1969 CESSNA 177A CARDINAL,180 H.P. SUPER NICE PLANE, SUPERFICIAL DAMAGE, SUPER GOOD PRICE !!
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT THE CARDINAL IS ONE OF THE SWEETEST FLYING OF ALL CESSNAS, WITH PERFORMANCE FAR BETTER THAN THE OTHER SIMILARLY ENGINED FOUR SEAT CRUISERS !!
WITH NO LIFT STRUTS TO GET IN THE WAY, AND A LIGHTER VERSION OF THE 210"S FAST WING DESIGN, IT LOOKS BETTER AND FLIES BETTER THAN THE COMPETITION !!
BIG DOORS MAKE IT EASY TO GET IN TO BOTH THE FRONT AND BENCH BACK SEATS
LOTS OF WINDOWS FOR A PANORAMIC VIEW, WITH NO LIFT STRUTS TO SEE AROUND
MODERN DESIGN DASH, WITH PILOT-CENTRIC ERGONOMICS
FASTER THAN A 172 ON THE SAME POWER
LOWER, WIDER GEAR THAN THE 172, FOR VERY EASY INGRESS/EGRESS AND GREAT LANDINGS !!
THIS AIRPLANE HAS A VERY LOW 2874 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW !!
THE 177A MODEL, WHICH STARTED IN 1969, SOLVED THE ONLY DILEMMA FACED BY THE ORIGINAL CARDINAL, NOT ENOUGH POWER !!!
ORIGINALLY PLANNED AS A DIRECT REPLACEMENT FOR THE 172, DURING DEVELOPMENT THE CARDINAL GAINED WEIGHT, IN THE FORM OF THE REINFORCEMENTS REQUIRED TO ELIMINATE THE DRAG INDUCING LIFT STRUTS, AND IN MORE AND BETTER INTERIOR UPGRADES, LIKE THE MODERN, "SWOOPY" INSTRUMENT PANEL, MORE GLASS, AND MORE SOUND INSULATION.
THESE IMPROVEMENTS MADE THE 177 SUPERIOR TO THE 172, BUT THE DECISION TO GO WITH THE 172"S 150 H.P. LYCOMING HAD ALREADY BEEN MADE, SO AS IT TURNED OUT THE 1968 IS UNDERPOWERED, WHICH AFFECTS TAKE-OFF ROLL, CLIMB, AND CRUISE SPEED.
THE DECISION TO GO WITH THE 180 H.P. 0-360 IN THE 177A, LIKE THIS ONE, CURES THESE ILLS IN ONE SWEEP, AND MAKES THE AIRPLANE TOP OF IT"S CLASS !!
IT IS NOT ALWAYS APPARENT FROM PHOTOS WHAT THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF A PAINT JOB IS.
I JUST SAW THIS ONE, AND I WAS IMMEDIATELY IMPRESSED WITH THE LOOK
THIS IS A VERY PRETTY CARDINAL !!
PAINT IS SHINY AND RICH, OBVIOUSLY WELL CARED FOR
OVERALL WHITE, WITH 2 TONE BLUE STRIPES LOGS SHOW PAINTED IN 2001, BUT THE N NUMBER HAS BEEN CHANGED SINCE THEN, SO AT LEAST THE TAILCONE SIDES HAVE BEEN UPDATED SINCE
LOW TOTAL TIME, AS THIS IS A PERSONAL AIRPLANE, NOT A TRAINER
DASH IS CLEAN AS WELL, WITH MODERN INSTRUMENTATION
SEATS HAVE BEEN UPDATED, WITH BETTER PADDING AND BOLSTERS THAN THE FACTORY.
INTERIOR IS OLDER THAN THE PAINT, AND THE NAVY BLUE VELOUR, ALTHOUGH IT HAS NO RIPS OR TEARS, IS FADED TO MORE LIKE A PURPLE. NOT HIDEOUS, JUST NOT NEW.
PLASTICS INSIDE IS A CARDINAL BUGABOO, AND THIS AIRPLANE HAS A FEW CRACKED PIECES. NOT BAD
BOTH SEATS HAVE THE DESIRABLE VERTICALLY ADJUST FEATURE, SO YOU CAN CRANK THE SEAT UP OR DOWN TO FIT EITHER THE PILOT OR COPILOTS HEIGHT NEEDS
TOTAL AIRFRAME TIME IS 2874.8
TIME SINCE MAJOR ON THE 0-360 180 H.P.ENGINE IS 1476.3
THIS IS A 2000 HOUR T.B.O. ENGINE, AND BASICALLY REGARDED AS BULLET-PROOFLIKE ALL 177A"S, THIS AIRCRAFT IS EQUIPPED WITH A FIXED PITCH PROP. STARTING IN 1970, THE AIRCRAFT WAS FITTED WITH A CONSTANT SPEED PROP. IF THIS WOULD BE INTERESTING TO YOU, KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS ENGINE ORIGINALLY DROVE A CONSTANT SPEED PROP, BUT HAS BEEN CONVERTED FOR FIXED PITCH. IT COULD BE CONVERTED TO CONSTANT SPEED WITHOUT SPLITTING THE CASE, BASICALLY BY ADDING A PROP GOVERNOR.
