Currently, more than 23,000 amateur-built/home-built aircraft are licensed by the FAA. While some of these are truly "home-built" by individuals, others, such as the SparrowHawk, are built from proven, carefully engineered kits with an established safety record. The award winning SparrowHawk, with its centerline-thrust design, has been featured by much of the aviation media, including the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), and Popular Rotorcraft Association (PRA). I built this kit from the parts, diagrams and instructions provided by American Autogyro. The kit infrastructure was completed to the 51% per the rule for experimental aircraft. I transported the gyro to Buckeye, Arizona, the Groen Brothers test facility, where the avionics and some upgrades were completed. When complete and the weight and balance had been accomplished, the airworthiness was signed off and the first 40 hours were flown off to complete the build process. In this sense the gyro was basically turn-key to me when delivered. I returned the gyro to Long Beach,CA , where it has been stored at Long Beach Airport. I was recruited to be a sales rep for American Autogyro, however, by the time I completed the gyro, Groen Bros. and American Autogyro had declined and decided not to go ahead with the product. No product, no sales, no business. Although I had started pilot training, I never put in the hours to complete the training and never got my pilots license. Therefore,the gyro has not flown since it was completed. I fully intended to complete my training, but due to many reasons, it hasn’t happened. It was hangered for seven years and transferred outdoors to a tarmac tiedown only recently. Since it has not flown for a while, it will need some tlc.
