WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW IS THAT THE RETRACTABLE LANDING GEAR HAS A UNIQUE FEATURE, WHICH HAS PLAYED A PART IN THIS AIRPLANES CURRENT CIRCUMSTANCE.
THE LANDING GEAR (ALL THREE) RETRACT STRAIGHT BACK, SO THE WHEELS ARE IN LINE WITH THE FUSELAGE, NOT FOLDED FLAT UNDER THE WING LIKE ALMOST EVERY OTHER SINGLE ENGINED AIRPLANE.
IN ADDITION, WHEN GEAR DOORS ARE NOT INSTALLED, ALL 3 GEAR ALLOW SOME OF THE WHEEL TO PROTRUDE FROM THE COWLING OR WINGS.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?
WELL, THIS AIRPLANE HAD A GEAR MISHAP.
IT APPEARS THAT THE PILOT OF THIS AIRPLANE RETRACTED THE LANDING GEAR INSTEAD OF THE FLAPS ON LANDING ROLL-OUT.
DONT ASK ME HOW I KNOW, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THE ORDER IN WHICH BELLANCA GEAR RETRACTS IN THIS TYPE OF SITUATION (MINE WAS ON TAKEOFF, BUT THE RESULTS WERE EXACTLY THE SAME)
THE NOSEGEAR MOVES FIRST, AND STARTS TO RETRACT BACK INTO THE NOSE WELL
THE LEFT MAIN STARTS MOVING NEXT, WHICH ALLOWS THE LEFT WINGTIP TO LIGHTLY TOUCH THE PAVEMENT BEFORE THE RIGHT MAIN STARTS TO RETRACT.
THE AIRPLANE SETTLES ONTO THE EXPOSED TIRES AND THE STILL EXTENDED FLAPS, AND SLOWLY STOPS ROLLING
IF YOU HAVE THE GEAR DOORS, LIKE THIS ONE DOES, THE LEFT MAIN CLAMSHELLS SUSTAIN SCRAPING DAMAGE, AND THE RIGHT GETS LESS, DEPENDING ON THE SPEED OF THE AIRPLANE AT THE TIME OF THE RETRACTION.
THE LEFT TIRE HAS A FLAT SPOT IN THE TREAD, BUT IS HOLDING AIR OK.
THE PLANE MUST HAVE BEEN GOING SLOW, AS THE RIGHT CLAMSHELLS HAVE ONLY A SMALL SUPERFICIAL SCRAPE ON EACH CLAMSHELL.
THAT IS HOW IT ALWAYS HAPPENS, AND ITS HOW IT HAPPENED HERE.

SLIGHT LIGHT SCRAPING TO BELLY ANTENNAS ONLY !!
EXCEPT FOR THE SMALL AMOUNT OF FIBERGLASS COVERING SCRAPE ON THE LEFT WING TIP, THE WINGS ARENT TOUCHED
THE LANDING GEAR ITSELF, ISNT TOUCHED !! NO SCRAPING OR BENDING, AND AS THE ACTUATOR IS HYDRAULIC, THERE IS NO MANDATORY INSPECTION OR REPLACEMENT OF THE GEARBOX, LIKE A BONANZA WOULD REQUIRE
THE LOWER EDGE OF THE STEP IS SCRAPED.
OF COURSE THE OTHER ISSUE IS THE PROP.
ALL 3 BLADES ARE BENT BACK EQUALLY, AS THE NOSE GEAR SLOWLY FOLDS BACK, BUT HERE TOO, THE LYCOMING ENGINE IS AN ASSET. EVEN THOUGH MOST SUPER VIKING CONTINENTALS DON"T CRACK THE CRANKSHAFT DURING A GEAR UP, IT IS A HIGHER POSSIBILITY, BECAUSE THE CONTINENTAL HAS A HARDENED CRANKSHAFT FLANGE, THAT TENDS TO CRACK, WHILE THE LYCOMING HAS A SOFTER FLANGE, WHICH USUALLY DOES NOT CRACK.
THE FLAPS WILL NEED REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT, BUT THE ATTACH POINTS ON THE WINGS LOOK GOOD
THE RIGHT AILERON HAS A DIME SIZE SPOT ON IT OUTBOARD BOTTOM EDGE THAT WILL NEED TOUCH-UP
BOTH LOWER EXHAUST PIPES HAVE A SCRAPE ON THE THIER BOTTOM EDGE, AND WILL REQUIRE ATTENTION (MAYBE JUST TRIMMING, THEY ARE NOT CRUSHED)
THE REST OF THE EXHAUST AND ALL OF THE ENGINE AND ACCESSORIES LOOK PHYSICALLY GREAT
INSIDE, THE SEATS HAVE BEEN UPGRADED FRON THE ORIGINAL, PRIMARY COLOR SADDLE BLANKET INTERIOR THAT ALL BELLANCAS CAME WITH, TO A CREAM COLORED, ULTRA-LEATHER COVERED DREAM !!
