1963 PIPER CHEROKEE 160, 6,051 TTAF, COMPLETE AIRFRAME WITH NO DAMAGE, CHEAP!!THE PIPER CHEROKEE HAS BEEN PRODUCED WITH MANY ENGINE, PROP AND WING CONFIGURATIONS, AND EVEN 2 SHORT AND 1 LONGER FUSELAGE, SO IT TAKES QUITE AN AFFECTIONADO TO KNOW ALL THE VARIATIONS.THE AIRPLANE FOR SALE HERE IS A 160.THAT DESIGNATION, AS YOU MIGHT GUESS, WAS TO DENOTE THE HORSEPOWER, WHICH WAS 160 H.P. FROM A LYCOMING 0-320. THE FIRST CHEROKEES BUILT WERE THE 150 AND 160 MODELS, IDENTICAL IN EVERY RESPECT EXCEPT THE HORSEPOWER COMING FROM THE LYCOMING 0-320 ENGINE INSTALLED.THESE AIRCRAFT WERE INTENDED AS TRAINING AND TOURING AIRCRAFT, DIRECT COMPETITORS TO CESSNA’S 172 (145 H.P.) AND 175 (165 H.P.)AS TOURING AIRPLANES, THEY WERE FOUR SEAT AIRPLANES (FULL BENCH SEAT IN THE REAR), WITH AN OUTSIDE DOOR FOR THE FULL SIZED BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT!IF THIS SEEMS MORE LIKE THE CHEROKEE 180 THAT YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH, YOU WOULD BE CORRECT!THE 180, WHICH CAME OUT A YEAR LATER THAN THE 150/160, USES THE SAME FUSELAGE AS THE 150 AND 160!I OFTEN HAVE PEOPLE CONFUSE THE 140 AS HAVING A 140 H.P. ENGINE, BUT IT DOESN’T. IT HAS THE SAME O-320, 150 H.P. AS THE CHEROKEE 150, BUT MANY, MANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE FUSELAGE TO MAKE IT A CHEAPER AIRPLANE, HENCE THE NUMBER IS LOWER THAN THE MORE OPTIONED CHEROKEE 150.THE 140 CAM WITH NO REAR SEAT, (LITTLE JUMPSEATS WERE OPTIONAL)NO BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT ON THE 140NO BAGGAGE DOOR ON THE 140EVEN THE ENGINE GUAGE PACKAGE WAS CHEAPER AND LESS INFORMATIVE ON THE 140!SO IT WOULD BE BEST TO THINK OF THE 160, LIKE THIS ONE, AS A 180, BUT WITH AN ENGINE THAT WEIGHS A LITTLE LESS, DRINKS LESS FUEL PER HOUR, AND HAS 20 LESS HORSEPOWER.THE GROSS WEIGHT ON 1 160 IS 2,200 LBS, WITH A FACTORY WEIGHT OF 1,200 LBS AND A NORMALLY EQUIPPED WEIGHT OF 1,300 LBS, SO A USEFUL LOAD OF APPROX 900 LBS.WITH 5 HOURS FUEL ON BOARD, THE 160 WILL HOLD 600 LBS IN THE CABIN, SO NOT 4 FULL SIZED PEOPLE, BUT 3 IS FINE, OR 2 ADULTS AND 2 KIDS, AND SOME LUGGAGE.IF I SOUND FAMILIAR WITH THE 160, I AM, AS I SOLOED IN A CHEROKEE 160 ON MY 16TH BIRTHDAY, SO I ALWAYS REMEMBER IT AS THE AIRPLANE THAT ALLOWED ME TO “SLIP THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH”.THIS AIRPLANE SUFFERED AN INCIDENT, BUT NOT AN ACCIDENT, AND THE INCIDENT DID NOT DAMAGE THE AIRFRAME AT ALL!!WHILE TAXIING, THE LEFT WINGTIP CAUGHT THE EDGE OF A HANGER. THE AIRCRAFT PIVOTED AROUND THAT POINT JUST SLIGHTLY, ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE PROPELLOR TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE SIDE OF THE HANGER AND IT’S SUPPORTS.THE SPEED WAS SLOW, SO THE MOMENTUM DID NOT FORCE THE FUSELAGE OR EVEN THE COWLING INTO THE HANGER, JUST THE PROP.AS A RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT, THE PROPELLOR WAS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE CRANKSHAFT