1971 PIPER PA28-140/160 HP,5375TT, 1792SMOH, 4 SEATS,NO A/F DAMAGE, NEEDS ENG WORK.
THE 0-320 E2A/D3G 160 HORSEPOWER ENGINE ON THIS CHEROKEE 140 HAS 1792 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL, AND OF COURSE THIS IS BELOW THE 2000 HOUR TBO, AND FAR BELOW THE NORMAL 2200-2400 HOURS THE AVERAGE 0-320 WILL RUN.
AT THE END OF THE LAST FLIGHT, THE INSTRUCTOR/OWNER OF THIS AIRPLANE BROUGHT IT INTO THE SHOP FOR AN ANNUAL INSPECTION. HE HAD NO ENGINE SQUAWKS, IT WAS RUNNING WELL, AND THE LAST OIL AND FILTER CHANGE, 50 HOURS AGO, SHOWED NO ISSUES.
UPON CUTTING OPEN THE FILTER THIS TIME THOUGH, THE MECHANICS FOUND FERROUS (IRON/STEEL) PARTICLES.
NOT WANTING TO SPEND THE MONEY ON A POSSIBLE OVERHAUL, AND WITH THE AIRPLANE FULLY DEPRECIATED AND NOT GAINING HIM ON TAXES ANYMORE, HE DECIDED TO SELL IT RATHER THAN REPAIR IT.
WHEN I SAW THE AIRPLANE THIS WEEK, AND HEARD THE STORY, IT OCCURRED TO ME THAT NO ONE HAD TRIED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE METAL, AND THIS WAS TOO MUCH AIRPLANE TO JUST SIMPLY "KILL" BY PARTING OUT.
THE 1971 CHEROKEE 140 HAS THE LATER STYLE DASH, WITH QUADRANT THROTTLE AND MIXTURE CONTROLS, MODERN 6 PACK GUAGE LAYOUT, SMOOTH EYEBROW WITH DUAL RADIO STACKS, AND MODERN SWITCHGEAR AND CIRCUIT PROTECTION
PILOTS SIDE TOEBRAKES, MODERN FRONT SEATS, AND THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE OPTIONAL 2 REAR SEATS, AND THE OPTIONAL FIBERGLASS HATSHELF, WHICH ALSO ADDS 14"" TO THE CABIN INTERIOR LENGTH.
GLASS AND PAINT LOOK GOOD OVERALL, AND THE CLOTH SEATS AND SIDE-PANELS ARE NOT TORN UP.

THE AIRPLANE IS WIRED FOR A 2 MORROW MOVING MAP GPS (ANTENNA INSTALLED) AND A KING NAV-COM, BUT THESE PANEL UNITS WERE REMOVED AND ARE NOT INCLUDED.
IN LOOKING AT THE LOGS, IT SHOWS THAT THE LAST MAJOR WAS IN 2002, BY PENN-YAN, A GREAT SHOP. IT ALSO SHOWS THAT 3 OF THE CYLINDERS WERE REPLACED IN THE LAST 200 HOURS, THE LAST ONE ONLY 150 HOURS AGO.
ALTHOUGH THE SOURCE OF THE "METAL" IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN, IT WAS NOT APPARENTLY FROM A VALVE, AS THE PILOT/OWNER NOTED NO ROUGH RUNNING. THIS STILL LEAVES MANY POSSIBILITIES, BUT IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO LOOK AT THE LAST THING TO CHANGE, IN THIS CASE A CYLINDER, BEFORE YOU LOOK FARTHER.
WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THIS ENGINE, BUT WE CAN SAY THAT THE ENGINE IS COMPLETE AND INTACT, WITH A NEW OIL FILTER INSTALLED AND SAFETIED, AND THE AIRPLANE ITSELF IS IN A FLYABLE CONDITION (NO OIL YET REPLACED IN THE ENGINE).
THE BATTERY IS EVEN UP!
THE ANNUAL EXPIRED 11/2015, SO A FERRY PERMIT WILL BE REQUIRED, BUT THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO GRANT ONE.
THE LAST AIRPLANE I SOLD WITH A SIMILAR SITUATION, A WARRIOR THAT I FLEW HOME THIS SUMMER AND THEN SOLD, IS STILL FLYING ON THE SAME ENGINE. THE CUSTOMER ON THAT ONE FERRIED THE AIRPLANE HOME AND THEN FOUND THE SOURCE OF THE METAL WITHOUT REQUIRING A MAJOR, AND IS VERY HAPPY. THIS COULD BE POSSIBLE ON THIS ONE AS WELL !!
EVEN IF YOU WOULD PREFER TO REPLACE THE ENGINE RATHER THAN REPAIR IT, GOOD USED ENGINES ARE READILY AVAILABLE, WITH A VARIETY OF TIMES, OUTRIGHT OR EXCHANGE, FROM US OR OTHERS, AND IF YOU FERRY IT HOME, THE EXCHANGE OF THE ENGINE CAN BE DONE AT YOUR LOCAL SHOP, UNDER YOUR CONTROL, AND ON YOUR SCHEDULE !!
