1960 PIPER PA-24-250 COMANCHE, 250 H.P. LYCOMING 6 CYLINDER, BOTTOM FUSELAGE DAMAGE ONLY, CHEAP !!
THE 250 COMANCHE IS THE ORIGINAL GO FAST FOR CHEAP AIRPLANE !!
155 TO 160 KNOTS. IN A TRUE 4 PLACE AIRPLANE, WITH BAGGAGE SPACE, AND ENOUGH USEFUL LOAD TO CARRY THEM !!
PARTS ARE READILY AVAILABLE AND INEXPENSIVE, SO THEY ARE EASY TO MAINTAIN.
AND THEY ARE A PLEASANT, PREDICTABLE CROSS COUNTRY AIRPLANE, WITH GOOD MANNERS IN TURBULENCE.
BUT, WHEN YOU LAND, IT IS BETTER TO PUT THE LANDING GEAR DOWN !!!
THIS AIRPLANE LANDED ON A DIRT STRIP, BUT THE PILOT FORGOT TO LOWER THE ELECTRIC GEAR.
SO THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE BELLY, (SCRAPED AND DENTED SOMEWHAT), BUT NOT AS BAD AS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A HARD SURFACE RUNWAY !
YOU CAN SEE THE SCRAPES ON THE BELLY SKINS, AFT OF THE NOSE GEAR WELL AND FORWARD OF THE TAILCONE.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE PEOPLE THAT RESPONDED TO PICK THE AIRPLANE UP AND TRANSPORT IT WERE NOT EXPERIENCED, AND THEY DID DAMAGE TO THE TAILCONE (UNDER THE N NUMBERS) WITH A STRAP, AND TO THE LOWER COWL (SLIGHT), AND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD ON THE LEFT SIDE.
WHEN THEY DID GET IT LIFTED, THE GEAR CAME DOWN FINE, AND ALL 3 LANDING GEAR ARE UNDAMAGED, INCLUDING THE DOUBLE PUCK DISC BRAKE CALIPERS
IN FACT THE ONLY DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME BESIDES THE BELLY IS A SCUFF (NOT A DENT) TO THE LEFT WING LEADING EDGE, AND A SLIGHT TEAR AROUND THE OPENING ON THE SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE ON THE RIGHT SIDE (SHOWN IN PHOTOS).
WE NOTED THAT THE WEB OF THE LEFT WING SPAR EXTENSION IS SLIGHTLY "WOWED". WE HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE, WHEN EXCESS FORCE IS USED DURING WING REMOVAL, BUT IT PUSHES BACK INTO PLACE WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF FORCE IN REVERSE, SO I DON"T BELIEVE IT IS A CONCERN, BUT WANTED YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT.
THE RUDDER AND HORIZONTALS ARE UNDAMAGED, AND BOTH THE RUDDER AND STABS HAVE THE BALANCE WEIGHTS INSTALLED.
THE AIRFRAME LOGBOOKS ARE COMPLETE FROM DAY 1 IN 1960!
TOTAL AIRFRAME TIME IS
THE LYCOMING 0-540 LOGS ARE COMPLETE BACK TO A FACTORY REMANUFACTURE IN 1973.
THE LAST MAJOR OVERHAUL WAS 10/2000, AND IT WAS A GOOD ONE !!
JOHNSTON AIRCRAFT DID THE OVERHAUL TO ALL FACTORY NEW TOLERANCES.
ALL 6 CYLINDERS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW LYCOMING CYLINDERS
HEAVY COUNTERWEIGHTS WERE ADDED, TO ALLOW FOR USE OF A HARTZELL "COMPACT" PROP (HCC-2Y-----)
EVEN MORE RECENTLY, THE MAGS WERE OVERHAULED, AS WAS THE CARBURETOR.
THE LAST COMPRESSIONS SHOWN IN THE LOGBOOK WERE FANTASTIC AT 78/78/76/74/76/78 !
THIS ENGINE DID SUSTAIN A LOW POWER PROP STRIKE IN THIS INCIDENT.
THE PROP WAS REMOVED FOR TRANSPORT AND MISPLACED (STOLEN?), SO IT IS NOT INCLUDED HERE.
THE ENGINE HAS THE LATE STYLE OIL FILTER ADAPTER, AND THE AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR/OIL SEPERATOR
THE ENGINE PHYSICALLY LOOKS VERY GOOD, AND CLEAN.
INSIDE, THE SEATS MAY BE ORIGINAL, BUT PROBABLY THEY ARE AN OLDER RECOVER, IN RED, WITH WHAT I WOULD CALL A "BOLD" PATTERN CLOTH INSERT.
AFTERMARKET SHOULDER HARNESS ASSEMBLIES HAVE BEEN ADDED FOR SAFETY.
ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT (BUT OPTIONAL) HEADRESTS FOR THE FRONT SEATS.
THE DASH IS COMPLETE WITH ALMOST ALL OF THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS INSTALLED:
