Item specifics
Condition: Used
This STOL, tail-dragger Light Sport plane was purchased by me from the second owner (who took much better care of it than I did) in 2011, flown briefly. The close-coupled wheelbase and pilot error has resulted in two ground loops. The first was repaired. The second has left the plane grounded for two years.
This airplane is as pretty in real life as she looks in the pictures. Other than the ground handling, this airplane flew beautifully, once upon a time. Was built bog-standard with Rotax 582 2-stroke engine (grey head) which ran well, once upon a time. Has a working transponder, which is unusual in this model and is necessary for operating near the SFRA.
The builders log and manuals, other misc documents are at my place in Indiana and will be mailed to you when you take delivery.
The wings fold on this aircraft, which means that it is uniquely transportable. It will fit on a standard U-Haul car trailer.
Here is the current status of the aircraft per the A&P who is currently holding it and who will receive a percentage of the auction price as a handling fee. Questions submitted re: status will be answered by him, and you will receive the aircraft from him when you pick it up at Ridgley airport in Ridgley, MD. He might be willing to transport it somewhere nearby for the appropriate fee.
The registration is expired, as of 9/2014.The wingtip is still damaged from the ground-loop. One thing that was revealed in the investigation for prepping to repair was that all of the wooden ribs, or at least those that have an aileron hanger in their trailing edge, are rotted and need to be repaired or replaced. This is also true for the ribs that form the cabin top. I had difficulty installing the new skylight a few years ago, and this is apparently why. The rot is probably the result of living outside all this time. Corrective action will -probably- require the wings to be recovered.
The right radiator is off. I removed it and (hopefully) brazed the mounting bracket back on. Repeated attempts by others to repair with JB weld were unsuccessful. It needs to be re-installed, filled and tested. The gear bungee cords need to be replaced. The narrow gear track and short wheel base are both known problems with this model Avid and they have "all" (except, apparently, this one) been upgraded. I learned the hard way, that the gear geometry does not provide any indication when the bungees are weak, and those weak bungees, coupled with the unmodified gear footprint, were the major cause in my ground loop (and probably yours, too, Dave). There are other normal maintenance items, like weather-checked tires and probably a bunch of other small-ish stuff that I have forgotten.