THE AIRPLANE RECEIVED IT"S LAST ANNUAL IN JUNE OF 2014, WHICH MEANS IT IS CURRENTLY IN ANNUAL, UNTIL THE END OF JUNE 2015, NOT A SITTER
WHEN DISCUSSING THIS AIRPLANE IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT I JUST SAW IT, BUT I WASN"T THERE WHEN IT BROKE THE WINGTIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHILE TAXI-ING AT HIS HOME AIRPORT, NEAR BUFFALO, N.Y., THE PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE GOT TOO CLOSE TO THE HANGER NEXT TO HIS, AND IMPACTED THE FIBERGLASS WINGTIP ON THE WALL OF THE HANGER. I KNOW I HAVE BEEN CLOSE, BUT I HAVE NEVER SUFFERED THIS PARTICULAR EMBARRASSMENT. HE KNOWS HE SHOULDN"T HAVE BEEN THAT CLOSE, OR SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAYING BETTER ATTENTION, OR SHOULD HAVE GONE OUT TO LOOK, BUT HE DIDN"T, SO THERE YOU GO.
THE ORIGINAL CARDINAL WINGTIPS WERE PLASTIC, BUT THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN UPDATED TO FIBERGLASS, WHICH HOLD UP BETTER.
AS SHOWN IN ONE OF THE ACCOMPANYING PHOTOS, THE LEADING EDGE OF THIS TIP IS CRACKED (NOT DESTROYED). THE IMPACT TO THE TIP PUT THE SMALLEST LITTLE WRINKLE ON THE FAR OUTBOARD LEADING EDGE OF THE WING SKIN, MUCH SMALLER THAN MY THUMB, AND AN ALMOST IMPERCEPTIBLE SMALL WRINKLE IIN THE OUTBOARD RIB LEADING EDGE.
THE WING ITSELF DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ACTUALLY HIT ANYTHING !!
NOW COMES THE WIERD PART.
THE OWNER PURCHASED A REPLACEMENT TIP, BUT NEVER INSTALLED IT. IT SEEMS SOMEBODY NOTICED A WRINKLE IN THE CABIN TOP SKIN, AND SO THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS CALLED.
NOW, IT GETS REALLY WEIRD !!.
HERE IS WHAT THEY FOUND:
THERE IS A WRINKLE, ABOUT IN THE CENTER OF THE SKIN THAT GOES OVER THE REAR PLEXIGLASS WINDOW. STRANGE, I ADMIT. THE GLASS IS NOT BROKEN, HOWEVER, AND, LIKE ALL OF THE GLASS, LOOKS VERY GOOD. WE THINK MAYBE SOMEONE BENT IT SLIGHTLY TRYING TO GET THE OLD WINDOW OUT, AND POUNDED IT FLAT, BUT NOT PERFECT. THERE IS NO PAINT MISSING HERE, SO IT OCCURRED BEFORE THE PAINT JOB.
THERE APPEARS TO BE A SLIGHT OIL CAN IN THE CABIN TOP JUST INBOARD OF THE RIGHT WING, BUT IT ISN"T DEEP, SHARP, OR EASY TO SEE.
THE INSPECTOR THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THERE WAS SOME INDISTINCT WAVINESS IN CERTAIN SKINS OR SKIN JOINTS ON THE RIGHT WING. WE SEE SOME DEFORMATION JUST INBOARD OF THE AILERON ATTACH POINT ON THE WING TOP, SHOWN
HERE IS WHERE I START TO WONDER. IS IT REASONABLE OR POSSIBLE FOR IMPACT TO THE RIGHT WING FIBERGLASS TIP TO AFFECT THE CABIN TOP, WING SKINS IN THE CENTER, AND THE SKIN OVER THE REAR WINDOW?
WHICH BRINGS ME TO THE DENT ON THE RIGHT AFT TAILCONE. THIS DENT, TO ME, APPEARS PRE-EXISTING, AS THE PAINT HAS SOME OLD CRACKS, AND AN AMATEUR HAS TRIED TO PUSH THE DENT OUT. THE INSPECTOR ADDED IT TO THE LIST, BUT IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO TIE THIS TO THE WINGTIP !!!!THE SAME GOES FOR THE PATCHES IN THE BELLY(PAINTED WITH THE AIRPLANE IN 2001), THE MISC SMALL WRINKLES IN THE TAILCONE LOWER,(PAINTED OVER), AND THE PATCH IN THE TAILCONEI SUSPECT THAT THESE AREAS ARE REMNANTS OF A REPAIR TO DAMAGE SUSTAINED IN A 1988 INCIDENT, NOT FROM THE WINGTIP CRACK, BUT THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER NEVER SAW THE AIRPLANE, AND WENT BY THE INSPECTORS LIST OF DAMAGE, WHICH I THINK INCLUDED NOT 1, BUT 2 KITCHEN SINKS !!!REMEMBER, I NEVER SAW THE AIRPLANE BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, BUT MAN, IT"S HARD TO FATHOM HOW ALL OF THIS IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BUT THE WINGTIP-ONLY IMPACT.
