERS AND BETTER SEATS AND MOST WERE PRODUCED WITH THE SAME PAINT SCHEME AS THE BRAVO, WHITE UPPER, DARKER LOWER, WITH GOLD STRIPES SEPERATING THE TWO.OF THE OVER 1,700 201 MODELS PRODUCED, THIS AIRPLANE IS 124 FROM THE LAST!IT HAS ALL OF THE FACTORY EQUIPMENT, AND BOTH SEATS ARE THE OPTIONAL MULTI ADJUSTABLE VARIETY!THIS AIRPLANE HAS 4,482 HOURS SINCE NEW.THE 200 H.P. LYCOMING IO-360 HAS ONLY 632 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL IN 2017.THE PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE LANDED AT THE PORTLAND OREGON AIRPORT (PDX) AND HAD AN ISSUE.THE PILOT CLAIMS THE GEAR RETRACTED ON HIM DURING THE LANDING ROLLOUT, AND SURE ENOUGH, ALL 3 SETS OF GEAR DOORS HAVE SOME SCRAPING DAMAGE.IN ADDITION, THE NOSEGEAR UPPER TUBING IS BROKEN AT THE ACTUATOR ATTACH POINTS AND 2 OF THE MAIN GEAR ACTUATIONG TUBES ARE BENT.YOU MAY KNOW THAT THE MOONEY USES PUSH PULL TUBES FOR THE ENTIRE GEAR ACTUATING SYSTEM, BUT WHEN YOU KNOW HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS AND HOW IT REACTED IN THIS SITUATION, YOU MAY WONDER IF THE PILOT’S DESCRIPTION IS ENTIRELY ACCURATE.SINCE THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE PIVOTS OR BELLCRANKS IN THE SYSTEM, IT IS DIFFICULT TO SHOW HOW THE SYSTEM FAILED ON THE RUNWAY, IF IT HAD BEEN DOWN AND LOCKED. ONE OF THE MECHANICS THAT ASSISTED WITH REMOVAL OF THE AIRPLANE SAYS THEY WERE ABLE TO LOWER THE MAIN GEAR WITH THE SWITCH AFTER LIFTING CAREFULLY (THE EARS ON THE NOSE WERE BROKEN, SO THEY WOULDN’T MOVE), SO THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION DID NOT FAIL, AND WERE NOT DAMAGED.THERE IS A SUGGESTION THAT PURHAPS THE GEAR WAS LOWERED LAST THING, JUST BEFORE TOUCHDOWN, AND WAS NOT ABLE TO GET DOWN AND LOCKED BEFORE TOUCHDOWN, AND THE GEAR SAGGED PARTIALLY AFTER TOUCHING.IT ONLY MATTERS ON A FEW ITEMS.THE PROP BLADES ARE BOTH BENT ON THE ENDS, REGARDLESS.THE NOSE GEAR DOORS ARE SCRAPED, REGARDLESS. (BECAUSE OF THE BROKEN ACTUATING ARMS, THE NOSEGEAR WENT FULLY DOWN)THERE IS SCRAPING TO THE FIBERGLASS BELLY PANEL, WITH 2 SMALL AREAS SCRAPED THROUGH AND ONE ARE THINNED, BUT HERE IS WHERE THE MAIN GEAR NOT FULLY COLLAPSING STARTS TO HELP!ONLY THESE 3 AREAS HAVE DAMAGE, NOT THE WHOLE PANEL, AND REPAIR WILL BE VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD AND FAR CHEAPER THAN THE $6,000 REPLACEMENT PART!THE BOTTOM OF THE STEP HAS A SMALL SCRAPED AREA, BUT NOT DEEP OR SERIOUS, BUT EVEN THE EXPENSIVE SHOP THAT DID THE ESTIMATE TO REPAIR WASN’T GOING TO REPLACE IT, JUST SMOOTH AND PAINT! NO DAMAGE TO THE ATTACH POINT IN THE FUSELAGE.THERE ARE 2 MAIN GEAR DOORS ON EACH MAIN LEG OF THE MSE, THE STANDARD FLAT OUTER DOOR AND THE LOWER, CURVED DOOR WHICH COVERS THE BRAKES AND PART OF