THE AZTEC IS A 4 TO 6 PLACE LIGHT TWIN, WITH A REPUTATION FOR RUGGED RELIABILITY, IF NOT GORGEOUS GOOD LOOKS !!
A DERIVATIVE OF THE EARLIER APACHE, WHICH WAS NICKNAMED THE FLYING POTATO, WHICH IS NOT A FLATTERING VISUAL PICTURE.
THE FIRST AZTECS GOT 250 H.P. LYCOMING 6 CYLINDER ENGINES, AN THEY WERE STRETCHED OUT INSIDE, WITH A LARGE, AIRY CABIN, LARGE SEPARATE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT IN THE REAR, BETTER WINDSHIELD ANGLE, AND MODERN SQUARED OFF TAIL.
THIS IS A "B MODEL, WHICH ADDED A LONGER NOSE, WHICH ALLOWED FOR A FORWARD BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT AS WELL.
IN ADDITION TO THE EXTRA STORAGE SPACE, THE ABILITY TO ADD OR SUBTRACT WEIGHT TO THE FORWARD COMPARTMENT MAKES WEIGHT AND BALANCE ISSUES A THING OF THE PAST !!
THE LONGER NOSE ALSO VISUALLY SLIMS THE AIRPLANE, MAKING THE CABIN SEEM LESS BULBOUS, AND AT LEAST SEMI-ATTRACTIVE !!
THIS AIRPLANE WAS USED FOR MANY YEARS AS AN AERIAL SURVEY AIRPLANE, SO IT HAS AN STC"D MOUNT AND LARGE HOLE IN THE MIDDLE FUSELAGE FOR A LARGE CAMERA (THE HOLE HAS A COVER PLATE FLUSH ON THE OUTSIDE, SO IT IS NOT OPEN TO THE OUTSIDE)
TOTAL AIRFRAME TIME IS 8925, NOT LOW, BUT NOT ONE OF THOSE 20,000 HOUR PLANES EITHER.
NOT USED AS A FREIGHT HAULER, SO THIS ONE HAS HAD GOOD MAINTENANCE, AND IS NOT ALL WORN OUT.
LAST ANNUAL WAS PERFORMED 9/1/2014, AND THE AIRPLANE HAS NOT BEEN USED SINCE !! (THE CONTRACT ENDED, AND THIS AIRPLANE WAS NOT REQUIRED)
STORED INSIDE SINCE THEN (UP TILL THE LAST 2 MONTHS), SO THE GLASS IS GOOD, THE PAINT IS GOOD, AND THE OVERALL APPEARANCE IS GOOD !!
IN FACT, AS I WALKED UP TO THIS PLANE, I THOUGHT IT WAS A NEW AZTEC, BECAUSE OF THE LONGER NOSE (SAME AS "C" AND "D") AND THE GOOD OVERALL CONDITION
THERE ARE SOME SCATTERED HAIL PINGS ACROSS ALL OF THE UPPER SURFACES OF THE AIRPLANE, BUT YOU HAVE TO REALLY BE RIGHT ON TOP OF IT TO NOTICE, AND IT DOES NOT OF COURSE AFFECT THE AIRPLANES FLYING ABILITY, AND NOT REALLY THE APPEARANCE.
INSIDE, THERE ARE ONLY THE 2 FRONT SEATS AND THE REAR BENCH SEATS, WITH THE MIDDLE REMOVED FOR ACCESS TO THE CAMERA. MIDDLE SEATS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET, OF COURSE, BUT I KNOW MANY PEOPLE WITH AZTECS WHO FLY WITHOUT THEM ANYWAY, AND JUST HAVE A LARGE CABIN 4 SEATER WITH PLENTY OF LEGROOM (POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF THAT FORWARD BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT, NO AFT C.G. ISSUES)
THE INSTRUMENT PANEL IS COMPLETE, AND INCLUDES LATE STYLE GYRO INSTRUMENTS, AND FULL DUAL ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION.
AVIONICS PANEL UNITS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND ARE NOT INCLUDED, BUT THE TRAYS AND WIRING ARE INCLUDED FOR A KING KMA 24 AUDIO PANEL, NARCO COMM AND KING KT-76A TRANSPONDER. THE ANTENNAS ARE STILL MOUNTED, AND THE MODE "C" ENCODER IS WIRED AND INCLUDED.
THE 0-540 A1D5 250 H.P. ENGINES ARE BOTH PAST TBO, (2312 SMOH AND 2345 SMOH, BUT BOTH HAVE BEEN WELL MAINTAINED, INCLUDING REPLACING ALMOST ALL OF THE 12 CYLINDERS WITH OVERHAULED OR NEW, AND THE LEFT ENGINE WAS TORN DOWN AND IRAN"D 1750 HOURS AGO
THE COMPRESSIONS AT THE LAST ANNUAL WERE GREAT, WITH ONLY ONE CYLINDER ON EACH ENGINE BEING BELOW 72 !!
THE FORMER OWNER REPORTED BOTH HAVE GOOD OIL PRESSURE AND MAKE GOOD POWER.
SOLD WITH FAA BILL OF SALE AND CURRENT LOGS FOR AIRFRAME, BOTH ENGINES AND BOTH PROPS.