REGARDLESS OF HOW, OR WHEN THESE ITEMS OCCURRED, IT CERTAINLY SEEMS LIKE A PATIENT PERSON COULD MESSAGE THE FEW DENTS IN THE FUSELAGE AND THE TINY AREA OF THE RIGHT WING, PATCH OR REPLACE THE RIGHT WINGTIP, AND HAVE A FLYABLE AIRPLANE !!WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE DAMAGE I LISTED, THIS IS NOT A DAMAGED AIRPLANE !!!
NO ENGINE OR PROP DAMAGE !!
NO LANDING GEAR DAMAGE
NO CONTROL SURFACE DAMAGE
LOGBOOKS FOR AIRFRAME START IN 1972, ENGINE IN 1982, AND THEY ARE INCLUDED UP TO THE PRESENT, AS WELL AS THE FAA BILL OF SALE. AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE IS NOT INCLUDED (WE DIDN"T RECEIVE IT.)
I"LL BET YOU HAVE NOTICED THE HOLES IN THE DASH.
A NICE AIRPLANE LIKE THIS WAS NATURALLY VERY WELL EQUIPPED, BUT YOU DON"T GET ANY OF THE MISSING STUFF (EVERYTHING SHOWN, INCLUDING ALL FLIGHT AND ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION, ELT, ENCODER, ETC. ARE INSTALLED, AS SHOWN, AND INCLUDED.)
I BELIEVE IN LETTING AN AIRPLANE STAND ON IT"S OWN, SO THE AVIONICS ARE NOT INCLUDED. THESE UNITS ARE AVAILABLE, FROM US OR OTHERS, NOW, OR IN THE FUTURE AS YOU DESIRE THEM.
THE TRAYS AND CONNECTORS ARE ALSO NOT INCLUDED, SO YOU WILL FREE TO CHOOSE WHATEVER YOU WANT, NOT BE STUCK WITH SOMEONE ELSE"S CHOICES. HOWEVER,
AS AN INCENTIVE TO HIT THE BUY IT NOW, WE WILL INCLUDE THE CONNECTORS, INSTALLED AND WIRED, AND CERTIFIED, IN THE AIRPLANE, IF YOU USE THE BUY IT NOW!!!
THESE CONNECTORS INCLUDE PMA-8000B AUDIO PANEL (WHICH PROVIDES INTERCOM AND MARKER BEACONS), GARMIN 430WAAS , GAMIN SL-40 DIGITAL COMM, AND GARMIN GTX-330 TRANSPONDER WITH TRAFFIC.
LEAVING THESE CONNECTORS AND WIRING MAKES REINSTALLATION IN THE FUTURE A SLIDE-IN AFFAIR, WITH NO WIRING AND NO PAPERWORK. SAVE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AT THE RADIO SHOP !!!!!
A BUDGET WAY TO GET THE AIRPLANE FLYING FAST WOULD BE THE AUDIO, TRANSPONDER AND COMM FOR NOW, AND ADD THE 430WAAS LATER, WHEN YOU WANT.
THE AIRPLANE ALSO HAS AN EXTERNAL ANTENNA AND POWER WIRING FOR A GARMIN HANDHELD GPS WHICH THE FORMER OWNER KEPT. WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT DOES NOT OBTAIN REPAIR ESTIMATES, AS WE DO NOT REPAIR ANY OF OUR AIRPLANES. WE ONLY FACILITATE THE SALE OF REBUILDABLE AIRCRAFT TO THOSE DESIRING TO SAVE MONEY OR HAVE MORE AIRPLANE THAN OTHERWISE POSSIBLE FOR THE MONEY. REPAIR OF ANY AIRCRAFT WILL DEPEND ON MANY FACTORS, SUCH AS AVAILABILITY OF USED PARTS, LABOR RATE OF THE REPAIR FACILITY, FAMILIARITY WITH THE AIRCRAFT, ETC. AND WE WOULD NEVER PRESUME TO ESTIMATE THIS NUMBER FOR A BUYER. BEWARE OF THOSE WHO OBVIOUSLY GIVE UNREALISTICALLY LOW "ESTIMATES" FOR THE REPAIR OF THE DAMAGED AIRCRAFT THEY SELL. THIS ITEM IS BEING SOLD WITH A LOW RESERVE, THEREFORE WE FULLY EXPECT THIS LISTING WILL SELL TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER AT THE CLOSE OF THIS AUCTION, SO BID EARLY AND BID HIGH. THERE WILL BE NO CHANCE TO BUY THIS ITEM LATER!! AS WE SET OUR BUY-IT-NOW SO LOW, MANY OF OUR AIRPLANES SELL BY THIS METHOD BEFORE THE END OF THE AUCTION.
