“Master Craftsmanship”
Make: Curtiss Hawk Model Year: 1935
Up for sale or trade is my Father-in-Laws handmade 3/4 scale 1930"s era Curtiss Hawk P-6E biplane.  He is a master craftsman in the automotive and aircraft field, a land speed record holder at Bonneville (231mph in a handmade Studebaker in 1961).  This plane was his life"s passion project for the last 30 years.   It is fabric-covered, all aluminum wheel pans, no fiberglass, construction with a 24" wingspan, covered and painted with the famous Snow Owl (see pics). He used an all aluminum Olds 265"ci block (1961-63 era) with custom intake, headers and exhaust with a Bendix carb, Corvair oil cooler and other superior details.  Total unit weighs approx 1300lbs and will have approx 185hp with the all aluminum setup. Plane can be sold with or without this engine.  Buyer wanting to complete this lightweight, high performance build will need to have a reduction gear fabricated to mate to the Olds engine and a new prop.  Then, install the custom made accessory case (see pics) and connect oil, water and fuel pumps.  Buyer wanting to go cheap and easier can swap out for a Small Block Chevy crate motor. Plane comes with no paperwork so buyer can register as a home build under his direction/maint and begin logging without restriction.   The original model was build in the early 30"s for the US Army Air Corps and only 1 of them remains in existence.   Shipping and transport is the buyer"s responsibility.   Thanks for looking.  Feel free to contact me with questions. Here are some additional technical details from inquiries: Has the plane ever flown? NO. IT IS NOT COMPLETE YET.  ITS A HOME BUILT AIRPLANE.  THE BUYER WOULD BE GETTING SOMETHING TO WORK ON. A PROJECT TO FINISH. When was the last time the engine was started? THE OLDS ENGINE IS INCOMPLETE, STILL NEEDS ACCESSORY CASE AND REDUCTION GEAR FINISHED Is it designed for a constant speed prop?  NO. GROUND ADJUSTABLE PROP. I see a manifold pressure gauge on the panel]] YES. Does he have a prop-- or the S/N of a prop specified? NO PROP YET.  DESIGNED FOR GROUND ADJUSTABLE PROP. What gear reduction unit did the builder want to install? 1.66 to 1. Fuel capacity? 28 GALLONS. Were the plans store-bought, or was it all designed by your father in law?  HE SCALED (.75) FROM WILLIAM WYLAM FULL SIZED PLANS. P-6E PLANS. Did the builder do any weight and balance test yet? NO BECAUSE NOT YET COMPLETE. Is the oil cooler hooked-up? NO BECAUSE LINES STILL NEED TO BE ROUTED. Is that a supercharger on top of the intake manifold? NO.  ITS JUST THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.   Is there enough room in front of the cockpit to install another seat? NO.  ITS A SINGLE SEAT FIGHTER.  The gas tank is in the fuselage and is made of aluminum. The fuselage is made with 4130 tubing. All the controls except the rudder are both bell-crank and push rod.  The rudder is cable operated. The tail wheel is steerable with rudder. There is a mock-up engine in the airplane now (to construct accessories).  The Olds engine is on an engine stand, but is incomplete. It is electric start. There is no trim tab, the stabilizer moves. Ailerons are on the top wing only. Toe brakes actuate the brakes on the main gear.  The brakes are Cessna 182. The wings are aircraft spruce spars and marine plywood wing ribs (67).  Airplane covered in ceconite  (Ray Stits)  - lifetime. There"s an A & P mechanic on site. The eight exhaust pipes are functional (stainless steel). ***Please note: This is an unfinished homebuilt project built by EAA member #14778.  It is NOT airworthy at point of sale and requires completion of engine, accessory case, and reduction gear ( or if this is too complicated to complete as designed, a stock Oldsmobile engine can be installed instead.) No propeller included.
