IT PUT GIUSEPPE ON THE COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE!HIS LIGHT AIRCRAFT WERE ALWAYS KNOWN AS FAST FOR THE HORSEPOWER, WITH THE PREWAR AIRPLANES BEING SMALL RADIAL ENGINE POWERED.HIS POSTWAR DESIGN, THE 14-13, WAS POWERED BY A MODERN 150 H.P. 6 CYLINDER FRANKLIN, A BULLET-PROOF ENGINE STILL IN USE ON MANY ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC AIRPLANES, LIKE THIS ONE HERE!THE 14-13 OF 1946 AND THE IMPROVED 14-13-2, THE TYPE FOR SALE HERE, WERE 4 PLACE, LOW WING CABIN MONOPLANES WITH RETRACTABLE MAIN LANDING GEAR.A DISTINTIVE FEATURE ARE THE OVAL ENDPLATES ON THE TIPS OF THE HORIZONTALS, WHICH WE NOW KNOW NOT ONLY INCREASED THE STABILITY BUT ALSO ACTED LIKE A MODERN WINGLET!THE “TRIPLE-TAIL” LOOK AND THE WOOD WINGS OF THE 14-13 SERIES GAVE THE CRUISAIR SENIOR THE NICKNAME “CARDBOARD CONSTALLATION”.UNLIKE THE MANY PUDDLE JUMPERS PRODUCED BY VARIOUS COMPANIES AFTER THE WAR, THE 14-13 WAS A FAST, COMFORTABLE CROSS COUNTRY AIRPLANE, WITH LOGBOOK ENTRIES I FOUND WITH 5 ½ HOUR AND 6 HOUR FLIGHTS AROUND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, NEVADA AND UTAH IN THE EARLY 1950’S! 150 MPH CRUISE SPEEDS DUE TO THE SLIPPERY, SMOOTH WING AND FUSELAGE, GIUSEPPE’S AERODYNAMIC MAGIC AND THE TRUSTY FRANKLIN!CESSNA 195 SPEEDS ON HALF THE FUEL!!THE 14-13-2 VERSION LIKE THIS ONE HAS LONGER HORIZONTALS, SMALLER ENDPLATES AND AN OUTSIDE BAGGAGE DOOR FOR CONVIENIENCE!I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL 14-13 BELLANCAS PAINTED, LIKE THIS ONE, IN ITALIAN RACING RED!MAYBE IT IS JUST A CLASSIC LOOK, OR MAYBE IT IS TO HONOR GIUSEPPE, BUT I LIKE IT.THIS AIRPLANE HAS BEEN RECOVERED IN MODERN STITS POLYFIBER.THE ENGINE HAS ONLY 396 HOURS SINCE A MAJOR OVERHAUL, AND COMPRESSIONS AT THE LAST ANNUAL IN 2020 WERE ALL 70 AND ABOVE!THIS NEAT AIRPLANE SUFFERED DAMAGE WHEN IT WAS LEAD IN A FORMATION FLIGHT AND LANDED LONG TO ACCOMMODATE THE PLANES BESIDE HIM. THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO STOP ON THE REMAINING RUNWAY AND RAN LONG, INTO SOME BUSHES AND A SMALL TREE.AS A RESULT, THERE ARE SMALL NICKS AND SCRATCHES ALONG THE LEADING EDGES OF BOTH WINGS. ALL VERY LIGHT AND INNOCENT DAMAGE.THE TREE IMPACTED THE LEADING EDGE OF THE WOOD WING, FORWARD OF THE MAIN SPAR, INBOARD OF THE LANDING GEAR, WHICH WAS NOT DAMAGED, AND OUTBOARD OF THE FUSELAGE, WHICH ALSO WASN’T DAMAGED.THE PLYWOOD OF THE WING LEADING EDGE AND IT.S FABRIC COVERING WILL REQUIRE PATCHING IF YOUR INTENT WAS TO FERRY THE AIRPLANE, AND REPAIR FOR FINAL AIRWORTHINESS STATUS.THE FIXED PITCH PROP SUFFERED SOME PAINT NICKS, BUT NO BENDING AT ALL AND NO DAMAGE THAT WONT FILE OUT AS YOU WOULD AT ANNUAL.WITH ITS HEAVY CRANKSHAFT AND PROP FLANGE, THE FRANKLIN ENGINE HAS NO A.D. REQUIREMENTS FOR TEARDOWN, AND YOU WOULDN’T EVEN ON A LYCOMING OR CONTINENTAL ANYWAY SINCE YOU CAN RESTORE THE PROP TO AIRWORTHINESS WITH A PAINT JOB!THE ONLY OTHER DAMAGE NOTED WAS TO THE trailing edge OF BOTH FLAPS!IT APPEARS THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN PRE-EXISTING DAMAGE FROM TOUCHING THE HANGER SUPPORT POLES AND THE PILOT WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE THIS WAY!THERE IS NO LEFT WING DAMAGE OTHER THAN THE LEADING EDGE NICKS AND SCUFFS, NO GEAR DAMAGE, NO TAIL DAMAGE, NO WINDSHIELD OR DOOR DAMAGE, BUT THE PILOT’S SIDE WINDOW (FLAT PLEXI) IS CRACKED.TE INTERIOR IS “CLASSIC” RED SOFT CLOTH, ALSO FOUND IN SOME OF NEW ORLEANS FINEST HOUSES OF ILL REPUTE IN THE DAY!THE DASH HAS BEEN MODERNIZED GREATLY, WITH MODERN GYRO INSTRUMENTS IN A SIX-PACK CONFIGURATION, CENTER STACK FOR AVIONICS, CIRCUIT BREAKERS AND MODERN SWITCHGEAR FOR THE ELECTRICAL.
