1999 "TOMMY HAWK", MODIFIED HATZ BIPLANE WITH CUSTOM WW1 ALBATROSS LOOK !! SUPER COOL, SUPER CHEAP !! OK, SO MAYBE MOST OF US PILOT"S WISH WE COULD BE SNOOPY, TANGLING WITH THE RED BARON, WHILE FLYING OUR SOPWITH CAMEL OVER FRANCE. NO MATTER WHAT YOU FLY FOR YOUR "NORMAL" AIRPLANE", IT SEEMS JUST ABOUT EVERYONE WOULD ALSO LOVE TO HAVE A "FUN" AIRPLANE, TO GO SLOW IN, PERFORM SOME LIGHT AEROBATICS IN, OR MAYBE JUST ATTRACT ATTENTION, EITHER ON THE RAMP OR IN THE CORNER OR YOUR HANGER. THE BUILDER OF THIS AIRPLANE WANTED IT BAD ENOUGH TO BUILD HIS OWN !! THIS AIRPLANE STARTED LIFE AS A HATZ BIPLANE, BUT DURING CONSTRUCTION, THE BUILDER (TOMMY), MODIFIED IT IN MANY WAYS, TO RESEMBLE A GERMAN WORLD WAR 1 ALBATROSS !! (THOSE OF YOU FAMILIAR WITH WW1 PLANES SAW THE RESEMBLANCE IMMEDIATELY I WOULD THINK) WHEN PAINTED WITH ALTERNATING COLORS OF LIGHT GREY, OFFWHITE AND WHITE-BLUE, IN AN EARLY CAMOUFLAGE SCHEME, WITH THE DISTINCTIVE RED ACCENTS AND EARLY IRON CROSS INSIGNIA, THE EFFECT IS STRIKING, AND ATTENTION GETTING !! LEST YOU THINK THIS AIRPLANE IS SOME KIND OF FRANKENSTEIN, MADE FOR LOOKS BUT UNFLYABLE IN THE REAL WORLD, (LIKE SOME EXACT SCALE REPLICAS ARE) BE ASSURED, THIS IS A COMFORTABLE, DOCILE, GOOD FLYING AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE HAS 437 FLIGHT HOURS SINCE NEW, AND THIS INCLUDED A 28 HOUR ROUND TRIP FROM SAN ANTONIO TEXAS TO OSHKOSH FOR THE 2011 AIRSHOW, WHERE IT WAS QUITE THE STAR !! BESIDES ALL THE INTERESTED LOOKERS, THE EAA LIKED THE AIRPLANE ENOUGH TO GIVE IT A PHOTO SHOOT AND PUT IT INTO ONE OF THIER SUBSEQUENT CALENDARS !! THOSE OF YOU WHO FOLLOW MY LISTINGS ON EBAY MAY BE ABLE TO TELL THAT I LIKE AIRPLANES, IN FACT HAVE MOST OF MY LIFE. MY CURRENT POSITION, AS OWNER OF THE COMPANY THAT BUYS THE LARGEST VOLUME OF DAMAGED AIRCRAFT IN THE WORLD, GIVES ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEMPORARILY OWN SOME REALLY NEAT AIRPLANES, AND FIND GOOD HOMES FOR THEM. THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE. SOMEBODY IS GOING TO LOVE THIS AIRPLANE, AND FIX IT BACK TO PERFECT AGAIN !! THE OWNER OF THIS AIRPLANE, WHO LIVES ON A COOL AIRPARK NEAR SAN ANTONIO TEXAS, WAS LANDING AT HOME ONE DAY, ON THE LONG BUT FAIRLY NARROW ASPHALT RUNWAY, WHEN A SMALL LINK IN THE MAIN GEAR FAILED, AND THE RIGHT GEAR LEG WAS ALLOWED TO PARTIALLY SPLAY OUT. FROM THAT MOMENT ON, THE PILOT HAD NO CONTROL, AND THE AIRPLANE LEFT THE RUNWAY TO THE RIGHT, SCRAPING THE RIGHT LOWER WING ON THE PAVEMENT. WHEN THE WING HIT THE DIRT ALONGSIDE THE RUNWAY, IT ACCELERATED THE TURN, AND THE AIRPLANE ENDED