THE CHEROKEE 140 WAS NEVER REALLY A 140!
AS THE CHEROKEE WAS FIRST RELEASED IN 150 H.P., 160 H.P. AND 180 H.P. VARIANTS, ALL WITH THE EXACT SAME FUSELAGE CONFIGURATION, WHEN PIPER DECIDED TO MAKE A “TRAINER’ VERSION, WITHOUT AN OUTSIDE BAGGAGE DOOR AND WITH REMOVABLE BUCKET SEATS IN THE REAR, BUT WITH THE SAME 150 H.P. ENGINE S THE EXISTING 150, THEY ‘INVENTED” THE 140 NAME!
IT’S OK, CESSNAS MODEL NUMBERS DON’T MEAN ANYTHING EITHER.
SO ALL CHEROKEE 140’S CAME FROM THE FACTORY WITH 150 H.P. 0-320 ENGINES, BUT NOT ALL CHEROKEE 140’S ARE THE SAME!!
IN 1969, (LIKE THE AIRPLANE FOR SALE HERE), PIPER GAVE THE 140 THE SAME DASH UPGRADE THE 180 HAD RECEIVED IN 1968.
IF YOU HAVE READ SOME OF MY PREVIOUS POSTS, YOU MAY KNOW THAT I WAS RAISED ON CHEROKEES AND I BELIEVE THE QUADRANT THROTTLE STYLE DASH LAYOUT TO BE THE BEST IN LIGHT GENERAL AVIATION.
THE QUADRANT THROTTLE ALLOWS EASY FINE ADJUSTMENTS, THE VISUAL AND PHYSICAL CONFIRMATION OF WHERE THE POWER IS SET, AND LOOKS AND FELLS BETTER!
THE 6 PACK GUAGE LAYOUT IS CLEAN AND MODERN, THE ROCKER SWITCHES ARE CENTRALLY LOCATED, CIRCUIT BREAKERS IN THIER OWN PANEL AND EASY TO READ STRIP GUAGES.
TWO CENTER RADIO STACKS WILL ACCEPT ANYTHING YOU SHOULD WANT IN A 140!
BETTER FRONT SEATS BY 1969 TOO, SO THE AIRPLANE LOOKS MORE MODERN AND IS NICER TO BE IN.
THE 140 IS A GREAT TRAINER, SO IF YOU PLAN TO BUY AN AIRPLANE TO LEARN TO FLY IN, TEACH YOUR KIDS OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER TO FLY, OR JUST BUILD TIME, I RECOMMEND THE 140 AS A GREAT AIRPLANE TO DO IT IN!!
THIS IS A FAR NICER THAN AVERAGE 1969 140, OUTSIDE, INSIDE AND MECHANICALLY!
OUTSIDE, THE RED AND BLUE ACCENTS ARE NOT BORING DULL RED ORIGINALS, NOT AVANT-GARDE MODERN ART, JUST FUN IMPROVEMENTS ON THE NORMAL SCHEME.
THE WINGTIPS ARE THE IMPROVED METCO STYLE, WHICH ADDS CRUISE SPEED AND LOW SPEED CONTROL, BUT MOSTLY THEY LOOK BETTER AND MORE LIKE A WARRIOR WING THAN A HERSHEY BAR!
THESE TIPS HAVE NICE MATCHING PAINT STRIPES AS WELL.
INSIDE IS A REAL TREAT!
THIS IS A VERY NICELY DONE, VERY CUSTOM INTERIOR!
4 BUCKET SEATS (OPTIONAL ON THE 140) IN A MAROON SEAT, WITH SOFT GREY CLOTH INSERTS AND WHITE PIPING!

THE SIDE PANELS MATCH THE SEATS, THE HEADLINER IS MAROON AND THE OPTIONAL HATRACK IN THE REAR IS CUSTOME COLOR MATCHED GREY AND MAROON.
THE HATRACK IS A NICE OPTION ON A 140, AS IN ADDITION TO THE UPPER SHELF, IT PUSHES THE AREA BEHIND THE SEATS BACKWARD INTO THE TAIL 12 INCHES, CREATING A STORAGE SPACE ON THE FLOOR BACK THERE FOR BAGS AND THINGS!
TOE BRAKES ARE NOT REQUIRED ON A CHEROKEE, BUT THEY ARE VERY NICE TO HAVE AND THIS AIRPLANE HAS A SET INSTALLED!
THE DASH ON THIS AIRPLANE IS VERY CLEAN AND FULL OF LATE MODEL STYLE INSTRUMENTS!
YOU WILL NOTICE THAT NO RADIOS ARE INSTALLED OR INCLUDED WITH THIS LISTING.
THERE ARE TRAYS, INSTALLED, WIRED AND INCLUDED FOR A KING KLX-135A GPS/COMM, A KING KN53 NAV AND A GARMIN 330 DIGITAL TRANSPONDER. THERE ARE ALSO CONNECTORS STILL WIRED FOR A GARMIN AUDIO PANEL.
ALTHOUGH THERE ARE NO PANEL UNITS INCLUDED, REPLACEMENTS ARE READILY AVAILABLE ON THE USED MARKET, FROM US OR OTHERS, THAT YOU COULD INSTALL WITHOUT THE NEED FOR REWIRING.
OR INSTALL WHATEVER RADIOS YOU MAY HAVE, OR WHAT YOU WANT, AND FEEL GOOD YOU DIDN"T HAVE TO PAY FOR ITEMS YOU DIDN"T WANT!
I TOLD YOU ABOUT THE 150 H.P. ENGINE BEING STANDARD ON A CHEROKEE 140.
