You are looking at a 1972 Pitts S1-S with a 180 horsepower engine. This plane was built and flown first in 1972 with an 0-290 engine. It was actually flown competitively for a period of time. In 1976 the plane was flown to the Pitts factory which was located in homestead Florida at that time. The plane was stripped down, sent back down the line and refurbished. The engine that is now on it, which is a ported and polished o-360 was installed. Inverted fuel and oil by christen was added. The plane was issued a new certificate of airworthiness at that time, And sold to another competitive aerobatic pilot. As far as I can tell, three competitive airshow pilots have flown this particular plane in competition. With the four ailerons and the S1-S wing, the plane is a very capable aircraft. The owner that we purchased the plane from flew it regularly for some time. Tragically, his son lost his life in an accident in another aircraft in the early to mid 90"s. Unable to handle the loss, the owner closed the hangar doors, and the planes have languished unused since then. Some months ago the airport decided to renovate the hangars and requested that he move the planes. Unable to move them, he asked me if I wanted them. When we opened the doors, it was akin to opening a time capsule. Everything was in its place, having not been touched since the passing of the son. It was really cool pulling them outside into the sun for the first time in so many years. The first order of business was to assess the condition of the fabric. using a Maule punch tester on the wings, tail cone area, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and control surfaces, we found that the fabric was good on the plane. The rudder will need to be recovered as it has some punctures and slits in some places. I believe that someone got careless around it. The bungees will need to replaced. The paint was in amazing condition, which made sense as it has been protected by a quarter of an inch of dust!! We put a few gallons of avgas in the tank with no leaks or stains. The engine was boroscope inspected and the cylinder walls looked good with no rust issues. We filled them with marvel mystery oil and let them sit for some time. After cleaning them out and cleaning the plugs{ which looked brand new} we attempted to start the plane. It took some coaxing but managed to get it running for a short period of time. It will not run without help as the carburetor needs to be rebuilt. When it does run it is strong with good compression. I don"t believe there is anything needed to the engine except the carburetor itself. It does have an alternator and battery.Aircraft has 1500 hours total time and the engine has 750 since major overhaul.