UP ALMOST BACKWARD, RESTING ON THE RIGHT WING TIP AND GEAR, AND THE LOWER COWLING CENTER SECTION. THERE IS DAMAGE AS A RESULT, BUT NOT REALLY ENOUGH TO TOTAL IT IN THE TRADITIONAL SENSE. THE DAMAGE IS ISOLATED, AND NOT MAJOR, TO THE AIRFRAME, AND ALTHOUGH THE PROP IS DESTROYED, IT WAS A WOOD PROP (OF COURSE), AND THE LYCOMING ENGINE WAS NOT UNDER POWER AT THE TIME, DAMAGE IS AS FOLLOWS: WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE IS A SMALL ROUND SECTION OF THE GEAR LINKAGE, WHICH ATTACHES TO THE SPRING ON THE LOWER STRUT. THE END OF THIS LINKAGE, WHICH WRAPS AROUND A SIMPLE AN BOLT, OPENED UP, AND ALLOWED THE GEAR TO HINGE UP. THAT"S IT. THE PART IS 3/4" IN DIAMETER AND ABOUT 5" LONG, AND IS MADE OF STEEL. THERE IS NO OTHER OBVIOUS DAMAGE TO THE GEAR ON EITHER SIDE. AFTER FABRICATION OF THIS PART, YOU WOULD WANT TO CHECK TOE AND CAMBER, OF COURSE, BUT THE PAINT IS NOT CRACKED ON THE STRUT, SO NO MOVEMENT IS VISIBLE THE RIGHT WING AT THE CANTED TIP IS SCRAPED ON THE UNDERSIDE AND BROKEN UP AT THE LEADING EDGE, BUT THE TIP HAS IT"S OWN SPAR EXTENSION, AND WHAT I CAN SEE OF THE MAIN SPAR DOESNT SEEM AFFECTED THE OUTBOARD SECTION OF THE LOWER AILERON IS SCRAPED AS WELL. BOTH THE WINGTIP AREA AND OUTBOARD AILERON WILL REQUIRE FABRIC PATCHING THE COWLING, WHICH WAS HAND FABRICATED FROM LIGHT ALUMINUM SHEET, IS MADE UP OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT PANELS, WHICH IS GREAT, BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM EASY TO DUPLICATE, AND MOST OF THEM ARE NOT DAMAGED. THE CENTER LOWER PANEL HAS A FAIRLY GOOD WRINKLE, BUT IT IS BASICALLY A FLAT SHEET WITH FASTENERS, AND WILL BE STRAIGHTFORWARD TO COPY. THE RIGHT LOWER SECTION HAS A FEW WAVES, WHICH MAY JUST FLATTEN OUT, BUT AGAIN IT IS NOT ALL COMPOUND BENT, SO MAYBE IT WOULD BE EASIER TO FABRICATE. THERE IS A LIGHT CHANNEL AT THE BOTTOM EDGE THAT IS BENT, AGAIN NOT FANCY. THE FRONT OF THE COWLING, BEHIND THE SPINNER BACKING PLATE, IS A FLAT SHEET WITH 90 DEGREE FLANGES FOR ATTACHING TO THE COWL SKINS. THAT IS THE EXTENT OF THE KNOWN DAMAGE TO THIS ENTIRE AIRFRAME !!!!!!!!!!!! THE OWNER IS CONCERNED THAT THE FIREWALL SKIN MAY HAVE DEFORMED, BUT HE COULDN"T ACTUALLY SHOW ME WHERE IT WAS, (HE SAID HE WASN"T REALLY SURE IT HAD A PROBLEM) AND THE FIREWALL IS NOT STRUCTURAL ANYWAY ON THIS TUBING STRUCTURED AIRCRAFT. THE ENTIRE BALANCE OF THIS AIRFRAME IS UNDAMAGED !! FROM THE BOOTCOWL, THROUGH THE DUAL COCKPITS (WITH DUAL CONTROLS) TO THE METAL TURTLEDECK, TO THE TAILCONE, THERE IS NO FUSELAGE DAMAGE AT ALL !! SCOTT 3200 TAILWHEEL, THIS IS NOT A