1968 CHEROKEE 235, 2652 TT, COMPLETE AIRFRAME, NO DAMAGE, EXTRAS, NICE! THE CHEROKEE 235 WAS INTRODUCED AS PIPER’S HIGH PERFORMANCE CHEROKEE!! WITH THE SAME FUSELAGE AS THE CHEROKEE160 AND 180, BUT WITH AN EXTRA 55 H.P. OVER EVEN THE 180, THE 235’S LOAD CARRYING ABILITY (1,300 PLUS PUNDS USEFUL LOAD), CLIMB RATE AND SHORT FIELD PERFORMANCE IS LEGENDARY! IT IS ALSO THE FASTEST OF THE EARLY CHEROKEES (INTRODUCED 4 YEARS BEFORE THE ARROW). WITH IT’S SMOOTH 6 CYLINDER ENGINE AND ALL OF THAT POWER ON TAP, THE STOCK CHEROKEE 235, WHEN EQUIPPED WITH THE CONSTANT SPEED HARTZELL PROP, IS AS FAST AS THE FIRST ARROWS (AND YOU NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT LANDING GEAR UP!) IN FACT, THE IDEA OF ADDING MORE HORSEPOWER TO AN OTHERWISE SIMILAR FUSELAGE WAS SO POPULAR, THE OTHER AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURERS DID IT TOO. ONE OF THE CURRENT EXAMPLES IS THE CIRRUS SR-22, WHICH IS LITTLE MORE THAN THE 310 H.P. VERSION OF THEIR FIRST AIRPLANE, THE 210 H.P. SR-20. THE SR-20 WOULD NEVER HAVE MADE CIRRUS A BIG DEAL, BUT MORE HORSEPOWER IN THE SAME AIRPLANE MADE A SURE FIRED WINNER. THE STOCK 235 WITH THE HARTZELL PROP WILL CRUISE AT 135 KNOTS (155 MPH) AND WITH IT’S LONG RANGE FUEL CAPACITY (84 GALLONS), YOU CAN GO FOR UP TO 6 HOURS THAT FAST! BUT THIS IS FAR FROM A STOCK 235! IN FACT, IT HAS MOST ALL OF THE GO-FAST GOODIES YOU CAN ADD! LAMINAR FLOW SYSTEMS OFFERS A COMPLETE KIT TO IMPROVE BOTH THE CRUISE SPEED AND SLOW SPEED HANDLING. THIS AIRCRAFT HAS THE WHOLE KIT: FANCY PANTS, A FAR MORE AERODYNAMIC WHEELPANT THAN STOCK, WHICH ALSO COVERS THE STRUT. LAMINAR FLOW CLAIMS A 10 MPH INCREASE IN CRUISE OVER STOCK WITH JUST THIS ONE IMPROVEMENT! FLAP GAP SEALS, FOR EXTRA CRUISE SPEED FLAP HINGE FAIRINGS, SMOOTH OUT THE FACTORY TURBULANT AIRFLOW. EVERY FAST AIRPLANE I KNOW OF USES FLAP HINGE FAIRINGS! AILERON GAP SEALS, INCREASES SPEED IN CRUISE, BUT JUST AS IMPORTANTLY THEY INCREASE AILERON EFFECTIVENESS AT LOW SPEEDS, FOR BETTER LANDING CONTROL FUEL TANK SCREW COVER STRIPS, SMOOTH AIRFLOW OVER THE WING (TOP AND BOTTOM) INCREASING CRUISE SPEED! LAMINAR FLOW DOES NOT MAKE A CLAIM AS TO THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF ALL OF THEIR MODS COMBINED (SMART, AS THE IMPROVEMENTS WILL VARY BETWEEN THE 140, 160, 180 AND 235), BUT MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THESE MODS IS THAT THIS AIRPLANE, WITH ALL THE MODS, WILL BE FASTER THAN ANY STANDARD NORMALLY ASPIRATED ARROW BUILT! (THAT’S 140 KNOTS, 161 MPH, AND THIS AIRPLANE SHOULD EXCEED THAT SPEED!) MY OWN FATHER FLEW ARROWS FOR YEARS, BUT ONCE HE WAS INTRIDUCED TO A 235, HIS FAVORITE CHEROKEE BECAME