This is the second tcraft I have owned & when I saw it & how clean it was (as well as the price) I had to have it. We haven"t been flying it as much as she deserves though & we are looking at buying a property which takes precedence. I/ we are a small aircraft maintenance shop in the northern adirondacks with a combined 47 years of experience. I can say from experience that this aircraft is very nice. The airframe was restored in "88 at which time many new parts were procured from Taylorcraft. The instruments were overhauled & all look fresh. The tach quit on me while flying the other day & has been pulled & shipped out for repair. The airframe was covered in Ceconite with pigmented dope in the original Diana cream & Bahama blue. New airtex seats and baggage sling were installed as well as a factory exhaust & cooling baffles. All new glass was also installed. When I bought the plane I saw the potential, but it needed a little tlc so I got it home & did what I call a 1 month restoration. I pulled the wings & rejuvenated the fabric. It came out beautiful & looks like a fresh recover. I bought new Alaska Airframes wing struts & painted them to match with 3 coats of quality urethane automotive paint. The engine got new intake gaskets & seals, new fuel hoses, updated primer system, lubed fuel on/off valve, new bracket air filter assy. & cleaned fuel screens. I also installed new bungees. At this time the plane got signed off for an annual. It is currently signed off for September. The plane is tight & flies hands off. There is no wobble in the tailwheel & all the control surfaces are as they should be. The engine starts reliably on the first pull. This plane will be sold with a fresh annual & shouldn"t need anything in the foreseeable future. Logbooks go back to "51. There is a float kit installed on the airframe but I don"t believe floats were ever installed. The one item that I have been putting off doing is a headliner. I wasn"t sure if I should put one in, or install a skylight. Right now it"s open, which gives much more headroom & a more open feel. The look & feel never really bothered me so I wasn"t very motivated to change it. This is a very nice Taylorcraft. I don"t expect you or anyone will find one nicer for the money. The plane has wing tanks, they don"t leak, & no foreign material. They work as they should. I believe it was always hangared, but I have no way of knowing for sure. I haven"t seen anything that would make me think it spent any significant time outside. Last compressions were 1) 78, 3) 77, 2) 78, 4) 76/80. Proper inspection & prep, prime (zinc chromate), was done before cover. She is very clean & correct inside. The wings look beautiful inside as well. 341 hrs since "88. All ADs are complied with. It has auto fuel STC, but I only use avgas & suggest the same to all of my customers. I don"t believe anything has been done to push the plane outside of the light sport category. It weighs 762 empty. Gross weight is 1200. Useful load is 438. |
