Plans SE5 / SE5A project for sale. Approximately 7/8 scale of the Royal
Aircraft Factory fighter originally produced for service in the First World War. The Replica Plans aircraft is a proven configuration designed by Gogi Goguillot and Dan McGowan in
1969, and FAA certified in 1970. The original prototypes were flown to Oshkosh
in 1971 and received “Best All Wood Biplane” award. The plans became available
shortly thereafter and examples are now flying in several countries across the
globe. The aircraft construction is basic wood and fabric, but the plans incorporate some modern construction techniques. The wing features an aluminum leading edge, and the fuselage is plywood, with fabric on the turtledeck and aluminum
cowling forward of the cockpit. It will accept several type engines, typically in the
65-125hp range. Replica Plans estimated construction time to be around 2500
hours. I have owned four of these planes, one of which is currently flying out of Ryan Field near Tucson (see last three images). They are a sturdy platform, a pleasure to fly, and they have
no bad habits. This aircraft is well along in construction and has many, if not
most, of the parts and materials necessary to complete it, including new instruments. There
it still enough work to be done, however, that the individual finishing the
fabrication and assembly would qualify for a “Builder’s Waiver” when performing
annual inspections. The project came to me several years ago with the four wings and
tail sections already completed by an experienced aircraft builder. The
fuselage was fabricated by myself and the legendary Roy McCaldin before he
passed away in 2009. The top wing center section was donated from a flying SE5A
and already has the reserve tank in place. The project includes a running Lycoming
0-235 engine, a spare starter, at least two full sets of plans, and a considerable number of spare SE5A parts collected over the years (some good, some bad, some ugly…) The built
sections have been in continuous hanger storage in Tucson, Arizona for the past 8 years. I"m familiar with the design, the plans, and the construction,
and spoke with Gogi many times about modifications to the plans, including a revised firewall and seating station bulkhead. This is not a high-tech
build and does not require an aerospace engineering degree to understand or put
together. Its configuration qualifies it for certification as a Light Sport aircraft. Please give me a call at 520 250 7027 if you have any interest or
questions, would like to request additional pictures, or want to discuss an
offer. I am not looking to make a profit or recoup my investment, but it"s important to me to find the
project a home where it will be finished and flown. To be clear - the last three images are of another completed SE5A in a nearby hangar, not the project for sale. • Length: 18 ft 2 in (5.54 m) • Wingspan: 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) • Height: 7 ft 8 in (2.34 m) • Empty weight: 750 lb (341 kg) • Gross weight: 1150 lb (522 kg) • Powerplant: Lycoming 0-235 100 hp • Maximum speed: 110 mph (176 km/h) • Range: 250 miles (400 km) • Service ceiling: 10,000 ft (3048 m) • Rate of climb: 900 ft/min ( m/s)