A 1968 235! THE FORMER OWNER OF THIS AIRPLANE FLEW AND ENJOYED IT FOR MANY YEARS, UNTIL HE HAD AN ISSUE THAT CAUSED HIM TO LOSE HIS MEDICAL FOR A WHILE. THE LAST FLIGHT OF THIS AIRPLANE WAS IN LATE 2014! AN OBVIOUS SPEED FREAK, HE WAS BUILDING A FAST HOMEBUILT AT THE TIME AND HAD THE IDEA TO PUT THIS ENGINE AND PROP ON THAT, SINCE HE WASN’T FLYING THE 235 ANYWAY. SO HE REMOVED THE ENGINE FROM THE MOUNT, PROP AND ALL, AND LEFT THE AIRPLANE SITTING THERE IN THE HANGER. AFTER A COUPLE MORE YEARS HE DECIDED TO TAKE SOME OF THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS AND THE RADIOS OUT FOR HIS PROJECT AS WELL. AND THERE IT SAT, PROTECTED, BUT UNUSED. THIS GENTLEMAN RECENTLY PASSED, AND HIS WIDOW SOLD THE AIRPLANE TO ME. ONCE WE SAW HOW NICE THE AIRPLANE IS, THE THOUGHT OF PARTING IT OUT WAS GONE! THIS IS AN UNDAMAGED AIRPLANE! NO HAIL, NO VISIBLE CORROSION ISSUES, NOT EVEN HANGER RASH! WITH ONLY 2,652 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW, THIS IS A VERY LOW TIME AIRPLANE! NOT USED FOR TRAINING (MOST 235’S WERE NOT), BUT I HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME IN THE 235 AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT ANYONE WHO CAN FLY A 180 CAN FLY A 235! 1964 WAS THE BIGGEST PRODUCTION YEAR FOR 235’S, SO MOST PEOPLE’S EXPOSURE TO THEM COMES FROM THE 1964 AIRPLANES, WHICH ARE FINE FROM A PERFORMANCE ASPECT(ALTHOUGH MANY 1964 235’S HAVE A FIXED PITCH PROP BECAUSE THEY WERE CHEAPER. THE 235 NEEDS THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE CONSTANT SPEED PROP TO CLIMB AT 1,200 FEET PER MINUTE, TAKEOFF ON THE SHORT, HIGH STRIPS AND STILL DO 136 KNOTS IN CRUISE!) UNFORTUNATELY, THE 1964 AND ANY CHEROKEE BUILT BEFORE 1968 IS LOW ON WHAT I WOULD CALL THE “MODERN” SCALE! EARLY CHEROKEES IN GENERAL, INCLUDING THE 235, HAD A VERY POOR DASH LAYOUT, NO TOEBRAKES, LIMITED VISIBILITY TO THE REAR AND A TALL REAR SEAT THAT MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCESS THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT IN FLIGHT (NO WAY TO GET AT THE PICNIC BASKET!!!!!) ALMOST ALL OF THESE ERGONOMIC AND COMFORT ISSUES WERE SOLVED WITH THE INTRODUCTION IN 1968 OF THE NEW DASH AND 3 SIDE WINDOW CHEROKEES! THE 140 STAYED THE SAME, BUT THE 180 AND THE 235 SHARED ALL OF THE IMPROVEMENTS WHICH HAD THEIR DEBUT IN THE NEW FOR ’68 ARROW! THERE ARE OVER 100 CHANGES IN THE 235 FOR 1968, BUT SOME OF THE MAJOR ITEMS INCLUDE: NEW 3 SIDE WINDOW PROFILE, WHICH FILLS THE CABIN WITH LIGHT, MAKES SEEING BEHIND YOU FEASIBLE AND VISUALLY LENGTHENS THE FUSELAGE, GIVING IT A MUCH “FASTER” LOOK! INSIDE, THE REAR SEAT IS CUT DOWN TO MAKE SEEING OUT OF THE REAR WINDOWS