2019 ZODIAK 601XL “B”, 53 TT AIRFRAME, CUTE, GREAT PROJECT, CHEAP!THE 601XL IS THE LIGHT SPORT CAPABLE VERSION OF THE 600 SERIES OF TWO SEAT, LOW WING KIT PLANES FROM THE ZENITH AIRCRAFT COMPANY OF MEXICO, MISSOURI.THE ORIGINAL 600 WAS DESIGNED AND FIRST FLOWN IN 1984, AND THE COMPANY HAS REFINED THE AIRPLANE AND IMPROVED IT MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS.YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT THE 601 HAD A SERIES OF INCIDENTS OF SUSPECTED IN FLIGHT BREAKUPS WHICH GROUNDED THE FLEET FOR A TIME.THE FACTORY SUSPECTED THAT A FLUTTER MIGHT HAVE CAUSED A HARMONICS ISSUE, SO THEY DESIGNED A BEEF-UP KIT THAT THEY SUGGESTED BE INSTALLED ON ALL 601XL’S IN PROCESS OR COMPLETED.THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE “B” MODS INSTALLED AT THE BUILD, NOT RETROFITTED AFTER. No “B” modded 601 has had a problem with flutter.IN GENERAL, THE 601 XL IS AN HONEST, STRAIGHTFORWARD PERFORMER, WITH GOOD FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS AND DOCILE HANDLING.THE BUBBLE CANOPY GIVES EXCELLENT ALL-AROUND VISABILITY. THE 601XL HAS DUAL CONTROL STICKS AND DUAL RUDDER PEDALS, WITH A CENTER MOUNT FOR THE THROTTLE AND MIXTURE CONTROLS, SO IT CAN BE FLOWN EASILY FROM EITHER SEAT.THE BAGGAGE AREA BEHIND THE SEATS IS LARGE AND HAS EASY ACCESS.THE 601XL IS DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE FLIGHT TRAINING ENVIRONMENT, BUT IS USED MOSTLY AS A PRIVATE AIRPLANE.A VARIETY OF ENGINES CAN BE FITTED, FROM THE 100 H.P. LIQUID COOLED ROTAX, TO THE CONTINENTAL 0-200 (100 H.P.) TO THE JABIRU 120 H.P. THIS AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN FITTED WITH THE CONTINENTAL 0-200, NOW REMOVED AND NOT INCLUDED HERE, BUT THE MOUNT AND CONTROLS ARE INCLUDED FOR THAT INSTALLATION.PARTS ARE READILY AVAILABLE FROM ZENITH, SO A MOUNT CAN EASILY BE PURCHASED FOR ANOTHER ENGINE TYPE IF YOU WOULD PREFER.AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE INCLUDED PHOTOS, THIS AIRCRAFT IS DAMAGED BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY, AND IT IS A VERY SHARP LOOKING AIRPLANE!FULLY FINISHED, WITH A VERY NICE TWO-TONE GREY INTERIOR WITH ZENITH COLOR EMBROIDERY AND A FLAT DASH LAYOUT, READY FOR YOUR CHOICE OF AVIONICS!THE INTEGRATED SWITCHPANEL/CIRCUIT PROTECTION PANEL IS READY TO SERVE ALL OF YOUR ONBOARD ELECTRICAL NEEDS.THIS AIRPLANE HAD A POOR LANDING, WHICH BENT THE FORK AND BROKE THE NOSEGEAR TUBE. LUCKILY, THE NOSEGEAR DID NOT HIT ANYTHING AS IT LEFT THE AIRPLANE, SO THERE IS NO BELLY DAMAGE OR DAMAGE TO THE WINGS OR TAIL FROM IMPACT.THE TUBE MOUNTS TO THE FIREWALL WITH A BUNGY CORD FOR SPRINGING, AND THE VERY BOTTOM OF THE TUBE REINFORCEMENT BRACKETS APPEAR TO BE THE ONLY DAMAGE TO THE ATTACH AREA.THE RIGHT WING OUTER PANEL AND WINGTIP ARE DENTED AND THE RIGHT TIP STROBE BROKEN DUE TO IMPACT, BUT THE LEADING EDGES (WHICH HOLD THE FUEL TANK IN A 601XL) ARE NOT DAMAGED. THIS AIRCRAFT HAS EXTRA FUEL IN THE FORM OF 2 TANKS ON EACH WING!THE RIGHT WING DOES NOT SHOW ANY DAMAGE TO THE SPAR ATTACHMENT POINTS AND THE FUSELAGE DOES NOT SHOW ANY VISIBLE BENDING EITHER.THE RIGHT AILERON HAS SOME BENDING TO THE SKIN ON THE OUTBOARD SPANTHE LEFT WING HAS A VERY SLIGHT DEFORMATION TO THE ALUMINUM TIP, PRESUMABLY FROM HANDLING AFTER THE INCIDENT, AND PRESUMABLY WILL JUST PUSH BACK INTO PLACE.THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE LEFT AILERON AND NO ATTACH POINT DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING EITHER.THE MAIN GEAR SHOWS NO DAMAGE AND NONE TO THE GEAR ATTACH POINTS OR CARRY-THROUGH.THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL/RUDDER ARE LIKEWISE UNDAMAGED.THERE IS A SMALL AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE FIBERGLASS NOSEBOWL, REPAIRABLE WITH STANDARD METHODS.THIS IS A PERFECT PROJECT FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS A LITTLE TASTE OF HOMEBUILDING, BUT DOESN’T HAVE THE TIME OR PATIENCE TO START FROM A BOX OF LOOSE PARTS AND BUILD THE WHOLE BLOODY AIRPLANE FROM SCRATCH!THIS IS A VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD REPAIR, WITH PARTS AND SUPPORT AVAILABLE FROM THE FACTORY AND THE AIRPLANE HAS ALREADY BEEN BUILT AND FLOWN AND THE AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE GRANTED (AND INCLUDED HERE)VERY NICE LOOKING BLUE AND SILVER PAINT WILL ONLY REQUIRE A RESPRAY OF THE RIGHT WING AND TOUCHUP ON THE COWLING.AND THE AIRPLANE IS OTHERWISE ALMOST BRAND NEW, HAVING ON 53 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW!LOGBOOK FOR THE AIRFRAME, INCLUDING THE SIGNOFFS ARE INCLUDED, AS ARE THE FAA BILL OF SALE.AND THE FAA AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATEAND THE KEYS!LOCATED AT OUR MAIN LOCATION AT THE CRYSTAL AIRPORT (KMIC), JUST NORTH OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.WE WILL KEEP IT HANGERED FOR UP TO 30 DAYS AT NO COST, THEN $7 PER DAY IF YOU NEED MORE TIME.LOADING WILL BE SUPER EASY ON ANY FLAT TRAILER AS IT ROLLS PERFECTLY ON THE MAIN GEAR.
