Make: Bell Model Year: 1942
This is a Bell P-39Q-20 fighter, a pacific combat veteran flown by Captain William "Willie" Server of the 68th Fighter Squadron "Lightning lancers" made famous on Guadalcanal / 347th Fighter Group / 13th Air Force in 1943/44, the aircraft has many ground attack sorties listed on the side panel for attacks against Japanese shipping, troops and tanks around Guadalcanal and surrounding islands, the aircraft also has some aerial combat victories which i am trying to research but unfortunately the Japanese flags denoting these victories were cut out of the aircraft"s side wall before recovery by an unknown souvenir hunter.
The pilot and plane both survived the war and while the plane languished for many years in the jungles of the south pacific the pilot went on to fight in Korea and Vietnam until retiring as a Colonel.
The combat history of the aircraft is well documented and preserved on the cockpit skin which has been removed from the air frame and kept elsewhere but will be provided on sale.
This is a very low cost entry level warbird project, advertised for far less than the cost of recovery as i have too many other projects and would like to see somebody restore this, additional parts both new made and original may be purchased by negotiation. This project is for the serious restorer and not for novice tyre kickers who cannot see what it is, obviously as with 90% of warbirds flying today an airworthy restoration would need to incorporate many newly manufactured sheet metal parts which i and others can supply.

Despite being derided by some know it all historians the P-39 is not only faster than a P-51 at low level with 500 less horse power but it is also far more maneuverable when correctly loaded. The P-39 only suffered above 13,000ft due to a lack of a supercharger, and as most warbird flying these days is well under that it is inconsequential.
The P-39 was designed by Bell Aircraft to be manufactured by unskilled workers with great speed and did not require the use of complex jigs for many assemblies, it is a modular design consisting of an extremely strong lower keel joined in two halves to which a cabin and rear fuselage are bolted to and a 4140 steel box center section to which the wing panels are bolted on.