POSSIBLE, WHICH ALSO ALLOWS YOU DIRECT ACCESS TO THE REAR BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT FROM INSIDE! HELLO PICNIC BASKET! THE REAR BAGGAGE AREA HAS IT’S OWN LARGE DOOR AND WILL HOLD 200 LBS, SO IF IT FITS, IT FLIES! MY FATHER HAD A 2 PIECE 50CC MOTORCYCLE THAT HE AND MY MOTHER USED FOR TRANSPORTATION WHEREVER THEY WENT FLYING IN HIS CHEROKEE, MADE POSSIBLE BY THAT LARGE WIDE OPENING DOOR, LOW BAGGAGE FLOOR AND TALL CEILING HEIGHT! MY MOONEY, HOWEVER, HAS TROUBLE FITTING ANYTHING BIGGER THAN A SKATEBOARD! THE DASH IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE IN THE 1968 MODELS, AND YOU WILL PROBABLY RECOGNIZE IT, AS IT REMAINED THE SAME FROM 1968 TO THE LATE 1990’S, ON THE WHOLE CHEROKEE LINE! QUADRANT THROTTLE, MIXTURE AND PROP CONSOLE IS FAR BETTER THAN A PUSH PULL SETUP! CLEAN, “6 PACK” GUAGE LAYOUT, WITH ROOM FOR VOR/GLIDESLOPE INDICATORS AND A FEW EXTRAS RIGHT IN THE SAME 2 ROWS! LARGE ROCKER SWITCHES FOR A POSITIVE FEEL CONTROL THE ELECTRICS ALL CIRCUIT BREAKERS, ALL CLUSTERED NICELY IN THEIR OWN PANEL! TWO RADIO STACKS SIDE BY SIDE ALLOWED FOR ALL OF THE AVIONICS YOU COULD WANT, WHILE ALLOWING FOR A LOWER DASH WITH FAR BETTER FORWARD VISIBILITY! TOE-BRAKES BECAME STANDARD FOR THE PILOT AND MANY AIRPLANES, LIKE THIS ONE, HAVE THE OPTIONAL CO-PILOT SIDE AS WELL! IF YOU GET THE IDEA I LIKE THE 1968 AND UP CHEROKEE INTERIOR LAYOUT, YOU GUESSED CORRECTLY! IF YOU SIT IN THE NICEST ‘64 CHEROKEE AND AN AVERAGE ’68, YOU WILL WANT TO KEEP THE 1968! SO THIS IS AN UNDAMAGED 1968 235 WE HAVE THE COMPLETE AIRFRAME LOGBOOKS, FROM THE FIRST DAY IN MAY OF 1968 TO THE LAST ANNUAL IN MARCH OF 2014 (PILOTS LOGBOOK SHOWS HE FLEW THE AIRPLANE UNTIL SEPTEMBER OF 2014) AS WELL AS LOTS OF SUPPORTING PAPERWORK, SUCH AS WEIGHT AND BALANCE, 337’S, AD COMPLIANCE, AND RECEIPTS ORGANIZED BY YEAR! AND THE FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE AND BILL OF SALE! AND EVEN THE KEYS! THE AIRCRAFT HAS A WHITE UPPER, BLACK STRIPE AND MEDIUM BLUE METALLIC LOWER, WINGS AND TAIL! INSIDE, THE DARK BLUE WITH WHITE STRIPE INTERIOR IS FINE, BUT A LITTLE DATED. THE EXTERIOR PAINT IS OK, SO I AM THINKING A NICE GREY TO MATCH, BUT IF YOU LIKE THE RETRO LOOK, THE BLUE WILL DO. SEVERAL OF THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS WERE REMOVED FOR HIS NEW PROJECT, BUT NEVER INSTALLED, SO WE HAVE THE AIRSPEED, ALTIMETER, VSI, ATTITUDE INDICATOR AND D.G. WITH HEADING BUG TO GO BACK IN. THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THE DASH AND THE AVIONICS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT, WITHOUT PAYING FOR WHAT YOU DON’T! A FAST, EASY TO FLY, FIXED GEAR AIRPLANE