THE WHEEL.THE FLAT OUTER DOORS ON BOTH SIDES ARE UNDAMAGED, WITH ONLY THE SMALLER LOWER DOORS BEING SCRAPED, AND THESE ONLY ON THE “BULGED” SECTION. AS THE GEAR WAS ALWAYS AT LEAST PARTIALLY OUT, THE ANGLE PROTECTED THE OUTER DOORS, THE GEAR ITSELF AND THE WHEELS AND BRAKES FROM DAMAGE.IT IS PRESUMED THAT THE RIGHT GEAR RETRACTED FARTHER THAN THE LEFT, AS THERE IS SCRAPING TO THE OUTBOARD FLAP HANGER AND ONLY THE TINIEST SCRAPE ON THE OUTBOARD BOTTOM WING SKIN AND THE SAME TINY SCRAPE ON THE REAR BOTTOM EDGE OF THE RIGHT WINGTIP.THERE IS A SMALL DENT ON THE LEFT WING LOWER OUTER SKIN AS WELL, BUT NO SCRAPING AND IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION AS THE RIGHT. IT IS PRESUMED TO BE PREVIOUS HANGER RASH AND WAS NOT PART OF THIS INCIDENT, NOR DOES IT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.ADDITIONAL SCRAPING IS FOUND ON ONE OF THE BELLY TO WING FAIRINGS AND THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE EXHAUST PIPE.DUE TO THE GEAR HOLDING THE BELLY SLIGHTLY UP, THE ONLY DAMAGE IN THE BELLY STRUCTURE IS TO A SMALL TUBE IN THE FORWARD STRUCTURE, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 50% GROUND THROUGH.LUCKILY, THIS TUBE IS AVAILABLE FOR MOONEY FOR ONLY $133. IT WILL NEED TO BE WELDED IN FOR THE FINAL REPAIR.THE 2 MAIN GEAR ACTUATING TUBES WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT (1 BENT, THE OTHER BENT AND SCRAPED). THE LONG ACTUATING TUBES AND BELLCRANKS FOR THE NOSEGEAR DO NOT APPEAR HURT, ONLY THE UPPER NOSEGEAR WELD ASSEMBLY (NO DAMAGE TO THE DONUTS, LOWER WELD ASSEMBLY, AXLE OR WHEEL).LUCKILY, THE PARTIAL GEAR OUT HELPED TO SAVE THE GEAR MOTOR ITSELF FROM SCRAPING (VERY COMMON IN STANDARD GEAR UPS) AS WELL AS THE MOUNTING BRACKET FOR THE GEAR COUNTERWEIGHT SPRING (THIS BRACKET ALWAYS, ALWAYS GETS SCRAPED IN A REGULAR GEAR UP, AND IT IS BOTH EXPENSIVE AND EXTENSIVE TO REPLACE).WITH THE EXCEPTION TO THE LIGHTLY SCRAPED OUTER SKIN AND THE PRE-EXISTING DENT IN THE OTHER OUTBOARD SKIN, THERE IS NO WING DAMAGE TO THIS AIRCRAFT !!NO TAIL DAMAGE AT ALLTHERE IS A SLIGHT COSMETIC SCRAPE TO ONE OF THE COWL FLAP REAR EDGES, BUT YOU WILL PAINT IT, NOT REPLACE IT.NO DAMAGE TO THE COWLINGS AT ALL.NO DAMAGE TO THE SPINNER.OF COURSE, THE UPPER CABIN, DOORS AND GLASS ARE ALL COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED.INSIDE, THE SEATS AND ACCENTS IN THE SIDE PANELS HAVE RECENTLY BEEN RECOVERED WITH A RICH BUCKSKIN COLORED LEATHER, THAT LOOKS AND SMELLS GREAT! REMEMBER THESE ARE THE LATEST STYLE OF ADJUSTABLE SEATS!I KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU ARE WONDERING WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO FERRY THIS AIRPLANE, CONSIDERING THE DAMAGE IS LESS THAN A NORMAL