BUT EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS AIRPLANE IS BETTER THAN STANDARD AND THIS INCLUDES THE ENGINE!!
AT THE LAST OVERHAUL, THIS ENGINE WAS UPGRADED WITH THE 160 H.P. S.T.C.!
THAT EXTRA 10 HORSEPOWER MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE 140, NOT SO MUCH ON CRUISE SPEED (ONLY A FEW MILES PER HOUR) BUT SINCE THE WEIGHT STAYS THE SAME, THE TAKEOFF IS NOTICABLY FASTER AND EASIER AND THE CLIMB RATE IS VERY OBVIOUSLY BETTER!
NO ONE WHO HAS DONE THIS CONVERSION REGRETS IT!!
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS, IN ADDITION TO BEING 160 H.P., THIS ENGINE LOOKS CLEAN, JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE AIRPLANE AND EVEN HAS SOME NICE CHROME DRESS UP ON IT!
BUT DID YOU NOTICE THE BROKEN COWLING?
THIS AIRPLANE RAN OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY ON LANDING WHEN THE PILOT LANDED LONG AND HIT A LOW MARKER SIGN AT THE END!
THE MARKER IMPACTED THE FIBERGLASS NOSEBOWL ON THE LOWER SECTION, BREAKING THE FIBERGLASS AND BENDING THE LOWER COWL METAL SLIGHTLY.
THE TOP COWL WAS NOT IMPACTED OR DAMAGED.
THE POST HIT THE STARTER, BREAKING ON EAR OFF THE STARTER, DENTED THE CASE ON THE ALTERNATOR (BUT NOT BREAKING IT), TEARING THE BAFFLING SLIGHTLY, AND PUT A FEW SCRATCHES AND 1 SMALL DENT IN THE RIGHT FORWARD EXHAUST PIPE.
THE NOW BENT-OVER SIGN DAMAGED THE NOSE WHEEL PANT (THE MAIN WHEELPANTS ARE FINE) BUT NOT THE NOSEGEAR ITSELF.
IT PASSED UNDER THE BELLY WITHOUT DAMAGING IT BUT CAUGHT THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE LEFT FLAP.
IT"S FINAL TOUCH WAS A SMALL DENT IN THE LEFT FUSELAGE, BEHIND THE FLAP AND A SMALL TEAR THERE.
YOU WILL NOTE THAT THE PROPELLOR IS NOT INSTALLED ON THIS AIRPLANE. WE HAVE DECIDED NOT TO INCLUDE IT IN THIS PROJECT, NOT BECUASE IT IS BENT, BUT BECAUSE IT ISN"T!
THE SIGN APPARENTLY NICKED THE PROP, BECUASE THERE ARE TWO SMALL SCRATCHED AREAS, ONE ON EACH BLADE.
1 SCRATCH IS IN THE PAINT ONLY AND DID NOT GO PAST THE PRIMER.
THE OTHER SLIGHTLY SCRATCHED THE METAL, BUT JUST BARELY. IT WILL EASILY CLEAN UP WITH NORMAL FILING, LIKE AN A&P IS AUTHORIZED TO DO. IT DOES NOT REQUIRE OVERHAUL OR TO BE SENT OUT FOR REPAIR, THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL TO BE REMOVED IS CLEARLY LESS THAN AN AVERAGE STONE NICK.
BUT I AM EXCLUDING IT BECUASE I DO NOT WANT A BUYER TO BE CONCERNED THAT THE PROP IS SUBSTANDARD IN ANY WAY AND DEVALUE IT AS A RESULT.
LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A PROP STIKE INSPECTION AS A RESULT OF THIS SLIGHT TOUCH (WHICH IS WHY I INCLUDED A PHOTO OF THE DAMAGE, EVEN THOUGH THE PROP IS NOT INCLUDED)
AS FOR THE PROP, WE WILL BE SELLING IT AS A GOOD USED PROP AFTER I CLEAN IT UP AND REPAINT IT.
SO WE HAVE AN AIRPLANE HERE THAT LOOKS ABOVE AVERAGE, INSIDE AND OUT!
WITH A 160 H.P. ENGINE THAT, AT 1,000 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL, STILL HAS 1,000 HOURS TO GO TILL TBO!!
SO YOU WILL NEED TO SOURCE A NOSEBOWL AND LOWER COWL, A NOSEPANT AND PROPELLOR AND A STARTER. THE SKIN TEAR AND THE FLAP CAN LEGALLY BE PATCHED.
AND THERE ARE NO OTHER REPAIRS THAT WE THINK THIS AIRPLANE REQUIRES.
THIS IS A FAR NICER AIRPLANE THAN THE 140 WE SOLD LAST WEEK, THIS IS A NEWER MODEL, AND THE REPAIRS AND PARTS REQUIRED ON THIS ONE ARE FAR EASIER THAN REPLACING A WHOLE WING, SO EVEN THOUGH IT IS SLIGHTLY MORE EXPENSIVE, I "M SURE YU CAN SEE WHY!
AND THIS ONE IS LOCATED IN CALIFORNIA (APPLE VALLEY TO BE EXACT), SO ALL YOU WEST COASTERS THAT THOUGHT THAT EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA WAS 2,300 MILES TOO FAR AWAY SHOULD LOVE THIS ONE!!
SOLD WITH AIRFRAME LOGBOOKS SINCE NEW IN 1969, ENGINE LOGS SINCE 1989 (LAST MAJOR OVERHAUL WAS 2001)
ANNUAL INSPECTION EXPIRED 1/1/2020, SO A FERRY PERMIT WILL BE REQUIRED TO FLY THIS AIRPLANE AFTER TEMPORARY REPAIRS.