CHINCY AIRPLANE !! THE CUSTOM WW1-LOOK WHEELS ARE ACTUALLY MOTORCYCLE WHEELS, BUT THEY ARE FITTED WITH ACTUAL CLEVELAND BRAKES AND ROTORS !! THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF THE JURY STRUTS OR FLYING WIRES THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE UPPER WING THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING OR SURFACES THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE TAIL FEATHERS THE RIGHT LANDING GEAR DID NOT COME UP ENOUGH TO HURT THE UNDERSIDE OF THE WING THE ANGLE OF REST DID NOT DAMAGE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM OR DUAL EXHAUST TIPS !! THE CARB AND CARB AIR BOX ARE NOT TOUCHED THE WOOD PROP, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS SHATTERED THIS CALLS THE ENGINE INTO QUESTION THE LYCOMING 0-290G, 125 H.P. ENGINE WAS A GOVERNMENT SURPLUS GENERATOR ENGINE, PRODUCED IN LARGE NUMBERS FOR THE ARMY, AND THEN SOLD AS SURPLUS. THIS ENGINE ALSO SHOWS 437 HOURS MANY, IF NOT MOST OF THE HOMEBUILTS FROM THE 1960"S AND EARLY SEVENTIES THAT DIDNT USE A VW OR HALF VW USED AN 0-290G. IT"S INCLUSION ON A PLANE BUILT ON THE CUSP OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM IS STRANGE, BUT THIS BUILDER WENT HIS OWN WAY THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT SEEMS TO BE A GREAT POWERPLANT FOR THIS AIRPLANE !! THE PILOT CONFIRMED A GOOD RATE OF CLIMB, PLENTY OF POWER FOR MANEUVERS, ETC. UPDATED NOT ONLY FOR AIRCRAFT USE BEFORE INSTALLATION, BUT SINCE THEN AS WELL, IT SPORTS RECENT NEW CHROME O-290D2 CYLINDERS, FOUND BY THE CURRENT OWNER, AND RECENTLY INSTALLED LIGHTWEIGHT MODERN STARTER AND ALTERNATOR SAVE WEIGHT AND PERFORM BETTER THE PROPELLOR HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED, SO A DIAL INDICATE OF THE CRANK HAS NOT BEEN DONE, SORRY. REMEMBER, IT IS A WOOD PROP. COINCIDENTLY, THE STRAIGHT MOUNT 150 H.P. AND 160 H.P. 0-320A AND B SERIES ENGINES, AS WELL AS 0-290D2 135 H.P. ENGINES, ALL COMMONLY FOUND ON TRIPACERS AND OTHERS ARE A DIRECT, BOLT ON REPLACEMENT FOR THE 0-290G CONVERSION, IF YOU HAVE A HANKERING. THE LAST ITEM OF DAMAGE IS THE CUSTOM SPINNER, WHICH GOT FLATTENED. THE BUILDER MADE IT OUT OF A STAINLESS MIXING BOWL, BECAUSE IT GAVE THE "ALBATROSS" LOOK HE WANTED. NO KIDDING WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR LINKAGE END, AND A PROPELLOR, AND NORMAL PATCHING, IT SURE SEEMS LIKE THIS AIRPLANE WOULD FERRY OUT, BUT MAYBE I AM THINKING ABOUT THIS AIRPLANE INCORRECTLY. I WOULD GUESS THAT THE NEW OWNER WILL WANT TO MAKE IT PERFECT BEFORE HE EVER FLYS IT, SO THAT HE FEELS THE SAME