WITH A FEW MODERN TOUCHES WOULD BE NICE! THIS AIRPLANE IS SOLD WITHOUT THE ENGINE, OR ENGINE MOUNTED ACCESSORIES. THE TUBULAR ENGINE MOUNT IS INTACT AND UNDAMAGED. ONE OF THE BOXES OF EXTRAS WE GOT WITH THE PLANE HAS LORD MOUNTS, HOSES AND SOME BAFFLING PIECES, INCLUDED. THE HARTZELL 2 BLADED PROP, SPECIAL FOR THE 235 BECAUSE IT HAS BIGGER BLADES (NOT LONGER), WAS NEVER INSTALLED ON THE HOMEBUILT AND IS INCLUDED HERE! IT HAS 656 HOURS SINCE PROP OVERHAUL, BUT THAT WAS BACK IN 1998. THE PROP SHOWS NO DAMAGE! NO SPINNER WAS FOUND SO NONE IS INCLUDED (SAME SPINNER AS ANY ARROW, 235 OR “6”) THE ENGINE IS NOT INCLUDED. THE LYCOMING 0-540 IS NOT AN UNCOMMON ENGINE. THERE ARE LOTS OF 250 H.P. COMANCHE ENGINES AROUND (8.5 COMPRESSION VS. 7.2). IN FACT, I HEARD OF SOMEONE INSTALLING A CHEROKEE “6’ 260 H.P. ENGINE ON A 235 (THE SAME PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS, BOLTS RIGHT ON), ONLY WITH HIGHER COMPRESSION RATIO PISTONS AND NO WEIGHT CHANGE. I BET THAT AIRPLANE WAS A SCREAMER!) THE 235 WAS DESIGNED WITH A LOWER THAN AVERAGE COMPRESSION RATIO TO USE THE LESS EXPENSIVE 80 OCTANE AVGAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, SO AS AS A RESULT OF IT’S LOW COMPRESSION RATIO, THE STOCK 235’S ARE FULLY CAPABLE OF USING AUTOFUEL, ABOUT THE ONLY HIGH PERFORMANCE AIRPLANE THAT CAN SAY THAT! SO USE 2 OR 3 GALLONS MORE PER HOUR THAN AN ARROW, BUT SAVE 30-50% ON FUEL COSTS TO MUCH MORE THAN COMPENSATE, AND YOU CAN CARRY 84 GALLONS INSTEAD OF THE ARROW’S 50, SO GREATER RANGE!AND NEVER WORRY ABOUT A GEAR-UP OR EXPENSIVE LANDING GEAR MAINTENANCE AGAIN! NO WONDER MY FATHER WAS A 235 FAN! I USED A 235 TO COMMUTE BETWEEN THE 2 AIRPORTS I OPERATE OUT OF FOR A SHORT TIME (UNTIL I DISCOVERED THAT COMMUTING IN AN AIRPLANE WAS NOT REALLY FASTER FOR ME) AND I SAW 1,200-1,400 FOOT PER MINUTE CLIMB WHEN LIGHTLY LOADED, SO I GUESS I AM A 235 FAN AS WELL. I LATER OWNED A DAKOTA, WHICH WASN’T FASTER, HELD LESS FUEL AND HAD A WEIRD, TROUBLE PRONE ENGINE. I PREFER A GOOD 235! BUY THIS AIRPLANE CHEAP HERE, INSTALL YOUR CHOICE OF ENGINE HORSEPOWER, AND TIME (FACTORY NEW, FACTORY REMAN, OVERHAULED OR USED, DEPENDING ON YOUR POCKETBOOK AND THE HOURS YOU EXPECT TO PUT ON IT), AND HAVE A GREAT BUSINESS OR FAMILY AIRPLANE THAT YOU DON’T FEEL STUPID FLYING SOLO, ( FLYING A CHEROKEE 6 OR A-36 BONANZA BY YOURSELF IS LIKE USING A LUMBER WAGON TO DELIVER A PIZZA, HAHA!). AND AT A PRICE THAT MAKES SENSE! LOCATED AT OUR MAIN OFFICE AT THE CRYSTAL AIRPORT (KMIC), JUST NORTH OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. PROPERLY DISASSEMBLED AND WITH THE HARDWARE BAGGED, MAKING IT EASY TO TRAILER ON AN 18-20 FOOT TRAILER.
