Make: Stits Playboy Model Year: 1962
Designed at about the same time as the Experimental Aircraft Association was being organized in Wisconsin (a couple of Stits Playboys were present at the first EAA fly in) designer Ray Stits organized the first EAA Chapter and went on to design and market the most successful aircraft fabric covering business in the world. Built on Long Island New York and first flown in 1962, this aircraft has a bit over 500 hours total time. At time of installation, O-290 Lycoming GPU engine was estimated by professional aircraft engine shop on Eastern Long Island to have approximately 100 hours. The engine is completely converted using an O-320 accessory housing to allow crankshaft ventilation at the tach drive which allowed the vacuum pump pad to be used for vacuum pump (rather than crankcase ventilation). Engine has had top overhaul 10 hours ago made necessary by infrequent operation. Empty weight 1,039 lbs.. Approximately 25 gal. fuel capacity in all aluminum tank good for 3 hours with reserve. Aircraft underwent extensive renovation in 1995-1996 and included the following refinements: New fuel tank with electric gauge, new instrument panel and complete recowling, new prop spinner, turtle deck reshaped and recovered, new nav lights, new stainless steel exhaust system, heated pitot, cabin heat, new radio installations and new flight instruments including heading indicator, attitude indication, VSI, electric turn coordinator in addition to standard flight instruments. Aircraft may be operated with or without clamshell entry doors. Indicates 120 MPH at 2300RPM. GPS usually indicates less. Familiarization flights for delivery pilot included. Delivery pilot should have a private pilot rating or better with tail-wheel endorsement. Owner for last 43 years is (now retired) aerospace engineer. Renovation was conducted mainly by my then best friend Leonard Neimi, Soaring Hall of Fame designer and builder of the Sisu sailplane. All maintenance and mods since my purchase in 1972 conducted by aircraft professionals. New owner will be required to sign release of liability. FAA Airworthiness Certificate is in Experimental category; there is no guarantee that airplane meets the requirements for Experimental Light Sport Airplane.