PRIDE THE BUILDER, AND THE LONGTIME OWNER/PILOT DID, WHEN THEY SHOWED IT OFF. HANGERED AT A SMALL AIRPARK NEAR KERRVILLE TEXAS. THE FORMER OWNER HAS AGREED TO LEAVE IT IN HIS HANGER UNTIL THE NEW OWNER COLLECTS IT, AT $200 PER MONTH. WE WILL PAY THE FIRST MONTH. SOLD WITH FAA BILL OF SALE AND AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE, AS WELL AS AIRFRAME AND ENGINE LOGBOOKS. THE FORMER OWNER HAS 125 PHOTOS OF THE AIRPLANE DURING IT"S CONSTRUCTION, AND HE WILL ALLOW THE NEW OWNER TO COPY THEM IF THEY WOULD LIKE. THE FORMER OWNER IS NOT THE BUILDER, AND HAS NO INTEREST OR ABILITY TO HELP WITH THE FABRICATION OF PARTS OR OTHER REPAIRS, AND THERE IS NO ONE IN THE AREA THAT HE FOUND WITH THE TIME TO DO IT, SO IF YOU CAN"T DO IT YOURSELF, PLAN ON HAVING SOMEONE IN YOUR AREA DO IT, NOT THERE. IF THIS ISNT A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR THE RIGHT PERSON, THEN I DON"T KNOW WHAT IS !! AS AN INCENTIVE TO HIT THE BUY IT NOW, WE WILL INCLUDE THE MICROAIR 760 COMM RADIO THAT HAD BEEN MOUNTED IN A SPECIAL LOWER PANEL, IF THE BUYER USES THE BUY IT NOW. THE WIRING IS STILL INSTALLED, AND THERE IS A GOOD ANTENNA, NOT JUST A METAL STICK, SO IT GIVES GOOD RANGE. YOU WANTED TO HIT THE BUY IT NOW ANYWAY, SO HERE IS THE INCENTIVE. CHEAP, BUT NICE. WHAT A GREAT COMBINATION !! GOOD BIDDING AS WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT IS LOCATED IN CRYSTAL,MINNESOTA, NOT........KERRVILLE, TEXAS…..…….. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PERSONALLY ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR OR MOVING OF THIS AIRPLANE SORRY. WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT DOES NOT OBTAIN REPAIR ESTIMATES, AS WE DO NOT REPAIR ANY OF OUR AIRPLANES. WE ONLY FACILITATE THE SALE OF REBUILDABLE AIRCRAFT TO THOSE DESIRING TO SAVE MONEY OR HAVE MORE AIRPLANE THAN OTHERWISE POSSIBLE FOR THE MONEY. REPAIR OF ANY AIRCRAFT WILL DEPEND ON MANY FACTORS, SUCH AS AVAILABILITY OF USED PARTS, LABOR RATE OF THE REPAIR FACILITY, FAMILIARITY WITH THE AIRCRAFT, ETC. AND WE WOULD NEVER PRESUME TO ESTIMATE THIS NUMBER FOR A BUYER. BEWARE OF THOSE WHO OBVIOUSLY GIVE UNREALISTICALLY LOW "ESTIMATES" FOR THE REPAIR OF THE DAMAGED AIRCRAFT THEY SELL. THIS ITEM IS BEING SOLD WITH A LOW RESERVE, THEREFORE WE FULLY EXPECT THIS LISTING WILL SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER AT THE CLOSE OF THIS AUCTION, SO BID EARLY AND BID HIGH. THERE WILL BE NO CHANCE TO BUY THIS ITEM LATER!! AS WE SET OUR BUY-IT-NOW SO LOW, MANY OF OUR AIRPLANES SELL BY THIS METHOD BEFORE THE END OF THE AUCTION.
