An opportunity to "advance" your position in line and possibly receive your Transition road-legal airplane (or, as some like to think of it, a flying car), a year or so earlier than if you reserve one now directly from Terrafugia. For sale is Certificate of Deposit, number 117, reserved in September of 2010, very close to when Terrafugia began accepting reservations. Transitions will be delivered to reservation holders based on the order in which they purchased their Certificates of Deposit. Production is projected to begin in 2016. Owning this Certificate will put you close to the front of the line. (Terrafugia has agreed to allow the sale and transfer of Certificates of Deposit, honoring their "place" in line.) Please remember that you are purchasing a Certificate of Deposit, which is a down payment. The balance of the purchase price must be paid to Terrafugia before you may take delivery.
Terrafugia was founded by a team of MIT graduates. Their goal was to design and manufacture a vehicle that converts from street-legal automobile to Light Sport aircraft in 30 seconds. The 4 cylinder 100 hp engine powers both the three-bladed propeller, achieving a maximum airspeed of 115 mph, and a continuously variable transmission propelling the rear-wheel drive to over 65 mph on the road.
When the wings are folded, the Transition easily stores in a standard home garage. A fully automated electro-mechanical system, which is activated from the cockpit, deploys the self-locking wings, as well as folds them into storage position to drive on the road.
A minimum runway length of 1,700 feet is required. The Transition may be flown in VFR conditions, and the cockpit features state-of-the-art glass avionics and navigation. There are dual flying controls, and standard driving controls (accelerator, brake pedal, steering wheel) for the driver when on the ground.
The Transition has a 23 gallon gas tank, which provides for an approximate 425 nautical mile flying range. It gets about 35 miles to the gallon on the road.