GEAR UP, AND MOST GEAR UP AIRPLANES FERRY.WELL, THE SHOP IN PORTLAND THAT DID THE REPAIR ESTIMATE FIGURED THEY WERE GOING TO GET THE JOB, SO AS PART OF THE COMPLETE INSPECTION, THEY REMOVED A FEW SKINS, INCLUDING THE SMALL OUTBOARD ONE ON THE RIGHT WING AND A SMALL FAIRING ON THE BELLY. THEY ALSO REMOVED THE 2 BENT MAIN ACTUATING RODS (NO BIG DEAL, THEY WOULD NEED REPLACING TO FERRY ANYWAY). BY REMOVING THE WING SKIN, THEY DID CONFIRM NO FURTHER DAMAGE IN THE WING.THEY ALSO REMOVED THE ENGINE FROM THE MOUNT AND STARTED TO STRIP IT DOWN TO SEND OUT FOR A PROP STRIKE TEARDOWN (OVERHAUL IS NOT REQUIRED OR INDICATED ON THIS LOW TIME, RECENT ENGINE WITH 2,000 HOUR RECOMMENDED TIME BETWEEN OVERHAULS). THIS INCLUDED REMOVING THE STARTER, ALTERNATOR, FUEL SERVO AND COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (NOT JUST THE SCRAPED PIPE) AND DISCONNECTING ALL THE HOSES AND LINES. PROPERLY, SO THEY COULD EASILY PUT EVERTHING BACK TOGETHER WHEN THE ENGINE CAME BACK. BUT OFF AND INSIDE THE SHOP NOW.WHEN THEY FOUND OUT THE AIRPLANE HAD BEEN SOLD TO ME INSTEAD OF REPAIRED THERE, THEY BOLTED THE ENGINE BACK IN, BUT DIDN’T HOOK ANYTHING BACK IN.THEY REMOVED THE WINGTIPS FOR A CLOSE INSPECTION OF THE WING SKINS AS WELL.THE RIGHT AILERON WAS REMOVED (NO DAMAGE) AND THE RIGHT FLAP (NO DAMAGE EXCEPT THE 1 SUPPORT ARM).THE SEATS ARE UNBOLTED FOR ACCESS TO SOME RIVETS IN THAT BELLY FAIRING THEY REMOVED.SO ALTHOUGH THE AIRCRAFT COULD BE MADE FERRIABLE, THIS IS NOT AN EASY, ONE DAY PROJECT.THE GUYS IN PORTLAND WERE VERY NICE TO ME WHEN I WAS THERE LAST WEEK, BUT I GET THE FEELING THEY HANDLE MUCH BIGGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE STUFF AND ARE NOT IN THE MOONEY REPAIR BUSINESS.NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT THE DASH!ALMOST EVERY 1990’S MSE HAD A COMPLETE KING DIGITAL RADIO PACKAGE IN IT FROM THE FACTORY, INCLUDING THIS ONE, BUT IN 2016 THE WHOLE DASH WAS RIPPED OUT AND A FULL, MODERN GARMIN STACK WAS ADDED, PFD/MFD, ETC., ETC. BUT THIS AIRPLANE IS NOT BEING SOLD WITH ANY OF THAT!THE DASH IS VIRTUALLY EMPTY, AS SHOWN, WITH THE ONLY PIECE LEFT BEING THE KING KAP 150 AUTOPILOT, WHICH IS STILL FULLY WIRED UP, WITH THE SERVOS MOUNTED, INSTALLED AND INCLUDED.THE REST OF THE STUFF, SEEN AND UNSEEN, IS NOT!AS MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE, WE SELL HIGH END AVIONICS EVERY DAY, AND WITH MODERN GARMIN RADIOS, EVEN THE CONNECTORS THAT GO TO THE RADIOS ARE SPECIFIC TO THAT SERIAL NUMBER RADIO, SO WE CANNOT ALLOW THEM TO STAY WITH THE AIRPLANE, THEY HAVE TO GO TO WHOMEVER BUYS THE RADIOS FROM US.OF COURSE, NOT GETTING THE RADIOS THAT WERE INSTALLED GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO INSTALL WHATEVER YOU WANT NOW!
