IF YOU NOTICED BY LOOKING THAT THIS AIRPLANE SEEMS TO HAVE A LOT OF SIMILARITIES TO THE CURRENT CROP OF 2 SEAT SIDE BY SIDES FROM VANS AIRCRAFT, THE RV-6A, 7A, 9A OR 12, YOU WOULD BE RIGHT !
THE AA-1 AIRCRAFT WAS DESIGNED AS A HOMEBUILT, AND THEN PUT INTO VOLUME PRODUCTION AS A CERTIFIED AIRPLANE
SO THE SIZE IS LIKE AN RV, THE SLIDING CANOPY, WHICH GIVES GREAT VISIBILITY AND CAN BE LOCKED PARTIALLY OPEN FOR THAT OPEN AIR FEEL IS LIKE SOME RV"S, BUT BETTER. (SOME RV"S USE A TIP UP, AND THERE IS NO OPEN AIR FEELING AT ALL) THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT SINCE THE AA-1 SERIES IS COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED, THERE ARE STRICT QUALITY CONTROLS IN PLACE DURING ASSEMBLY, WHICH IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE RV OR ANY HOMEBUILT(THERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD BUILDERS, SOME FAIR, AND SOME VERY BAD)
STRICT PRODUCTION CONTROLS ALSO ALLOWS EASY PARTS INTERCHANGES FROM ONE AIRCRAFT TO ANOTHER, IF NECESSARY, SO MAINTENANCE IS CHEAP AND EASY.
LIKE THE VANS RV SERIES, THE AA-1A IS A SLEEK AIRPLANE, WITHOUT EXPOSED RIVITS TO SLOW IT DOWN.
IN FACT, ON THE SAME HORSEPOWER, THE AA-1 SERIES IS ABOUT 20% FASTER THAN SIMILAR 2 SEATERS FROM PIPER AND CESSNA
THE "LOW COMPRESSION" 0-235 108 H.P. WAS DESIGNED FOR THE CHEAPER 80/87 OCTANE FUEL AVAILABLE IN THE 60"S AND 70"S, SO IT WORKS GREAT ON AUTO FUEL TODAY, MAKING THIS AIRPLANE SUPER ECONOMICAL TO OPERATE, OR OF COURSE IT WORKS FINE ON TODAYS 100 OCTANE AVIATION FUEL.
THIS AIRPLANE IS QUITE GOOD LOOKING, WITH MEDIUM METALLIC BLACK LOWER, WITH WHITE UPPER AND RED AND SILVER STRIPES BETWEEN, IN A PLEASING, EYE-CATCHING SCHEME
THE INTERIOR IS VERY SHARP, WITH TWO-TONE SEATS IN TAN AND BLACK.
(IM SORRY, BUT WE DIDN"T HAVE THE KEY THE DAY WE LOOKED AT THIS AIRPLANE AND SHOT THE PHOTOS, SO THE INTERIOR SHOTS ARE THROUGH THE WINDOW)
IF YOU ARE LOOKING THROUGH THE INCLUDED PHOTOS FOR ACCIDENT DAMAGE, YOU WON"T FIND ANY !!
THIS AIRPLANE WAS SITTING OUTSIDE WHEN IT SUSTAINED SOME HAIL PINGS.
NOT SERIOUS, AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS. MOST OF THE PICTURES DON"T SHOW ANY HAIL, OR AT LEAST ONLY VERY TINY, VERY SCATTERED DENTS.
THERE ARE TWO SPOTS WHERE THERE IS ANY LARGER DAMAGE AT ALL.
THE RIGHT WING, CLOSE IN BY THE FUSELAGE, HAS A DENT FROM A PREVIOUS INCIDENT THAT WAS FILLED IN WITH LIGHTWEIGHT FILLER (BONDO) TO REPAIR, AND A HAILSTONE HIT RIGHT THERE AND CRACKED THE FILLER. AN EASY AND LEGAL REPAIR.
THERE IS ALSO A DENT ON THE METAL SPINNER THAT I AM LED TO BELIEVE WAS CAUSED BY A LARGER HAILSTONE, BUT THE OTHER PINGS ARE SO LIGHT, I AM SKEPTICAL, BUT THERE IS A DENT WHICH COULD BE POUNDED OUT, PRE-EXISTING OR NOT.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT"S ABOUT IT !!
NO BROKEN GLASS OR FIBERGLASS
NO SERIOUS DENTS
OVERALL GOOD LOOK
AND LOOK AT THAT ENGINE COMPARTMENT !!
BOTH THE ENGINE AND THE WHOLE FIREWALL/COMPARTMENT LOOK CLEAN ENOUGH TO EAT OFF OF.
THE ENGINE APPEARS TO BE VERY LOW TIME.
BUT WE CAN"T BE SURE !!
DURING THE DISCUSSION ON HOW TO SETTLE THE CLAIM FOR THE LIGHT HAIL DAMAGE, THE OWNER OF THE AIRCRAFT SENT THE LOGBOOKS AND PAPERWORK TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOR INSPECTION.
BUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY NEVER GOT THEM.
A LOT OF FINGER POINTING LATER, THE INSURANCE COMPANY ELECTED TO PAY FOR THE WHOLE THING DUE TO THE DIMINISHED VALUE WITH NO LOGBOOKS.
SO THIS AIRPLANE HAS A REPORTED 2,700 TT AIRFRAME AND 900 REPORTED HOURS SINCE MAJOR, BUT WE DON"T KNOW THAT FOR SURE, SORRY
I WOULD SURE BET THAT THAT ENGINE, AND THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAVE BEEN DETAILED IN THE LAST 100 HOURS OR LESS, BUT EVEN IF WE COULD PROVE THAT, IT STILL DOESN"T PROVE WHAT WAS DONE. !
THE AIRPLANE IS SOLD WITH A VALID FAA BILL OF SALE, SO IT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL, BUT THE LOGBOOKS WILL HAVE TO BE STARTED FROM SCRATCH, OR FROM OTHER RECORDS YOU MAY DIG UP.
THE AIRPLANE APPEARS TO BE PERFECTLY FLYABLE, AND WAS FLOWN 100 NM SINCE THE HAIL EVENT, BUT A FERRY PERMIT SHOULD BE OBTAINED, AS THE DATE OF THE LAST ANNUAL CANNOT BE PROVEN.
ALL OF THIS HAPPENED IN LATE FALL, SO THE AIRPLANE HAS NOT BEEN SITTING LONG.