WAS BENT BEYOND LEGAL LIMITS.THE ENGINE AND ACCESSORIES AS WELL AS THE PROP ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION.WHAT YOU ARE BUYING IS A COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED AIRFRAME!WHAT ABOUT THE WINGTIP, YOU ASK?WE HAVE INCLUDED A PHOTO OF THE FIBERGLASS, HORNER STYLE WINGTIP. SEE THE PAINT SCRAPE AND THE DAMAGED NAV-LIGHT?THAT’S IT!THE WINGTIP IS NOT ACTUALLY EVEN CRACKED!AND THE REST OF THE AIRFRAME, FROM COWLING TO TAILCONE, SHOWS NO DAMAGE!!AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS IS A GOOD LOOKING AIRPLANE, NOT THE NEWEST PAINT SCHEME BUT IN GOOD CONDITION OVERALL, AND FAR NEWER AND NICER THAN THE BRICK RED ORIGINAL SCHEME!INSIDE, THE BLUE CLOTH SEATS HAVE BEEN REUPHOLSTERED AND ARE IN FINE SHAPE, BUT THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD SIDE PANELS WERE REUSED AT THE LAST REFURB, AND THEY SIMPLY HAVE NOT HELD UP WELL. AIRTEX MAKES THESE PANELS WITH A NEW CELLULAR PLASTIC BACKING THAT ARE FAR SUPERIOR AND PRICED REASONABLY.THE DASH HAS GOOD PLASTICS, ALMOST ALL FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS AND THE WHOLE ENGINE GUAGE CLUSTER, BUT NO AVIONICS ARE INSTALLED. THE TRAYS ARE STILL INSTALLED FOR A KING AUDIO PANEL AND KX-170B NAV-COM, BUT NO PANEL UNITS ARE INCLUDED.THE INTERCOM SYSTEM IS INSTALLED AND INCLUDED .THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS EACH HAVE LIGHT RINGS INSTALLED, WITH THEIR OWN REOSTAT, TO ELIMINATE THE PROBLEM OF LACK OF INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ON EARLY CHEROKEES.IN THE PHOTO THAT SHOWS THE UNDAMAGED ENGINE MOUNT AND THE UNDAMAGED FIREWALL, YOU WILL NOTE THAT THE FUEL AND OIL HOSES, FUEL PUMP, ELECTRICAL WIRES, HOSES AND ENGINE CONTROL CABLES ARE STILL INSTALLED AND INCLUDED, MAKING ENGINE REPLACEMENT FAR EASIER.THE PHOTO ALSO SHOWS DAMAGE TO 2 CONTROL SURFACES, NOT CAUSED BY THE ORIGINAL ACCIDENT:THE RIGHT AILERON HAS A SMALL DENT IN THE TRAILING EDGE, PRE-EXISTING, NOT RELATED TO THIS INCIDENT AND THE AIRPLANE HAS BEEN FLYING THIS WAY AND A DENT/PUSH ON THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE RIGHT FLAP, CAUSED AFTER THE INCIDENT, WHEN THE AIRPLANE WAS BEING PUSHED BACKWARD INTO A DIFFERENT HANGER AND THE PUSHERS PUSHED TOO FAR. VERY REPAIRABLE, BUT YOU NEEDED TO KNOW!THE WINGS SHOW NO DAMAGETHE STABILATOR, VERTICAL FIN AND RUDDER SHOW NO DAMAGETHE ROTATING BEACON HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A RED STROBE LIGHT.NO IMPACT DAMAGE TO THE COWLING OR FIBERGLASS, AS I HAVE SAID.ALL OF THE WINDOW GLASS AND WINDSHIELD IS UNDAMAGEDAS “PROJECTS” GO, THIS ONE IS VIRTUALLY THE EASIEST ONE I HAVE EVER SOLD!INSTALL YOUR CHOICE OF ENGINE, (USED, OVERHAULED OR EVEN NEW), FIX THE FLAP, INSTALL THE RADIOS YOU NEED FOR YOUR MISSION (OR WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD, OR HAVE TO HAVE).OF COURSE, IF 160 H.P. ABSOLUTELY ISN’T ENOUGH, THE ENGINE MOUNT WILL ALSO ACCEPT THE 0-360 180 H.P.
